Rain Settles Lawsuit Over Missed Concert

Rain, the South Korean pop star and actor, has settled a suit brought by a Hawaiian concert promotion company that won an $8 million judgment against him and his managers, Agence France-Presse reported. In March a court found in favor of the promoter, Click Entertainment, which had sued Rain and his representatives at JYP Entertainment after the singer (whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon) canceled a concert scheduled for June 15, 2007, at Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium, a few days before the show. Lawyers for the promoter argued that Rain never intended to perform, and that his crew members never shipped their equipment or applied for visas. Citing a report from the Korean Yonhap news agency, Agence France-Presse said that the two sides reached an agreement on June 10 to settle the case and avoid an appeal. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

South Korean pop singer Rain and a U.S.-based entertainment firm have agreed to settle a lawsuit over the singer's canceled concert in Honolulu two years ago, Yonhap News Agency reported Wednesday.
In March, a Honolulu federal jury had found Rain and his agency guilty of breaching a contract with Click Entertainment Inc. for the 2007 concert and ordered them to pay the Hawaiian promoter some $8 million in punitive charges and compensation.
After three months of legal dispute, Rain and Click Entertainment settled the case in less than two hours at a Hawaiian court on June 10, Yonhap said. Details of the agreement on compensation and other conditions were not disclosed due to court orders.
Rain's concert was canceled a few days before the scheduled date of June 15 in 2007 at Aloha Stadium, the first stop on his U.S. tour. The tickets were sold for a maximum $300 each.
While Click Entertainment claimed it lost more than $1.5 million from the cancellation and suffered damages to its business reputation, Rain accused his Hawaiian promoter of shoddy preparation, claiming the concert stage was not properly set up.
The lawsuit had dealt a heavy blow to future activities in the United States for Rain, who gained some fame in Hollywood since appearing on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report."
The 26-year-old singer and actor, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, is one of the most popular male celebrities in Korea and is also widely known across Asia. He will star in the upcoming Hollywood movie "Ninja Assassin" and plans an Asian concert tour later this year.

Korean pop star and actor Rain, also known as Jung Ji-hoon, has settled a lawsuit over a cancelled concert in Honolulu in 2007.
The Hawaiian court ruled in March that Rain and his agency must pay $8 million to Click Entertainment, the U.S.-based firm that organized and promoted the concert.
The case was settled in just two hours on June 10 with Rain's two lawyers, a lawyer from his then-agency JYP, planitiff Lee Seung-soo of Click Entertainment and his lawyer attending a hearing, according to AP and other reports.
The settlement details were not made public due to a court order.
Experts estimate that both were tired of the long legal dispute and the Hawaiian court tried to arbitrate, resulting in the agreement. The settlement amount is expected to be less than the original $8 million.
Rain’s Hawaii concert, supposed to be the first stop on his U.S. tour, was originally scheduled for June 15, 2007 at Aloha Stadium and tickets were sold for a maximum of $300. But the concert was cancelled a few days before the scheduled date.
Click Entertainment claimed $1.5 million in losses from the cancellation and reputation damage, while the 26-year-old singer accused the promoter of not preparing the concert properly.
Rain can now focus on his concert tour in Asia and promotion of the movie ``Ninja Assassin,'' produced by the Wachowski brothers.

