South Korean pop star Rain appeared at a federal court in Hawaii Monday to testify on his abruptly cancelled concert there in 2007, which cost a Honolulu-based concert agency $1.5 million.

His appearance in the courtroom was made on the last day of the hearing, which began March 10, according to AP and other international media.

Rain ㅡ whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon ㅡ testified he had every intention of performing in Hawaii and other U.S. states but a series of abrupt concert cancellations were out of his control.

``I was not the person that canceled the concerts,'' Rain was quoted as saying. ``I would love to perform in North America. The cancellation was regrettable.''

He was poised, polite and seemed at ease as he answered questions for about 90 minutes in Korean through a court interpreter, it reported.

The 27-year-old singer and his producers are being sued over the abrupt cancellation of a June 2007 concert in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Hawaii-based Click Entertainment Inc. alleges in the suit that Rain and his producers defrauded it of more than $500,000 paid in licensing fees. It's also seeking additional damages for the cost of staging the event, including the rental of Aloha Stadium, stage production, travel, hotel accommodations, merchandising and advertising.

The company also claims it has sustained losses of valuable business opportunities, earnings and income in amounts to be proven during the trial. In addition, the company has suffered serious and lasting harm to its business goodwill and professional reputation, the lawsuit said.

But the allegation was refuted by an official at JYP, a South Korean entertainment agency backing the singer and producers, during a separate session.

Byun Sang-bong, JYP's vice president and chief financial officer, blamed the cancellation and other problems on promotion company Star M. Byun said a legal copyright challenge in Nevada over the name ``Rain'' was another issue the company faced at the time.

Even though Rain's trip to Hawaii this time was motivated by an undesirable situation, it allowed Korean fans and his staff to be confident that the Korean entertainer has a substantial fan base, needed to succeed in the United States, the world's largest entertainment market.

Local media reported Rain was greeted by hundreds of cheering fans upon arrival at Honolulu International Airport and bombarded with flowers, gift baskets, and fans who just wanted to touch him.

STORY SUMMARY
Although Korean pop sensation Rain came to Honolulu yesterday as a defendant in a federal lawsuit, local fans consider him one of their own.

Gerrie Nakamura, one of several dozen fans greeting Rain at the airport, said that such devotion is part of a "hallyu wave" sweeping the land, a tsunami of popularity of South Korean culture.

"Korean drama fans want to support the movement," said Nakamura. "The music and drama coming out of Korea are the yin and yang, each one dependent on the other. You have to admire Rain's ambition, his aspiration for greatness."

POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Mar 16, 2009

On the first sunny day after weeks of cloudy weather, Rain came to Honolulu. The irony was not lost on local fans of the Korean pop superstar; it's just that they hate it when Rain's name is taken lightly.

"Urrgh. Just don't say 'Rain falls' in a headline," complained Alishaa Asakura, 70. "That's the worst."

You didn't misread that age reference. The demographic of the 75 or so fans gathered at Honolulu Airport yesterday to greet the K-pop idol tended to skew older and female.

Rain's fan clubs are named after clouds. Although Honolulu Cloud President Geri Mehrtens, a bowling coach at Moanalua High School, "kind of liked" Rain -- real name Jeong Ji-hoon -- in the Korean telenovella "Sang Doo! Let's Go to School," she wasn't bitten by the Rain bug until she saw him perform in Las Vegas.

"His talent is just unbelievable, incredible, unreal," breathed the middle-age Mehrtens. "And his thing is overcoming challenges. See all the gray hair out here? Mothers love him. Sure, he has charisma, but mainly his life story is one of overcoming challenge, from being dirt poor and starving, to a mother who didn't want him to become a professional. He has a really good heart."

As for overcoming challenges, Rain is in Honolulu as a defendant in civil litigation, and scattered among the cheerful true believers at the airport were lawyers in dark suits, including Rain's mainland counsel and manager, Joy Kim.

Rain scuttled a 2007 concert tour just days before a scheduled stop in Honolulu, leaving promoters to pick up the pieces. Hawaii-based Click Entertainment Inc. alleges that Rain and his producers defrauded it of more than $500,000 in licensing fees and is seeking additional damages to cover costs of staging the event.

