알프스를 마주한 소감은.
거대한 느낌, 산맥들을 쭉 둘러보니 그림 같다. 한 바퀴 둘러보니 마을이 워낙 깨끗해서 숨쉴 맛 난다고나 할까. 딱 영화 같다는 표현이 어울리는 곳인데, 내가 여기 있어도 되나 하는 생각이 들기도 한다. 이런 자연으로 여행을 온 건 처음이라……
시차 적응이 어려운 건 아닌가.
워낙 해외 출장이 잦다 보니 몸이 자연스럽게 그 장소의 시간을 받아들인다. 내겐 그리 어렵지 않은데 때론 굉장히 피곤할 때도 있다. 이번 여행에선 유독 일찍 잠에서 깼다. 그럴 때면 로비에 나와 웹 서핑도 하고 인터넷으로 전화도 하면서 시간을 보냈다. 왜, 다이얼을 돌리는 아날로그 전화기의 수화기 기억나지 않나. 그것과 같은 모양을 한 USB 전화기를 항상 휴대하고 다닌다.
<닌자 어쌔씬>을 끝내고 쉬는데 조금은 익숙해지지 않았나.
8개월의 촬영 기간 동안 닭 가슴살과 야채로만 살았기 때문에 촬영이 끝난 후엔 먹고 싶은 음식을 찾아 다니느라 오히려 분주했다. 그런 다음엔 매니지먼트에 소속돼 있는 신인 트레이닝과 디자이너로 참여한 ‘6 to 5’의 패션쇼 준비로 정신이 없었고. 이렇다 할 대외적인 활동을 하지 않았을 뿐 여유를 즐길 시간은 그리 많지 않았던 것 같다.
데뷔 이전부터 먹는데 한 맺힌 이야기는 거듭되는 것 같다.음식이라는 게 몇 십 년 동안 먹어오던 버릇이 있어서 한 순간에 식성을 바꾸려니 굉장히 어려운 것 같다. 하물며 8개월간 닭 가슴살과 야채만으로 연명해야 했으니 얼마나 배가 고팠겠나. 해외에 나올 때면 편한 사람들과 맛있는 음식들 찾아 다니는 재미로 살았는데 그러질 못했으니까. 사실 그 전엔 먹는 것 자체에 만족했는데 <사이보그지만 괜찮아>를 찍던 당시 박찬욱 감독님과 같이 맛 투어를 자주 다닌 이후부터는 미식가처럼 해외에서도 맛 탐험에 나서는 걸 즐긴다. 그런데 이번 여행은 좀 이상하다. 벌써 한식이 그리워지는 건 왜일까. 계속 바나나만 먹고 있으니 원숭이가 된 기분이 들기도 한다.
잠시라도 짬이 날 땐 주로 뭘 하나.
남들처럼 음악을 듣거나 영화를 즐겨 보는 편이다. 음악 듣는 취향이 좀 바뀌어서 클래식이나 재즈도 자주 듣는다. 편안하게 쉬고 싶을 때나 과도한 스트레스를 해소하는데 도움이 되니까. 예전엔 카메라를 모으는 취미도 있었는데 일적으로 촬영을 많이 하게 되면서 이 사치스러운 취미에 흥미를 잃었다. 전문가가 아닌 이상 그렇게 좋은 카메라를 가지고 있을 필요가 없다는 생각도 들고. 아무래도 가장 행복한 시간이라면 친한 사람들과 수다를 떠는 때라 할 수 있겠지.

