Special in depth interview with Rain
Rain the trust or just interview
Reporter: Jin Hyang Hee (Daily Economy/ Star Today)
* ( ) The words in italic in the brackets are insinuated, but not written, meanings or additional info added by ‘blu’ to clarify the sentences.
Rain, who I met for the interview, was very cautious. If I threw a question at him, he never answered it without thinking. After taking his time to thoroughly think, he gave ‘the best answer’ and he added long explanations to those answers.
Rain was honest, full of confidence and relaxed.
When he talked about his goals or dreams, his eyes were twinkling, though he did not show interest in questions regarding dating and women. He tilled his head looking puzzled at the modifier ‘the world star’ which he currently hears tiresomely.
It was not just him being humble. He said, “If you really become a world star, you don’t need to attach the words ‘world star.’ Just one word ‘Rain’ will be enough, then.”
Until now, Rain, who has run towards his goal breathlessly without straying away once, without a break, is preparing to stick a proud flag at the apex after climbing up to the top of the mountain after passing all the ridges after ridges.
His face was covered with the relaxed smile but his facial expression was resolute. When asked, “Where on earth is the end for you?” Rain answered with his unique smile with his eyes, “I've got to swallow the whole world.” And said, “ I want to be the next Michael Jackson."

“Mysticism only worked in the 90s. I think the honesty is the best policy. (Because of that,) I think people like me a lot more these days. Wherever I go, people tell me a lot about the show programs I was on. Particularly, the elders. I’m rather grateful to those comments.”
Q: If we turn on the TV, you’re everywhere…on the entertainment programs and radios. If you’re a world star, you don’t necessarily need to be on the TV…
R: I don’t have to… But I think the fans have a right to know what I did and how hard worked in the US last 2-3 years via talk shows or radio. They would be like ‘What is he doing now?... if I just release an album alone, go back out to abroad and do concerts, I feel it would be too selfish (of me). But I am not on too many shows. 6 talk shows and maybe about 20 radio shows? I used to go and do that many when I had an album out before. Lately, people are talking about ‘Mysticism’ and saying that, 'If Rain appears on the (many) shows, there won’t be mysticism (about him).' But that only worked in the 90s. The important thing is… Many people told me that they ‘feel the huge distance’ from me and I wanted to explain myself even via like the talk shows.
Q: Unlike press interviews, you’ve become the daily topic of the conversations due to the frank talks during these entertainment programs…
R: I think the honesty is the best policy. I think people like me a lot more these days (because of that). Wherever I go, people tell me a lot about the show programs I was on. Particularly, the elders. I’m rather grateful to those comments.
Q: What is the reason that you are more honest in the broadcasting programs than the (press) interviews?
R: I am always honest. (The reporters from the press) Didn’t ask many questions. Besides, I didn’t have much time to meet with many reporters.
Q: Your album has gotten really good responses. I think there must be special meaning (to that) since it is your first album that you’ve produced.
R: I’m very satisfied. I am happy that many people love the album. I was excited rather than scared (for the album release). (Showing me the paper) Our staff show me the results of the album response like this everyday. (Whenever I look at that) I think ‘Thank you.’ ‘It’s still doing well today. I appreciate it.’…
Q: When I talked to the manger, he said you go to the office even when the schedule finishes early. I also heard you practice everyday without skipping one… isn’t it too tough for you physically? If I see you on the stage, I think there must be huge energy consumption (required for the performance)…
R: It’s tough when I have the time difference due to the movie or business deals in the US in addition to the tight schedule I already have. (According to the manager, Rain never leaves food on the plate and has a strong appetite to the extent that he would complain of hunger right after finishing a meal.)
Q: There have been a lot of responses saying that you have a different feel about you now. Relaxed and full of confidence…
R: In the past, I was a bit hard (=rigid) trying to be the best. Even on the stage, in many cases, I used to be very hard from beginning to the end. This time, there are steps like when you write a composition (introduction – the story – the development & the peak of the story – conclusion). I regulate the tempo by tightening and loosening. I’m no longer a newcomer. Because I have been doing this for a long time, I thought that I wanted to show more of myself and show that I’m honest.
Q: I am curious what you would be doing if you were totally alone, outside of music related business.
