‘Clouds’ Make Way for Rain

[Other photos are missing]

KoreAm‘s Sophia Kim filed this report, and Elizabeth Kim the photos above, from last Thursday’s Hollywood premiere of Ninja Assassin, starring Rain:

Hundreds of giddy fans of all ages lined Hollywood Boulevard across from the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre last Thursday night, hoping to catch a glimpse, and maybe press the flesh, of the South Korean pop idol, Rain. It was a night that many die-hard Clouds (as Rain fans are called) had been anticipating for months—the Los Angeles premiere of Ninja Assassin, a martial arts action film in which “Bi,” as he is called in Korean, plays the lead role.

Paulina Yeung, one of the artist’s many international fans, said she flew in from Hong Kong just for the premiere. “I want to support Rain, to be here for him,” said Yeung, a retired government worker who wouldn’t give her age, but revealed she has a college-aged daughter. “Him being Asian, I am so proud of him.”

In Ninja Assassin, Rain plays Raizo, an orphan who is trained by the secret-society Ozunu Clan to become a deadly assassin. He later seeks revenge against the clan when his female friend is executed by the group’s leader, played by legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi. Produced by the Wachowski brothers of The Matrix triology and directed by James McTeigue, who directed V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin opens nationwide and around the world on Wednesday. The film also features several Korean American actors, including Rick Yune, Sung Kang and Randall Duk Kim.

But, at Ninja Assassin’s Los Angeles premiere, much of the fan attention focused on Rain. Screaming females greeted the star who arrived around 6:30 p.m, looking quite GQ in a dark gray pin-striped suit and a solid magenta-colored tie. His short hair stylishly tousled at the top, the superstar took off his shades and broke into a broad smile. Much to the delight of his fans, he walked across the street to shake hands and sign autographs.

“It was a dream come true,” Rain would later say during an interview at Yamashiro Restaurant in Hollywood, two days after the premiere. “Wow, so many people! I thought, ‘Wow, am I popular in Hollywood?’ It was amazing.”

Check out more from the premiere and from KoreAm’s interview with Rain in our December issue!

11.19.09 [fan acct] Unforgettable night at the premiere of Ninja Assassin

I was contemplating whether to wait or to share with you now my experience on Nov. 19th. But I think I owe it to my regular co-followers from sixtofive1982 my own account of that day. And by the way, my thoughts and experiences were with all of you: jorain, asmaroc, busybee1982, pluie625, triplegreen, anya, and everybody I have not mentioned, sorry. I really wished we were all together those two nights.
As usual I couldn’t catch my sleep, so on Wednesday night I spent my waking hours reading comments from this site (where else could I have gone) and also watched Legend of Rainism concert in Japan. I was still awake by 8:00Am the following day. The last comment I wrote was when I said that my hands are paralyzed , I cannot comment anymore,I’m getting pretty excited for tonight’s event. After that I got ready, for I have to pick up Terisaurus and Snowball at the Burbank Airport at noon. My husband driving, it took us 10 minutes to get to the airport. It was not hard for me to identify them cuz Snowball sent me her picture.