이제 곧 영화 개봉이다. 지난 촬영을 떠올려 보자면.
<스피드 레이서> 촬영 때는 진동이 강한 작은 모형 차 안에서 허리가 끊어질 것 같은 고통을 참아내야 하는 과제가 있었다. 그때는 쉬라고 해도 괜찮다고 대답했다. 당시 강렬한 인상을 남길 수 있었기에 워쇼스키 형제와 다시 한번 작업할 기회를 가진 것 같다. <닌자 어쌔씬>은 촬영 자체의 어려움보다는 몸을 만들 당시의 고통이 워낙 컸다. 덕분에 그 다음이 쉬워지긴 했지만.
액션 영화는 처음이었는데 어려움은 없었나. 연기를 하다 보니 액션을 하는 즐거움, 그에 따르는 고통이 있다는 사실을 알게 되더라. 재미있는 것은 액션을 할 때 합을 맞추는 게 마치 춤출 때 안무를 하는 것과 비슷하다는 점. 그리 어렵게 느껴지지 않았던 이유이기도 하다. 하지만 춤과 달리 액션은 굉장히 위험해서 한 순간도 방심할 수 없었다.
<스피드 레이서> 촬영 때처럼 워쇼스키 형제의 배려는 여전했나.
그 이상이었다. 처음엔 부담이 좀 있었는데 다들 편안한 분위기를 만들어 준 덕분에 친구 같은 느낌으로 작업할 수 있었던 것 같다. 본격적으로 할리우드 영화에 참여해 보니 그들의 시스템이라는 게 굉장히 체계적이면서도 기계적이더라. 국내에도 시스템만 잘 갖춰진다면 할리우드를 능가할 영화를 만들 수 있겠다는 생각이 들기도 했고.

9월 개봉인데 지금쯤 편집본을 봤을 것 같은데.
워쇼스키 형제와 에이전트, 그리고 나. 우리끼리 가진 최초의 시사회, 그날의 감동은 내내 잊혀지지 않을 것 같다. 열심히 한 만큼 영화가 잘 나온 것 같아 가슴이 뻐근해졌다고나 할까. 사실 영화 촬영 중에 하루하루 변하는 내 모습에 스스로도 놀랐는데, 이번 영화는 그 어떤 때보다 잘 됐으면 하는 바람이 생기더라. 얼마 전 미국에서 진행한 시사의 반응에도 좋아 기대하고 있다.
이 영화에 출연하기 이전과 이후의 달라진 점이 있다면.
일단 할리우드에서 굉장히 많은 러브콜을 받고 있다. 아무래도 영화 관계자들이 날 이쁘게 봐준 것 같아 흐뭇하다.
가수로 인정받는 것 이외 배우로서 할리우드에 이름을 알릴 것이라 상상한 적 있었나.
전혀. 고된 촬영을 끝냈고, 시사를 한 지금까지도 믿기지 않는다. 데뷔 때 내 꿈은 음악프로그램에서 1등 하는 것뿐이었다. 그런데 점점 목표가 달라진다. 예전엔 뮤지션으로서의 행보에 비중을 두었다면 이제는 음악과 연기에 대한 욕심이 50대 50이다. <닌자 어쌔씬>이 중요한 과도기적 역할을 한 것 같다. 노력한 만큼의 결과가 분명히 있을 거라 믿는다.
욕심이 많은 편인가. 비의 행보를 보면 완벽주의자 혹은 워커혹릭 같은 이미지가 떠오르는데.아직 젊으니까, 더 높은 곳을 향해 발을 뻗어야 한다고 생각한다. 남들이 생각하는 것과 달리 난 아직 성공했다고 생각하지 않으니까. 새로운 것과 깊이 있는 것, 둘 중 어떤 것도 포기할 수 없는 시기라고나 할까. 때로 새롭고, 때고 깊이 있는 모습으로 상황에 잘 적응해야 할 과제가 남았다.

하지만 때로 원치 않는 방향으로 상황이 흘러가기도 한다. 얼마 전 있었던 소송처럼.
아마도. 늘 그래왔는데, 어떤 일이 잘되기 전에 꼭 안 좋은 일이 일어난다. 그리고는 다음 일이 몹시 잘되는 패턴이 반복된다. 이미 지난 일이지만 그 일 역시 더 좋은 일이 있기 위한 밑거름이라 생각한다. 액땜했다고 봐야지……
때로 평범한 일상을 꿈꾸기도 하나.
또래와 다른 삶을 사는 것, 그 시기에 놓치고 가는 평범한 것에 대한 아쉬움은 있다. 하지만 내가 선택한 길이니 주어진 삶에 실망하진 않기로 했다. 덕분에 최고의 아티스트와 평범한 남자 사이에서 갈등한 적은 없다. 어렸을 때부터 꿈꿔왔던 일이니까. 물론 결혼하고 아이를 낳아 행복하게 살고픈 일상적은 꿈은 있지만.
다시 뮤지션으로 돌아와야 할 시기다.
물론. 더 새롭고 깊이 있는 Rain’s World를 위해 준비 중인데, 아직은 공개할 때가 아니다. 가수, 연기자, 프로듀서, 디자이너로 꼭지점을 찍으며 준비하는 모습을 보일 뿐. 다만 시간이 지날수록 인간 정지훈으로서 좀더 편안해졌으면 좋겠다는 바람은 있다. 시간이 지나면 이런 풍경과 마주하는 게 마냥 편해질 날도 오겠지.