R: (Even before the question ended) Exercise. I really exercise a lot. When I am home I do push-ups and I watch movies. I don’t do many things.
Q: You mentioned that you got so sick of eating chicken breasts and salads and you would not exercise ever again…
R: I said I wouldn’t…but I had to change my body into the dance body. If I had the body with total muscles (with 0% fat) before, now I have to exercise to make more flexible body with a bit of fat in it. But I don’t exercise like I used to be as if my life was one the line.
Q: While releasing this album, what was one thing that you thought ‘I want to appeal to people with at least this’?
R: (It’s) ‘Be more honest.’ The honest and genuine appearance. So I wrote the lyrics. I included all my life stories.
Q: You said the lyrics are filled with your stories but they are rather heart breaking love stories. Do you, perhaps, actually like a painful love?
R: Who would possibly like that? I had a painful love. I had it but now it is only the memory.
Q: What kind of guy would you be if you fell in love?
R: (Smiling cutely) An adorable boyfriend with a lot of charms.
Q: I think the modifier ‘world star’ must be quite a burden to you…
R: I’ve never once thought that I became a world star. If I really become a world star, there won't be the words ‘world star’ in front of Rain. It will be just enough with Rain alone, then. The public opinions and the press gave the nickname for my lone running (towards success=towards becoming a world star). ‘Why is he living so fiercely?’ ‘Why is he working so hard?’ (people are wondering)… I am trying to achieve that (=success, =become a world star). Next year, I could become a world star when the movie and the album get released. Or maybe I could fail but I will accept the result and I will again run towards success. Right now, the words ‘world star’ are not important.
Q: 10, 20, 30 years later… I think you would have already drawn the blue prints for yourself for those years… I don’t think you are an ordinary person…
R: I want to start a band at 40. I think it’ll be fun if it is a dancing band. At some point, if an album comes out in the US and (becomes successful), I don’t know, I might be doing something a lot more developed and extensive.

“My main job is a singer but being an actor is what I working on as well. I am not risking my whole life on the ‘Ninja Assassin.’ I think it is a step towards an upgrade. If it doesn’t succeed, there will be next step. It’s the same with the songs. If I release an album and if it doesn’t do well, I could try even a bigger project. It’s 50:50. It’s always been that way.”
Q: If the movie, which will be release next year, does well (at the box office), what do you think will happen next?
R: Wouldn’t it be a mythological story? There has been an American-born Asian actor who became the box office #1 but there’s never been a case with a Korean-born actor becoming the box office #1. If that really happens, it would be amazing. If that happens, well… what should I do? It’s too exciting. Really!
Q: Do you think the ‘Ninja Assassin’ could be the box office #1?
R: I think there is a chance. The best case would be the number 1 (at the box office) and the worst case would be… I think at least I could make them think that a cool actor has born (through this movie).
Q: It seems that you’re really having fun and feeling rewarded about acting. If you divide the weight between the music and the acting at this point…
R: It’s the same. My main job is a singer but being an actor is what I am working on as well.
Q: Did you want to act even from your debut?
R: Yes. Maybe people don’t know but I wanted to act even from my debut.
Q: What would be the pinnacles of your acting and music?
R: Both have gone up a lot higher that I thought they would be. As a singer, to become #1 in the music programs and as an actor, receiving the excellence award in acting... these used to be my wishes but I've achieved both.
Q: You must have gotten this question many times, but what was your turning point in life?
R: When I learned what hanger meant. And When I started acting.
Q: When you say acting, you mean ‘Sangdoo, let’s go to school’?
R: Yes.
Q: You look like you might get married extraordinarily as well. Hollywood stars sometimes get married to even a waitress or a dancer. In Korea, they still prefer ladies from good families, so to speak. Especially, the trends of the Korean stars lately…
R: One day, I think I’ll get married suddenly. (Laughing) I probably won’t say ‘I will announce it in 10 days.’ The condition of the spouse? I don’t care about that. I’ve got abilities (laughing).
Q: Who would be your role model?
R: My role model on the stage is Michael Jackson. My role model in life is my father.
Q: Michael Jackson? If you really want to meet him, I think, it would be possible for you, though… What do you want to say if you meet him?