As it turned out, they were two of the most down to earth people I’ve met. They were both very nice and friendly. And to think that we’ve just met but it seemed that we were like old friends. Later I’ve come to realized the closeness and camaraderie we shared all because of Rain. Anyway, the only things I was able to show Teri and Snowball was the place where Michael Jackson was buried, the Greek Observatory and the Hollywood sign on top of the hill. Soon we were at Greyhound Bus Station to meet dear Kongsao, whom we know is really a Rain fan. She was wearing one of those six to five T-shirts that she ordered online.
We were at the place in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater around 3:00 pm. Yes, that early. But that’s okay because we were able to get good spots. There was a whole family of Hispanics next to us. Can you believe that? They know about Rain more than myself, and longer to boot. They carried with them all sorts of memorabilias that they purchased from a novelty store in Koreatown by Olympic and Western Avenues. They have life size posters of Rain, some large pictures of Rain made with clothing material. They carried with them music from his different cds. It was really awesome. I felt so proud and embarrassed at the same time. Here I am, an Asian, but not overly enthusiastic as these family. And they were waiting there since noon.
Anyway, across the street from us, the construction crew were busy building the scaffoldings that they used as props for the premiere night. After these were finished, men wearing Ninja costumes climbed these scaffoldings and entertained the fans and the tourists. They played soundtracks from the NA movie. Pretty soon the venue was filling with the media crowd. Stretched limousines were slowing down in front of the theatre, only to find out they were just passing thru. It was getting darker and tension was mounting among the spectators. Everyone was getting excited by the minute. We finished signing our names in those Rain banners provided by Diane from Rain Listings. She is so sweet and friendly. Then Jay from R-USA gave us fan posters. Actually, at the party, Jay gave us a lot of things: posters (2), a cd, a little keepsake bag with an R initial; Diane gave out little ninja toys. (Thanks Jay and Diane). Anyway, standing next to me was Paulina. She is from Hongkong, flew all the way here just to see the premiere. I told here to stay with us because she was by herself. She is another friendly character and so thoughtful, very nice lady. She goes everywhere wherever Rain has an important event to attend, say, concerts and fan meetings in Korea, China, Japan. Isn’t she something. I must say she is a loyal groupie. Around 7pm, a stretched limo pulled over in front of the theater and out came Rick Yune and a lady. Mr. Yune went across the street to greet the fans escorted by a couple of bodyguards. He was smiling while greeting the fans, signing autographs on those fans that Jay provided for us. He was saying ” this is a dream come true huh ! , and he signed all the fans’ fans from beginning of the line to the end and then he crossed the street back to the theater. There they started interviewing him, taking his pictures with the other casts and crew of NA. And then fans from across the street started screaming which of course signaled the coming of the main attraction of the evening, none other than Rain himself. He waved to all the fans. A few minutes later he crossed the street, shaking hands with the fans, saying ” Thanks for coming”. Once he was in front of us, he shook hands with kongsao’s left hand and she wouldn’t let go of Rain’s hand. But, Rain had eye contact with me and said Thanks for coming and shook my hand too but I was holding a camera, so I was able to touch him with my pinkie only. (darn camera ! !) Oh my Lordie ! ! I cannot believe it. That stare just melts me away. I thought I was going to have nervous coughing spells. The photographer caught this on camera, did everyone see that? You bet it was exciting. I don’t even remember if I was able to shoot some pictures of Rain after that. After all the excitement from the fans from this side of the street, Rain went back in front of the theatre and there he started answering all questions and took about millions of pictures of Rain for that evening. When they all started walking inside the theater, our group started planning how to go to the get together party. We were about to go to the meeting place to see my husband with my group when this man carrying a bunch of screening tickets for NA asked us if we wanted to attend the premiere showing. Is he kidding us? No, he was not. We grabbed them and on we went inside the theatre. But we were all seated separately. I was assigned at the left side Row 15, seat # 9 ( my lucky no.). Everyone watching was so excited, screaming, clapping their hands and everytime Rain appears shirtless, the girls would be screaming and shrieking and wowing. The men were also screaming. It was so much fun. At the end of the show, everyone stood up and applauded for a well complimented and entertaining movie.
So there I waited for a while for the people to leave. In fact I was waiting for my sister inside the movie. There were two entrances, left and right. I was on the left side. When there were just maybe 50 people left inside, I started for the left entrance door to exit. I was waiting there hoping to see my sister. But guess who’s coming instead. Yes, it was Rain. His bodyguards (bulky ones) , about 4 of them were walking ahead of him, then slowly Rain walked past me. It was kind of dark inside, but Rain was visible from the light outside the opened entrance door. I don’t know what came over me. Was it a reflex or something? Because when he walked past me, instinctively I patted his right “behind”, just lightly, but enough for him to look over his right shoulder. My God ! ! ! Why did I do that I said to myself. He might get mad or something. But he just smiled and went on his way. But I just stood there and reflected on what I did. By the way, I have Laryngitis, I have no voice; that even if I want to say his name, nothing would come out. So there, everyone, that was my confession. I never meant to do that but since I could not call him out, I just tapped his behind. I never targeted his behind but hey ! the man is tall, I’m only 5′3″. Figure that out. Not only was I able to feel the texture of his suit that evening, I was able to slightly feel the firmness of his back, not to mention, the eye contact as a special added bonus. So, to say that I was very happy that night was an understatement. Now that I was thinking about the incident, I’m just glad that I didn’t wear a wool coat, otherwise I might carry static with me and suppose at the time when I touched his back and I had static with me, I could have electrocuted him or worse, we might get spontaneous combustion. Lols. See, the night before it was windy here in So. California and usually there’s too much static when this happens.
Anyway, the night ended peacefully. I believe they had a party at Yamashiro in Hollywood Hills and we went to the get together with other Rain fans. There was a big feast. I met Chong there, Darlene, some Filipino fans, and many more. I believe most of them were members of RUSA.