해외 언론들이 한국 가수 비에 대해 뜨거운 관심을 나타내고 있다. 지난 2008년 할리우드 영화 '스피드 레이서'를 들고 프로모션을 진행할 때보다 몇십 배 아니 몇백 배는 더 큰 스포트라이트가 쏟아지는 중이다. 별다른 활동없이 미국에서 공백기를 갖고 있는 그가 갑작스럽게 해외 화제의 중심에 선 것.
비가 집중조명 받는 이유는 다름 아닌 할리우드 여배우 메간 폭스 덕분이다. 폭스는 현재 영화 '트랜스포머:패자의 역습' 월드 프로모션을 진행하고 있다. 그런 그녀가 가는 곳마다 인터뷰를 통해 "다음 데이트 상대로 한국의 가수 비를 생각하고 있다"고 언급했고, 이에 각종 외신은 "도대체 비가 누구냐"며 호기심을 보이기 시작했다.
사실 비가 미국 문을 두드린지 벌써 3년. 2007년 개최했던 '월드투어'를 시작으로 2008년 워쇼스키 감독의 영화 '스피드 레이서'에서 주조연급으로 출연하면서 이름을 알리기 시작했다. 또 오는 12월에는 첫 할리우드 주연작 '닌자 어쌔신' 개봉을 앞두고 있다.
그럼에도 불구 비는 미국이나 유럽 내에서는 거의 무명이나 다름없다. 타임지가 선정한 파워피플에 올랐지만 실제 비에 대한 대중적 관심도는 거의 바닥이나 다름없었다. 혹 안다고해도 중국인으로 오해를 사곤 했다. 3년 동안의 성과에 비해 존재감은 미미한 셈이었다.
하지만 메간 폭스의 한 마디가 이 모든 것을 바꿔놨다. 비에 대한 '무관심'을 '급관심'으로 돌려 놓았다. 폭스는 지난 11일 호주 라디오쇼 '카일 앤 재키 오(Kyle and Jackie O)'와의 인터뷰에서 데이트 하고 싶은 상대를 묻는 질문에 "한국의 저스트 팀버레이크로 불리는 비와 하고 싶다. 현재 나는 비에게 빠져 있으며 관계를 만들고 싶다"고 처음으로 비에 관해 언급했다.
3일 뒤 독일 베를린에서 열린 영화 '트랜스포머' 공식 기자회견 때도 마찬가지였다. 폭스는 이날 "약혼자와 헤어진 뒤 아직 솔로냐"는 질문에 "그렇다고 볼 수 있다"고 답한 뒤 "데이트를 한다면 한국의 가수 비와 하고 싶다"고 또 한번 비를 지목했다. 이 발언은 영국 일간지 '더 선'과 미국 월간지 '베니티 페어' 등 유력 언론 매체에 실리면서 더욱 탄력을 받았다.
폭스는 할리우드에서 최고의 주가를 올리고 있는 여자 배우다. 영화 '트랜스포머' 성공에 힘입어 전세계적인 톱스타 반열에 올라섰다. 그런 그녀가 한국의 가수 비를 이상형으로 언급했으니 그 파급력은 상상을 초월했다. 3년간 비가 미국에서 차근차근 쌓아온 커리어보다 폭스의 한 마디가 주는 효과가 더 컸다.
일단 제일 먼저 비에 대한 궁금증을 나타낸 것은 해외 네티즌들이다. 이전엔 비에 대한 기사가 나와도 '누구냐'며 무시했던 그들이 먼저 '비에 대해 알고 싶다'는 의사를 리플을 통해 드러내고 있다. 이에 각국 언론들은 그의 영화 활동과 공연 무산, 하와이 소송 건 등 활동 이력과 근황 등을 기사에 덧붙이며 비 알리기에 나섰다.
또한 각종 해외 연예 블로그에서는 몸매 사진이나 한국에서의 활동 모습, 폭스와의 사진 합성 등 비의 여러 모습이 올라오면서 그에 대한 인지도가 상승세를 타고 있다. 정작 비는 아무 것도 하지 않았는데 폭스가 이상형으로 지목했다는 사실 하나만으로 새로운 마케팅 효과를 거두고 있는 것이다.
물론 비를 향한 폭스의 러브콜이 성난 한국팬의 마음을 달래긴 위한 계산된 발언인지, 아님 애정을 담은 진심어린 말인지 확인할 길이 없다. 하지만 하나는 분명하다. 한국의 스타 비는 폭스의 마음을 뺏은 매력남이 됐고, 세계에 자신의 이름을 어필했다는 점이다. 실제 폭스와 비가 연인이 되는가는 중요치 않다. 다만 비에게는 진짜 월드스타로 도약할 수 있는 계기가 됐다는 점에서 긍정적인 요인임에 틀림없다.

디시인사이드는 지난 9일부터 16일까지 `가장 사업가적 자질이 뛰어나다고 생각하는 연예인은?`이라는 주제로 설문조사를 실시한 결과 김태욱과 비가 각각 1, 2위를 차지했다고 밝혔다.
`개꿈`을 부른 가수 출신이며 채시라의 남편으로도 유명한 김태욱은 총 2,309표 중 629표(27.2%)의 지지를 얻으며 1위에 선정됐다. 김태욱은 현재 웨딩업체 `아이웨딩넥트웍스`의 대표로 바쁜 나날을 보내고 있다.
가수 비는 566표(24.5%)의 득표율로 2위를 차지했다. 월드스타가 된 비는 지난해 자신이 직접 디자이너와 모델로 참여한 의류브랜드 `식스 투 파이브(SIX TO FIVE)`를 론칭하며 의류사업을 시작했다.
3위에는 329표(14.2%)로 가수 출신 SM엔터테인먼트의 이사 이수만이 뽑혔으며, 이 외에도 JYP엔터테인먼트의 박진영, YG엔터테인먼트의 양현석, BOF엔터테인먼트의 배용준 등이 그 뒤를 이었다.

J.Tune entertainment, Rain's agent, announced this fact through Rain's official website last 16th. According to J.Tune side, Rain has established his own channel in alliance with SK Broad Band, a IPTV brand.