5 Nights and 6 Days with Jung Ji-hoon in the Alps

1. How does it feel to be in the Alps?
Feels huge, the mountains look like a painting. It feels like the movies and I wonder if I can be in such a place. It’ s my first time traveling to a place like this.
2. Are you having difficulty because of jet lag?
Not so much, but sometimes yes. I woke up early this time. Each time I wake up early, I go out to the lobby to surf the net and use the internet phone. I always carry around a USB phone that looks like a receiver of an analog phone.
3. Haven’ t you become used to resting now that is finished?
After the 8 months of shooting, I was even busier trying to find cuisines.
Not to mention training a new face and preparing for ‘6 to 5’ fashion show. I just didn’t do much official projects but I didn’t have much time to enjoy for myself.
4. It seems that stories of your grudge on eating have been carried on since before your debut.
Since I wasn’t able to eat much during the Ninja Assassin shooting, I enjoy going around to enjoy cuisines with my colleagues. But I seem to miss Korean food already this time. The heaps of bananas make me feel like a monkey.
5. What do you do in your free time?
I usually, listen to music or watch movies. I listen to classic or jazz to relieve stress. I used to collect cameras for hobby in the past, but I lost interest after all the shootings I had to go through for work. The happiest moment is when I get the time to talk with my close friends.
6. Looking back at the last shooting.
I think I was given the opportunity to work with the Wachowski brothers once again because I endured the vibrating chairs during. The hardship I went through working out outweighs the difficulty during shooting. Although it did get easier.
7. Didn’t you have any difficulties, this being the first action movie.
As I was acting, I realized the pain behind the joys of action. It ’s like choreography in dancing. That’ s what made it ease up a bit. But actions are risky which gives no room for a moment of relief.
8. Were the Wachowski brothers as considerate as in?
Even more. I could work with them as if working with friends. I realized that Hollywood has a systematical and mechanical system. I felt that Korea could surpass Hollywood if proper systems were put in place.
9. You should have seen the clips now that the release is set for November.
The first screening between the Wachowski brothers, my agent, and I. I can never forget that moment. I felt proud that the movie paid off for all the efforts. I started to wish that this would become big. I ’m looking forward to it now that the feedbacks for the screening we had in America were mostly positive.
10. Any differences in you before and after the movie.
First of all, I’ m receiving a lot of calls from Hollywood. I’m glad that they see the good in me.
11. Have you ever imagined your name in Hollywood as an actor instead of a singer?
Never. I still feel like dreaming now that the shooting and preview are over. My passion for music and acting is now 50-50. I think played an important role. I believe that all the efforts will be paid off.
12. Are you passionate? You give off an image of a perfectionist or a workaholic?
I’m still young, so I believe I must reach for a higher goal. Whatever others might think, I do not believe that I have succeeded yet. I still have to adapt to the surrounding environment.
13. But things don’t always go your way. Like the lawsuit you had.
Probably. It always has been that way, before something good happens, something bad turns up. I take it as a fertilizer for better fruit. It could have been worse.
14. Do you dream of becoming a normal person?
I do have nostalgia for the normal life. But this is the road I’ve chosen so I won’t be disappointed in my given life. So I never had any conflicts between an artist and a normal man. Although I do have a dream to get married, have kids and live happily ever after.
15. It’s time to return as a musician.
It is. I’m preparing for a better Rain’s World. I’m just revealing all those preparations as a singer, actor, producer and a designer. But I do wish that I could be more comfortable as a human being Jung Ji-hoon as time passes. In time, I believe facing such scenery would become comfortable.