The following night, our group went to KRESS where Rain made a guest appearance. I believe that night was intended for Rain. His posters were plastered inside the club everywhere you look wherever you go on the third floor. A lot of Rain fans were there. Rain finally appeared around 11:15 pm or so. There were a lot of people trying to catch a glimpse of Rain. I only saw his head, at the very least. He was there only for a few minutes and off he disappeared in the elevator. I’m so happy that Rain’s ordeal in Hollywood is finished. Now he can go back to Korea with peace of mind and confidence that the viewing public will patronize his movie.
Almost a year ago, his fans were eagerly anticipating his movie and before we knew it, we already attended the premiere night and seen the premiere screening. I hope we’ll get to see another Rain movie premiere in the near future and perhaps Rain fans will increase in number in the States as well. But for now, let’s just wish and pray that Rain’s Ninja Assassin becomes a huge box office success here and the rest of the world. Aja Aja !!

09-11-25 the KIDD VS RAIN

When The Kidd was offered the chance to sit down for a one-on-one interview with the star of “Ninja Assassin,” I absolutely jumped at the opportunity. For awhile, I’ve been exploring the idea of expanding “The Kidd Vs.” into areas beyond just my reviews, and interviews have been something we’ve been targeting under the right circumstances. Warner Bros. was kind enough to hook us up with some time to sit down with Rain and talk about the new movie, his experiences with James McTeigue and the Wachowski brothers, and more.

To be perfectly honest, I was a little caught off-guard when he approached me and introduced himself, because I totally didn’t recognize him at all. I was expecting the long-haired asskicker from the film and was unprepared to meet the short-haired, short-spoken guy shaking my hand.

I was warned ahead of time that, while his English is coming along and he’s been getting a crash course while going on this press tour to promote the movie, he still had a bit of a tough time grasping the language. He did have a translator at his disposal at his side, if needed, but he seemed to do a pretty good job working with what he’s been learning. However, as a result, you’ll notice some answers that don’t seem to fit the questions, so it makes for a pretty interesting interview. But there is no question that Rain was a very nice guy, who is very passionate about this movie and you hopefully enjoying it.

With that said, let’s get some questions answered...

The Kidd: I know you started out your debut was a small role in Speed Racer, but it’s kind of the same exact crew working with James McTeigue, who was the 2nd unit director, and the Wachowski brothers and what not. So, for it to be your first American movie, how did it come about, especially working with the Wachowski brothers and McTeigue, who, when their names are attached to American movies right now, there’s a certain expectation. So was it exciting for you to be a part of a major motion picture like this with that team attached to it?

Rain: Well, as you know, the “Ninja Assassin” is Wachoskis producing, James McTeigue directing, stemming from “300” (referring to Legendary Pictures) and “The Matrix.” When we were working on the “Speed Racer,” and Larry and Andy Wachowski offered me, I said yes. You know, how could I say no then?

The Kidd: Oh, of course...

Rain: And we made it.

The Kidd: At least in terms of the visuals, I don’t know coming from doing Asian cinema, TV, and your music career, were you familiar with their work before you did “Speed Racer,” in terms of them doing “The Matrix” movies, “V for Vendetta,” and “Speed Racer,” or was it new to you... at least when you did “Speed Racer” with them, was it something that you weren’t familiar with their styles, or did you know what you were getting into with them?

(Translator clarifies question)

Rain: When I was young, I wanted to be a... I wanted to be a singer and an actor. So, the moviemaking process is very similar between Asian and Hollywood. And the scale is so different. You know, Hollywood is much bigger. I love... You know, I love my work... You know, I love my job.