R: Originally, I’ve had a chance to meet with him. But something came up and I couldn’t see him. If I see him, I want to tell him that ‘I’m your fan.’
Q: What is your weak point of which we don’t know?
R: I’ve got a lot of weak points… It’s hard to pick one out. I’m a bit cautious and scrupulously concerned with little things. (When I said he doesn’t look like that) Sometimes I am like that, other times…just very easy going.
- - - - - - - - - -
“Before the debut, I’ve seen a fortune teller. He said I’ve got huge luck between ages of 24 and 60. Then, he told me to be careful at 40 because I might have a health problem. I’m told I’ll live at least until 84. After I became famous, I saw another fortuneteller. The result was the exactly the same. Those two wouldn’t know each other… so it’s very interesting to hear the same words from two different people.”
Q: What if you were just a regular salary man… if you didn’t become an entertainer? Have you ever thought about something like that?... ‘How would my life be, then?’
R: Wow, I probably worked hard at that as well. No matter what, I would have worked hard. Even if I weren’t the best in that field (whatever the field might be), at least I would have heard from people I worked hard at it.
Q: There are people wondering…’What more is there left for Rain to show?’ Maybe you have already poured too much into it?
R: I’ve gotten those questions since my 30s (laughing) (*Joking. Meaning, too early to be asked about those questions). I’ve thought about the 2nd album when I was working on the 1st album. I’ve thought about the 3rd album when I was working on the 2nd album. Although I am physically working here but my mind is already thinking about what I should do in the US. So I don’t have such worries (as mentioned in your question). Because I’ve got so much to do in the future. Someday, there could be someone who will dance better than me and have a better (stage) manner than me. Then, I just have to move one step further than that fellow. If that guy does acting, then I will do something extra. (I’ll always find something new and something extra. Like) The ‘cane dance’… I’ve practiced that dance like crazy for 3 month.
Q: Where is the end?
R: I’ve got to swallow the whole world.
Q: After you swallow the whole world, then?...
R: What I really have to fight is the mainstream America. Here (in Korea), there is no opponent to fight. It’s like having fun (here). Wherever I go, people go ‘Wow~’ and they treat me really well. I am thankful and very happy about that. Now, the problem is that, next year, I have to go to the US and fight with the mainstream and compete with the pop artists and Hollywood actors there. If I get lucky and become successful, then I am taking the world. In my 1st album, I wondered if I could become the number 1…and I did. When I went to China and Japan, I wondered if I could become famous… and it happened. I achieved them all. Who knows? I might become ‘the next Michael Jackson’…
Q: Have seen a fortuneteller?
R: Are they fortunetellers or do I have to call them philosophers (*Sometimes, some of the fortunetellers in Korea are called and/or calling themselves philosophers)? Before the debut, I’ve seen a fortuneteller. He said I’ve got huge luck between ages of 24 and 60. Then, he told me to be careful at 40 because I might have a health problem. I’m told I’ll live at least until 84. After I became famous, I went with my father and saw another fortuneteller. The result was the exactly the same. Those two wouldn’t know each other… so it’s very interesting to hear the same words from two different people.
Q: There are a lot of people who try very hard. The efforts alone don’t make it successful. The efforts should be there but there should be some luck involved as well. You want to deny that?
R: I am a bit dualistic in the sense that (laughing)… I’m a fatalist and, at the same time, I believe in making your own fate. There is a book called ‘Secret,’ and, in that book, it says if you believe you can do something, it comes true. When you think ‘I have a fate that has no choice but do well,’ everything will turn out well.
Q: Always, always, always… Those who are not doing well, they can’t hear those words very well…
R: When things don’t go well, you could get discouraged but if you think the next step is going to go well, it could change the direction. For example, let’s say, once, twice, three times… you failed at business. But I think you still have one big chance to recover. For anyone (there is that one big chance). There is a saying ‘Though you dig a well, dig one well and you’ll find water. It is true.
