A former CNN journalist who worked in South Korea during the 1990s is working on a new documentary about Japanese invasion into the Korean Peninsula 500 years ago.
Keiko Bang, 44, has embarked on The Imjinwaeran (the Japanese invasion on Korea in the Imjin Year, 1592) documentary. “That war was the second largest in Asia after the WWII. It literally changed the historical direction in the region,” JoongAng Ilbo cited her as saying on Friday.
Her goal of delineating the sensitive history on a film is as complex as her own background. She is a Japanese American who is married to a Korean man. “Ethnically, I am Japanese. But I grew up in the United States. And I am married to a Korean husband. So, I am confident that I can do a fair job of objectively showing the history.”
She inherited her interest in Korea from her father, who had particularly loved songs by the Korean singer, Patti Kim. “On weekends, my father played her songs. And I often woke up, listening to the Korean music.” Influenced by her father, Bang first visited Korea in 1984 and spent a summer at the Ewha Womans University in Seoul and gradually shaped her destiny as a “Korea expert.”
Bang’s idea of the Imjinwaeran is something that she has been brainstorming for the last 15 years, she said. “This will be the first documentary on the war, made by a foreigner.”
She previously produced Discovery Channel’s popular “Hip Korea ― Seoul vibes,” a documentary about Jung Ji-hoon (aka, the pop star Rain) and modern Korean pop culture.
In the new war documentary, she is particularly interested in admiral Lee Sun-shin (or Yi Sun-sin), a Korean naval commander, well known for his ingenious use of the “turtle ship.”
“Admiral Lee is an attractive figure. But he is not very well known outside Korea. I want to introduce him to the world through the documentary,” she said.
Her promising project has drawn keen interest from around the world and broadcasters in France, the U.S., Germany as well as South Korea already made pre-contracts with her for the rights to air the documentary.
Her focus throughout the documentary is to recreate the history as truthful as possible. “The key here is to gain credibility,” she said. To make it possible, she hopes to film part of the documentary in North Korea for the sections where the battle was carried out in today’s North Korean territory. “It wont’ be easy.”
Having known Korea for many years and living with a Korean husband, she disagrees with the common perception by foreigners to describe the nation as the “Land of Morning Calm.”
“I disagree. Korea is a dynamic place where interesting and even extreme situations occur.”

This isn't the first time they recognized a Korean artist, as will.i.am gave Kero One a personalized video message. It seems like a lot of American artists are interested in Korean acts these days. Hopefully, this time period will be looked back upon as the start of big things for Asian Artists in America. Thanks to Sarah West and wana for the tip.

비-메간폭스, 서로 이상형 지목 ‘통했다’
영화 '트랜스포머'의 섹시스타 메간폭스가 "비와 데이트를 하고 싶다"며 호감을 표현해 눈길을 끌었다. 방한 당시 국내 매체와 인터뷰에서도 "비가 마음에 든다"고 밝혔던 메간폭스는 지난 11일 호주의 한 라디오 방송과의 인터뷰에서도 "한국의 저스틴 팀버레이크 비와 데이트 하고 싶다"고 말했다.
지난해 비 역시 한 방송에 출연해 이상형을 묻는 질문에 "'트랜스포머'의 메간폭스가 섹시해서 좋아한다"고 답한 적이 있어 스타들의 마음이 통한 셈이 됐다.
11일 호주의 유명 라디오 프로그램인 '카일 앤 재키 오 쇼(The Kyle and Jackie O Show)'에서 전화 인터뷰를 한 메간 폭스는 '지금 유명 인사와 데이트를 한다면 누구와 하겠냐'는 진행자의 질문에 "한국의 저스틴 팀버레이크인 비와 하고 싶다. 정말 그렇게 됐으면 좋겠다"라며 웃으며 말했다. 메간 폭스의 솔직한 발언에 진행자들도 "그도 분명 원할 것"이라고 웃으며 호응하기도 했다.
앞서 지난 9일 1박 2일 동안 한국을 찾았던 메간폭스는 국내 매체와의 인터뷰에서 '비에 관심이 있다고 들었다'는 질문에 대해 "인터넷 서핑을 하다 비가 셔츠를 입지 않고 찍은 사진을 봤는데 정말 인상적이었다. 기회가 된다면 그를 꼭 만나고 싶고 그가 나를 위해 노래를 불러 줬으면 좋겠다"며 비에 대한 높은 관심을 보였다.
국내에서의 '비 발언' 때만 해도 방한 스타들이 흔히 하는 립 서비스라고 생각해 별 관심을 기울이지 않았던 팬들도 "호주에 가서까지 그렇게 얘기했다는 건 의외"라며 비상한 관심을 보여주고 있다.
이런 메간폭스의 높은 관심에 대해 비측은 "호감을 갖고 있다니 당연히 고맙게 생각한다. 다른 통로를 통해 메간폭스의 뜻을 전해 들은 바는 없다"고 말했다.
영화 '트랜스포머:패자의 역습'을 홍보 중인 메간폭스는 10일 한국에서 프랑스로 출국했다.

