"Hollywood has to do it and should do it," said "Superman Returns" producer and former head of Columbia/TriStar Chris Lee, arguing that cinemagoing reflects the leisure occupations of middle income folks around the world.
He questioned how far Hollywood studios are able to go into territories, assemble local stars and directors and then sell to local markets better than their local counterparts. But he added that "studios are definitely in it for the long haul."
Former Fox Atomic exec Zak Kadison said "they have to continue (making local films) because that's where the business is going."
Kadison said that Hollywood studios do not place high emphasis on remake rights or international distribution potential when assessing which local projects and talent to back. Instead, "the studios are only looking at the local market level," he said. Kadison said that studios had to date avoided much local production in Spain and Korea because of high levels of piracy.Lee, however, had better news for Korea when he predicted a massive international future for Korean singer-turned-actor Rain.

[이데일리 SPN 양승준기자] 한국을 대표하는 두 명의 월드스타가 만난다. 서울시 글로벌 홍보대사를 맡고 있는 가수 비와 축구선수 박지성이 서울시가 개최하는 청소년 자선 축구 행사에 함께 하는 것.
비와 박지성은 23일 오후 한강 반포 시민공원 특설무대에서 서울시가 준비한 '맨체스터 유나이티드'(이하 맨유)팀과 서울시 글로벌 홍보대사인 비팀의 자선 드림 매치를 통해 자연스럽게 만나게 됐다. 비는 국내 팀을, 박지성은 글로벌 팀 코치로 나서 한판 대결을 펼치게 되는 것이다.
비와 박지성은 땀과 노력으로 '월드스타'의 반열에 올랐다는 점에서 공통점을 지닌다.
두 사람은 끊임없는 도전과 근성으로 동양인으로서는 넘지 못할 벽으로 여겨졌던 '할리우드'와 '영국 프리미어리그'에 입성하며 아시아인은 물론 세계인의 주목을 받았다. 비는 이에 2006년 미국 타임지가 뽑은 '세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 100인'에 선정됐고, 박지성은 2005년 타임지 선정 '아시아의 영웅 20인'에 각각 뽑히며 세계에 이름을 알렸다.
비에게 '월드스타'라는 닉네임이 제대로 이름값을 하기 시작한 건 할리우드에 당당히 입성하면서부터다. '스피드 레이서'에서는 비록 흥행에는 실패했지만 미국인들에게 한국 배우 정지훈이라는 이름을 각인시키는데는 부족함이 없었다. 또 오는 11월에는 '닌자 어쌔신'으로 할리우드에 두번째 노크를 하게 된다.
하지만 비는 할리우드 입성이라는 결실을 얻기까지 남모를 눈물도 적잖이 흘려야 했다. 미국 진출 초기, 현지 사람들의 무관심과 냉대는 그를 더욱 힘들게 했다.
비는 “'스피드 레이서' 할 때만 해도 ‘저 키 큰의 동양인은 누구야?’ 식이었다. 미국 사람들의 무관심이 정말 심했다. 그런 것들이 정말 사람을 우울하게 만들었다"며 "당시에는 ‘내가 지금 왜 여기서 이러고 있나, 내가 과연 성공할 수 있을까?’란 생각도 많이 했다"고 당시 힘들었던 심경을 토로하기도 했다.
사실 비는 한국을 비롯한 아시아에서 더 편하게, 대접 받으며 스타로 살 수도 있었다. 하지만 그는 할리우드는 지금이 아니면 영영 발을 내딛을 수 없을지 모른다는 생각에 도전을 거듭하며 할리우드의 문을 두드려 지금의 자리에 서게 됐다.
축구선수를 하기에는 나무나 작고 마른 체구를 가졌던 박지성. 그는 고교 졸업 후 연고 프로팀은 물론 대학에서도 지명을 받지 못해 가까스로 명지대학교에 입학한 별 볼일 없는 선수였다. 하지만 '산소탱크' 박지성은 축구에 대한 '열정'과 '노력'으로 세계 정상급 축구선수로 거듭났다.

이 날 행사에는 '월드스타' 비와 박지성, 오세훈 서울시장 등이 참석해 특설무대에 모인 많은 팬들의 뜨거운 환호성을 받았다.
서울시는 2009년도 캠페인 슬로건인 ‘Infinitely yours, Seoul' (무궁무진 서울) 컨셉으로 이번 자선 드림 매치를 개최했으며 박지성과 비가 각각 팀의 코치로 나서 눈길을 끌었다.
또한 게리 네빌, 조니 에반스, 베르바토프 등이 참석한 팬사인회 행사가 개최되어 수많은 축구팬들을 즐겁게 했다.
방한 이틀째 연습훈련 공개를 시작으로 3박 4일간의 일정을 시작한 맨유 선수단은 오는 24일 저녁 8시 FC 서울과의 친선경기를 마친 후 25일 출국할 예정이다.

The city of Seoul held 'Charity Dream Match' event at a specially prepared ground located at the Han River Citizen's Park.
'Park Ji-Seong', 'Gary Neville' 'Dimitar Berbatov', 'John O'shea', 'and 'Jonathan Evans' from MU team appeared on the ground.
The
event started with kick-offs by mayor of Seoul 'O Se-Hoon', 'Park
Ji-Seong', and Rain, and these three received special football
trainings, such as dribble and pass, with the young boy participants.
At
this event's highlight 'Dream Match' which is transformed from the
regular football game, MU team players and Rain acted as coaches. 'Park Ji-Seong' was not able to play the game due to his other schedule.
The
applicants who played the game as 'Dream Match' players, were selected
through 'Global UCC Contest' which was organized by the city of Seoul,
and they were 8 overseas young boys and 9 Korea's young boys who came up
to Seoul from the distant islands and the back countries.
At
the charity bazaar that was separately prepared, MU players' sign balls
and Rain's treasures were put up at auction. All proceeds from the
auction will be used for home and abroad social service organizations.
Mayor
'O Se-Hoon' said, "This event has been planned to let the world know
Seoul's name brand through MU team and Rain who have a lot of fans
throughout the world."