Asakura -- who collects DVDs of Rain, even though they can't be played on American equipment -- said the lawsuit is a bump in the road and that Rain's huge natural talent and gigantic empathy will win him new fans.

"From the first time I saw 'Sang Doo,' I knew he'd be big, the biggest ever, and with a big heart" -- spreading her arms wide to illustrate -- "like Obama is big. He speaks truth. He needs to show parents that there is integrity in the entertainment business. When I saw Rain perform in Las Vegas, I cried because he is so symbolic of what we need in these times."

Fan Gerrie Nakamura said that such devotion is part of a "hallyu wave" of South Korean culture sweeping the land.

"Korean drama fans want to support the movement," said Nakamura. "The music and drama coming out of Korea are the yin and yang, each one dependent on the other. You have to admire Rain's ambition, his aspiration for greatness."

A shriek erupts and grows louder, frantic. A pale young man in a Beatle cut sweeps through the International Arrivals exit and waves his hands at the welcomers, who immediately close in like a vise. Other passengers, pulling luggage, frantically try to duck out of the way. The swirling mob descends toward the street, and then Rain leaps in a limousine driven by former TV reporter and private investigator Matt Levi. Total time elapsed: about 30 seconds.

But the memory will last a lifetime. Asakura, her hands still clasped in wonder, steadied herself against a pillar. "I gave a special gift for him through his manager," she said, "a chi bracelet to give him strength.

"We're from the rock 'n' roll generation, the baby boomers who loved Elvis," she said. "We've been waiting for it to happen to all humanity, breaking the chains of sexuality, freedom and love. When I graduated from high school in 1957, I knew that these kids born today would be star-seeds who don't have our hang-ups, who would be free to pursue creativity. Rain -- he should be given golden keys to the city."

The trial resumes today in U.S. District Court.

Six Most Ripped Asian Guys- Rain is on the list!!

Rain

Hard to imagine that Rain was once told that he would never be a star. This guy is perhaps one of Korea’s most revered singers much thanks to his physique. His role in Full House brought international fame to Rain and it doesn’t seem like his stardom will be waning anytime soon. He recently released an album entitled Rainism.
Rain is one of the bigger guys on this list. His physique is very impressive - broad shoulders, bulging biceps, and a strong overall chest make him one of the few Asian guys who can wear low cut shirts.

Rain, whose real name is Jeong Ji-hoon, arrived at court about 10 a.m.

Unlike yesterday, when about 100 fans greeted him at Honolulu airport, only a handful of fans were waiting. Inside
the courtroom, however, the gallery was filled with about four dozen spectators, mostly women.

Accompanied by at least two men who appeared to be bodyguards, Rain walked briskly into court, saying nothing.

As he entered the court, a process server tried to hand him papers from Andrew Kim, a Los Angeles-based promoter who also is attempting to sue Rain over a canceled concert. Rain refused to accept the papers and let them fall to the floor.
The Honolulu lawsuit was filed by Seung Su Lee, president of Honolulu-based Click Entertainment Inc. Lee is
suing Rain and his former agency, Seoul-based JYP Entertainment Co., for breach of contract and fraud for Rain’s cancellation of a 2007 concert at Aloha Stadium without explanation. Rain kept a $500,000 appearance fee.
Kim alleges the same thing happened to him in Los Angeles.

Lee testified last week that the last-minute cancellation cost him $1.5 million and damaged his business reputation. He also said Rain and his traveling entourage of 90 people never intended to perform in Hawaii, saying the crew
never applied for proper visas.

03.16.09 Rain Says He Doesn’t Know Why Honolulu
Concert Was Canceled

South Korean pop star Rain took the stand in his civil trial in
federal court today and said he did not know why his 2007 concert at Aloha Stadium was canceled.

Rain, whose real name is Jeong Ji-hoon, testified that he was looking forward to performing in Hawaii but his
management team made the decision to cancel the show.

When pressed by plaintiff’s attorney Eric Seitz, Rain testified that at one point he was told that the concert had to
be canceled because security was deficient at Aloha Stadium.

“My part is on the stage performance,” Rain said through an interpreter. “Everything else is arranged by the
management team.”