Rewind time back to 2002. Korea was co-hosting the FIFA World Cup with Japan and finished fourth in the competition... wait... go back another few months. It's May and a little record called "Bad Guy" was the debut track for (to quote one newspaper) 'rising comet Bi'.
Mr Jeong Ji Hoon had been under the wing of one of the pillars of the Korean Music industry JYP for two years. This was after being rejected by several companies because of his looks and needs-a-bit-of-practice-to-make-use-of-his-talent status. Not to mention the apparent car-wreck that was his earlier efforts in a group called "Fan Club".
But no, under the watchful eye of JYP, Rain swept through Korea winning every major newcomer award in his first year. He followed this up with forays into acting, building up experience with "Sangdoo, Let's Go to School" and other (failed) projects. It was after his next two albums "How to Avoid the Sun" and "It’s Raining" became hits that he began building a reputation abroad, especially when he appeared in "Full House" with natural beauty Song Hye Kyo in 2004.
It came as a shock for all of us when in 2007, Rain broke off from JYP and began his own rival company Rainy Entertainment (later renamed J. Tune Entertainment). Maybe we should have seen it coming; he always insisted that he be credited as Jeong Ji Hoon in his acting projects as opposed to the name that made him famous with JYPE… perhaps he had always harboured hopes on becoming independent from the beginning.
Having added most Asian countries to his conquests, he's now got his sheelnoon (thread eyes) set on the West. I’d probably classify him as part of the third generation of stars attempting to win over America ("Pre-90s" followed by "GOD, HOT, SES" then "Se7en, BoA, Rain"). But without the backing of any of the three huge names in K-Pop it will be difficult for him to make it the US but by God, he's giving it his best shot.
So he's been voted in the Time 100 and hit number one on the internet polls, he's been on The Colbert Report and he's performed in Vegas. Yet he's still unknown in almost all Caucasian american households, he's yet to make an impact musically and probably most embarassingly lost his own name as Mr Preciptation.
So what about the future? I'll be honest, I'm a genuine fan of the man for what he has achieved despite all the troubles in his early life but he stands only a small chance of success. K-Pop is still niche and it will take more than just one man (or woman) to shift opinion... even if Perez Hilton bigs up 2NE1 and Super Junior.
Despite all that, Ji Hoon hyung-nim has nothing to lose in the US. Whatever he does now he will establish his name with at least the industry insiders. Rain will have links here and there with producers and artists which will be important if he decides to pursue success for J. Tune Entertainment more than as "The Rain".
In fact, with his production and acting ambitions, he could be a significant force in Korea for helping acts cross the Pacific. He might not become the “World Star” that Korea has crowned him but he, like others before him, will set the precedent and lay the foundations for K-Pop to truly become part of mainstream Western entertainment. I wish him all the very best, especially with his first major role in Ninja Assassin in November.