The Kidd: What I liked about the movie, because I saw it before I interviewed you earlier today... what I really liked about the movie is that it really sticks to being a hard R action ninja movie. And a lot of the American movies now tend to soften how the movies are made, specifically for a PG-13 rating. Was there any concern when you made the movie that they might soften it or discussion that they might soften it? Because a lot of movies now tend to take stuff out to make the rating to get a bigger audience, and then when the DVDs and Blu-rays came out, they incorporate more. I mean, did you know going in that it was going to be a strictly violent hard R ninja movie, or was there concern that maybe we’re not going to go all the way with this and they might try to hedge a little?

Rain: Yeah, this is so unique, because it’s bloody...

The Kidd: Which I love...

Rain: I hope they’ll like it. I hope I’ll have more fans after this film. And, you know, I love bloody.

The Kidd: I mean, I know there are certain American franchises now that have moved that way with the PG-13 like “Die Hard.”

Rain: Yes...

The Kidd: And the “Terminator” movie to try and... especially try to soften the violence part, and the ratings you can get a little bit away with things now with PG-13 that you couldn’t before. But what I really love about “Ninja Assassin” is the fact that, within the first five minutes, you know how violent the movie is going to be. Was that a selling point for you though of how violent it is?

Rain: You know, whatever you expect, you will see more. Did you see the movie?

The Kidd: Yes.

Rain: We have nine clans. You know, we have ninja two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine are alive. I hope people like the movie.

The Kidd: Has there been discussion of taking it to sequels, or...?

Rain: (laughs) Not yet. I don’t know...

The Kidd: Or making this into a franchise, or it’s kinda going to be...

Rain: I told you... If people like it.

The Kidd: Okay. Can you tell me a little bit about the training that went into getting you ready for the role? Because I don’t know if you had martial arts training going into this, but I imagine, in terms of getting yourself physically fit for it and the weapons training, can you talk to me a little bit about what you had to go through to get yourself ready for the role?

Rain: Before this film, when I was growing up, I learned Tae Kwon Do. Yeah, it helped, you know, when I was doing stunts. So I had to make my body fit, like Bruce Lee. I trained for eight months, five days a week, eight hours a day. And I ate only chicken breast and vegetables. No sugar. No salt. Not any soda. No chocolate. I really love chocolate. And, second of all is I learned a lot of martial arts - Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, Kumdo, kick boxing... you know... I learned a lot. It was horrible.

The Kidd: And for how long did you, even still, did you feel that you were ready to take on the physical... what was deemed necessary physically in order to perform to the level you wanted to be at and that James McTeigue wanted you to be at for the film?

Rain: Eight months.

The Kidd: Really?

Rain: Just eight months. I always know [it was] hard work.

The Kidd: There’s been a lot of crossover from Asian cinema to American cinema.

Rain: Mmm-hmm...

The Kidd: And do you have any worry with “Ninja Assassin” being your first big role that sometimes American audiences want to see the same thing over and over. So, is there any worry that you’re only going to be seen as a martial arts actor... for example, the way Jet Li is seen now or Jackie Chan is seen now, where they want to see Jackie Chan do the same thing or they want to see Jet Li do the same thing... Or do you, do you have... I mean, is that your goal? Or do you want to do other things in American cinema? Because I know in Korea, you worked in drama. You did a lot of TV work as well. So, is that something that you’re looking to do in American cinema as well, or do you have that concern that they’re only going to see you as a martial artist?

Rain: I’m not worried, because it’s a new style. You know... I know... I love... I love the Bruce Lee movies, Jackie Chan movies, Jet Li movies, but I’m so powerful. I’m so faster. I’m so young, you know, than them. No... I’m just kidding. (laughs) Yeah, um... it’s going to be huge.

The Kidd: I hope so.

Rain: Yeah.

The Kidd: I do hope so. As far as the... I mean, a lot of it goes into the financing and the special effects, a lot of that is what sells right now... and the fighting part, I think, is also a real selling point of this. Did you have trouble going from a lot of dramatic work that you did...

Rain: Accidents?

The Kidd: Well, going into the action world? I mean, did you... going from strictly, mostly drama work going into a very heavily action-oriented film, was it a trouble adapting...

Rain: Ah, during stunts?

The Kidd: Yes.

Rain: Yeah, I have lots of cuts, even though everybody took care of me. But I still got hurt. sometimes, one day, I pretended I broke my legs. I said, “Oh, I can’t feel my legs.” Everyone’s, you know, “Are you all right? Are you okay, Rain?” I said, “I’m just kidding.” (laughs) Yeah, it was fun.