Q: I thought there must be something special to someone so successful… When I hear you talk, I realize you have a very strong and healthy mind. I think that people around you would probably get this energy from you…
R: There’s something I say it like a slogan these days. It’s ’The 20 somethings (=people in their 20s), let’s get the victory.’ In the US or other places, the competition among the 20 somethings (=people in their 20s) is fierce. (It’s like) If you live, I die and if I live, you die. In Korea, there are no natural resources. Then, what should we do? The answer is human resources. The human power is amazing. We have to push it though with the man power. We can’t get too comfortable. (For an example, if I get too comfortable and if I don’t try hard) Other people could do far better than me in 10 years. People who used to do very well 10 years ago are behind me now. I got too excited saying this when was on the radio… what I am trying to say is that… even if things are not going well for you now, don’t get too discouraged and too depressed about it.
Q: I heard there are a lot of people heading to Han River because of the huge drops in the stock prices.
R: (Didn’t answer the question and looked frustrated & heartbroken)
Q: What do you think is the importance anew at the position of a top star pausing for a breath?
R: The more famous I become, I promise to myself to ‘be honest.’ The stars receive love from the public. So I don’t think they should hide the truth.
Q: Are there ‘ak-pl’ (=vicious comments on the web, Konglish*, see below) for the world star? I don’t think there is any ‘anti’ group for you.
R: There are lots. But that’s O.K. The ak-pl used to be ‘You, can you sing live while dancing?’ ‘Can you ever become the number 1?’ ‘You think you can do well if you go to Japan?’ ‘You think you can do well if you go to the US?’…
I told myself ‘I’ll just have to show them I can do it’ and I did. I made it all happen.
Q: It might sound a bit stupid but when is the happiest time for you? I am asking just in case the answer could be something different than I expected.
R: It’s the exactly same as you expected. When I act and sing, that’s when I am happiest. And when I am on the stage… it’s impossible to describe the ecstasy I feel.
Q: The last thing you want to do in the world (=The thing you hate to do)?
R: (Hesitated for a long time) When I do something I don’t want to?... There are too many things that I don’t want to do. Too many. What should it be? It’s too wide-ranged. Well, it’ll become too long (to talk about it).
Q: The last question. If you find a love, would you reveal her to the public?
R: Honestly, no. For her (I wouldn’t do it). I’ll be fine with it but for her, no.
* Konglish: It’s words made from the combination of English words and Korean words. (For an example, ‘ak-pl’ comes from Korean word ‘ak’ meaning evil, badness etc. and the ‘pl’ comes from English word ‘reply,’ thus, meaning the vicious comments left on the blogs or the web pages.)

Rain will peform in Blue dragon award
2008.11.16 DBSK, WONDER GIRLS, RAIN TO ADD MORE GLITTER TO 29TH BLUE DRAGON FILM AWARDS
The night of the Blue Dragon Film Awards promises to be a glittering affair! The 29th Blue Dragon Film Awards (Live via KBS2TV) will be aired on 20th November, 7.25PM (KST) and is held at the KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul. It promises to be full of attractions with plenty of stars expected.
Besides all the stars from the Korean movie industry in attendance, popular singers like DBSK, Wonder Girls and Rain will also lend their presence.
DBSK currently flying to and fro between Japan and Korea for promotions will be the opening act on the night of the 29th Blue Dragon Film Awards. They will link up with 50 KBS dancers and perform their current hit single Mirotic.
The Wonder Girls will then appear with their entrance expected to be the foundation for the nervousness and tension that comes with the awards presentation. They have also prepared a secret weapon for the actors. Besides performing their current hit single Nobody, they will also be performing the song Ulleungdo Twist from Soo Ae’s movie Someone Dear Is Far Away. Since being confirmed as performers, the Wonder Girls have been rehearsing hard and making sure everything is in place for an exciting performance.
Top star Rain will also give an exciting performance which will push the climax of the awards ceremony to it’s highest. Besides presenting his usual extra grand stage, Rain’s performance will last for around 7 minutes and is placed just before the Best Actor/Best Actress/Best Movie are announced.

Showing his best dance skill through "Don't Stop" and "Rainism", he let the audience sigh.
Mnet concernd who had prepapred for this event said, "The eligible list of MKMF Prize had closed until October 14th, because Rain's album had been saled from the 15th, it was not nominated for MKMF Prize. In spite of the fact that he was not nominated, we cheer Rain to the echo, who made the superlative stage."
Rain plans to get down to act with "Only You", the following song of "Rainism", from the 17th.