Rain said he would like to perform in Hawaii “as soon as possible,” but only if he was certain that security was
adequate.

The courtroom was packed with about four dozen Rain fans, almost all of them women.
Earlier in the day, Rain walked briskly into the courthouse accompanied by at least two men who appeared to be
bodyguards.

As he entered the court, a process server tried to hand him papers from Andrew Kim, a Los Angeles-based promoter who also is attempting to sue Rain over a canceled concert. Rain refused to accept the papers and let them fall

'Rain' Testifies Over Canceled Concert

Local promoter Click Entertainment is suing Rain, whose real name is Jung Jihoon, and his former management company for canceling an Aloha Stadium concert slated for June 2007.
Rain tossed papers served to him on the ground as he entered federal court. The papers said a Los Angeles promoter is suing Rain for the same canceled North American tour in 2007.
A local promoter said he is owed about $3 million and accuses Rain and his management company of fraud.
Some fans were at the trial to show they have no hard feelings and want him back.
"That's exactly what we hope. We want him to come back and perform in Hawaii," fan Elaine Ikeda said.
On the stand, Rain said he got $5 million for the tour. He said he had no idea why the U.S. concerts were cancelled. He has experts handling that.
Rain made fans happy by saying he would love to perform in Hawaii.
"I thought his tone and demeanor were really humble, and I thought it really, especially through the interpreter, conveyed the sense that a lot of people were involved with the concerts and he was trying explain his side of the story," one fan said.
"When he was basically saying he would love to come back here and he really appreciates his fans, and definitely when he was leaving the courtroom he gave us that little wave definitely to let us know that he loves us, too," another fan said.

03.16.09 "I was not the person that canceled the concerts,"

South Korean pop star testifies in court
HONOLULU (AP) - South Korean pop star and actor Rain testified he
had every intention of performing in Hawaii and other U.S. states, but
a series of abrupt concert cancellations were out of his control.
"I was not the person that canceled the concerts," he said through an interpreter. "I would love to perform in North America."

Rain made his first appearance in U.S. District Court in a room packed
with giddy female fans in a civil trial stemming from the cancellation
of his scheduled June 15, 2007, concert in Honolulu.

Hawaii-based Click Entertainment Inc. alleges Rain and his managers
breached a contract and defrauded it of $500,000 in licensing fees,
plus nearly $1 million in other expenses to stage the event.

Sporting a black suit and long bangs that nearly covered his eyes, Rain
was poised, polite and seemed at ease as he answered questions for 90
minutes in Korean through a court interpreter. He introduced himself in
English after being sworn in.

"I am Jung Ji-hoon and I perform as Rain. Aloha," he told the court with a smile.
Before entering the courthouse, Rain flashed a "shaka" hang-loose
sign to fans and was handed another lawsuit over his canceled concert
in Los Angeles. He let the document fall to the ground.

The 26-year-old Rain said he really wanted to perform at Aloha Stadium
but couldn't make it for reasons he had no hand in. "It was
regrettable," he said.

Rain said he didn't know why his Hawaii concert was canceled, until
much later when he was told by his handlers that the stage was not
adequate and there were security concerns.

Rain said he wants to perform in the United States, especially in Hawaii as soon as possible, if security can be assured.

When asked what his role was in canceling his five concerts across
North America, Rain said he doesn't make planning decisions. That's
left up to his management team at the Seoul-based agency JYP
Entertainment, he said.
Rain also said he wasn't aware how much Click lost or how much he
earned in 2007. "Several million?" asked Click attorney Eric Seitz.

"I am just concentrating on my work," Rain said. "I don't manage my money."

An official at JYP testified earlier in the day that Rain had earned
about $1.2 million a month from his music, TV and film work.

Byun Sang-bong, JYP's vice president and chief financial officer,
blamed the cancellation and other problems on the promotions company
Star M. He said a legal copyright challenge in Nevada over the name
"Rain" was another issue the company faced at the time.

But Seitz emphasized to the seven-member jury that a motion for a
preliminary injunction against Rain was never granted, allowing the
performer to freely perform in the United States.

Seitz has accused Rain and JYP of never intending to perform in Hawaii.

Rain was asked whether he was aware that Click had paid for his
first-class airfare, a presidential suite at a luxury hotel, limousine
and a private party at a nightclub, all of which were required by his
management. He responded the perks were requested by his manager, not
him.
Seitz pressed Rain about why none of his band's equipment was
shipped to Hawaii and why his large group of dancers and band members
had not applied for work visas. About 90 people were on Rain's travel
roster, including his father.

Rain said planning is entirely done by his management team, and that his job is solely to prepare for performances.

"I was practicing with dancers. I was packing my bags," Rain said.-AP

03.16.09 Rain Testifies at Trial; Still Wants to PerformRain Testifies at Trial; Still Wants to Perform

The Korean singer and actor known as Rain is now starring in his own real-life legal drama. The star

took the stand on Monday to testify in his federal trial over a canceled Hawaii concert as eager fans
flooded the courtroom.

Rain arrived at courthouse wearing a dark suit and sunglasses. He said “Aloha” and flashed a shaka

but didn’t answer questions. At the entrance, he was served with legal papers for a lawsuit in California. The entertainer let the document fall to the ground. A promoter in Los Angeles is suing for fraud and
breach of contract over a 2007 concert at the Staples Center that was canceled just hours before the
show. It was part of the same world tour that was supposed to include a performance at Aloha Stadium.

“The issue is whether Rain and his company, who was his agent as his time, are responsible for these losses or whether other parties who were involved are responsible,” explained Eric Seitz, the attorney for the plaintiff, Hawaii-based Click Entertainment.

Seitz said his client paid more than $1 million in licensing fees and other costs for a concert that never

happened. Dozens of die-hard fans showed up to watch the drama unfold in court.
“It’s kind of difficult to take your eyes off of him but just trying to pay attention to what he was saying was

important,” said fan Audra Tumulak of Mililani.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji Hoon, told the jury through an interpreter he was sorry about what

happened and said, “I really wanted to perform in Hawaii because I was told there were many fans in
Hawaii.”

Rain said he did not make the decision to cancel. He was told it had to be called off because the stage

custom built for his fireworks and waterfall was not secure.
“I believed his reasons and he says he wants to come back to Hawaii and hold a concert here so I’m

hoping they say he has to,” said fan Elaine Ikeda of Kaimuki.

Rain told the jury he still hopes to perform in Hawaii but the company that is suing him said it’s too late.

“That offer has never been made, and unfortunately now we’ve incurred enormous expenses so

although he expressed a willingness and desire to come back and perform it’s a little bit late for that to happen,” said Seitz.

I hope someone makes the correction:
it was the Sheriff who dropped the documents..
NOT RAIN!!!! GEEZ...BE CAREFUL ABOUT
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE...!!!
The sheriff just walked across from right to left...
in front of Rain..
a "stranger" shoving in in front of him and dropped
the papers..why would Rain stop and pick it up????
it all happened within seconds and Rain and body
guards also just looked and kept on minding their
own business...following Rain.
"wake up and look closely at the video before
agreeing to say Rain dropped the papers."

South Korean pop star Rain has arrived at federal court in Honolulu to testify in a civil lawsuit filed against him over cancellation of his 2007 Hawaii concert, The Associated Press reported.

Before entering the courthouse Monday, Rain said “Aloha,” flashed a “shaka” sign to a handful of fans and was served with papers on canceled concerts in other states, including one in Los Angeles, AP said. He let the documents fall to the ground.

Honolulu-based Click Entertainment is suing Rain and his former agency for breach of contract and fraud for canceling the concert at Aloha Stadium without explanation.

Plaintiffs say Rain kept a $500,000 appearance fee. The Korean star was scheduled to testify Monday afternoon.
The courtroom was packed with fans, all female, ranging from grandmothers to teenagers.

If any members can log into korea times ...
This is what I observed from the video shoot.
"Rain did not drop the papers from the
Los Angeles court server...
RAIN HAD HIS HANDS IN HIS POCKET
AND THE SHERIFF DROPPED IT
it happened in a second..
THAT IS A LOT OF DIFFERENCE
OF PERSPECTIVE. "