The Kidd: Another thing I really liked about “Ninja Assassin” was that it’s not so much about redemption for the character, but it’s almost set up to be revenge versus revenge, where the clan is looking for revenge for being shamed by your character, and you’re looking for revenge because the girl that you...

Rain: You know, it’s a... it’s a popcorn movie. It is a kickass movie, you know. Yeah, there’s the Ozunu ninja clan. I was one of them. I... uh... they... one day, they killed my first love, and then I decided revenge to the Ozunu clan. And I love my character. He’s very sexy.

The Kidd: (laughs) He is very smooth in the film. I mean, there are times where you see him... he almost has a “I know I’m bad ass...”

Rain: (laughs)

The Kidd: ...aura to him. Especially when he’s captured, and he’s being held by Europol, and you’re asking to be freed in a certain amount of time, because you know that ninjas are coming to kill everyone, but he seems so calm and so relaxed that...

Rain: Just enjoy. (laughs) Just enjoy.

The Kidd: It’s not a big deal, because I know who I am, and there’s nothing to worry about. So, like I said, I think the redemption part... not the redemption, but the revenge versus revenge with the clan versus your character, I thought, was a very interesting take, because there’s reason for them to come after you and there’s reason for you to come after them, and then it butts heads, as opposed to just... well, you’re just looking out for revenge. So I thought that was pretty interesting. I do have to ask you a question for my readers, because I want to touch on a story that came out this summer, which I also thought was pretty interesting, which was the... ummm... I have to ask you about the Megan Fox story, which I’m sure you’re familiar with to this point. Over the summer, when Megan Fox was promoting “Transformers,” she specifically singled you out that she wanted to meet you when she was touring Korea. Now I don’t know how true the story is, so that’s why I wanted to at least ask, so you could set the record straight and what not. And you basically said “I’m not interested.”

Rain: Uh huh...

The Kidd: So, I had to ask, on behalf of the entire male gender, why you said, “I’m not interested” in meeting...

Rain: No, no... I love her. I love her. You know, this question is... (laughs)... so hard. I want to focus on just “Ninja Assassin” for now.

The Kidd: Okay.

Rain: Sorry about that.

The Kidd: No, it’s... it’s okay. I just thought that... I wanted to at least give you a chance, because, you know, there’s a lot of rumors that get thrown around, so I wanted to see, or at least give you a chance to say “Yes, I said it” or “No, I didn’t” or “I didn’t want any part of it.”

(translator clarifies question)

Rain: I haven’t... you know...

Translator: So it’s not true. He didn’t... he never heard of it.

The Kidd: Okay. All right. Thank you very much.

There you have it. It did feel like he was ducking the Megan Fox question, which is fair if he doesn’t want to get caught up with that or have it be a distraction as he tries to sell his new movie, but I had to ask.

You can check out The Kidd Vs. Ninja Assassin later this week, but definitely know that I wasn’t kissing his ass when I told him I liked the movie. I enjoyed seeing it, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good action flick.

“Ninja Assassin” opens this Wednesday, November 25.

When Shadows Strike: Ninja Assassin Movie Review

Raizo (Rain) is one of the deadliest assassin in the world.  Taken and trained by Ozunu Clan known to be as makers of world's merciless and violent paid killers, Raizo grew up as a skillful and well trained Ninja.  But deaths of his friends haunts him every single day.  One day he can't take it anymore and decides to leave the clan.  Now living alone in the city, Raizo trains more for the final showdown.

Ninja Assassin is one of those Ninja films that shows a very gritty and real representation of Ninja clans in Japan.  Its about time to see a flick showing the ugly truth behind Ninjas and paid Assassins.  The movie shows how Ninjas are trained to be heartless but despite that there will always be a humanity deep inside their persona.

I enjoy watching the fight scenes.  Its indeed a martial arts extravaganza.  Giving Raizo a non-conventional Ninja weapon instead of a Katana (though he uses it on some part of the movie) also adds to the excitement.  I want to complain about the dark sets but that is how Ninjas strike right?  Ninjas move like shadows and moves swiftly through silhouettes.   Most of the scenes are dark but good thing the last showdown has more lights because of the flames.  Raizo's final attack is cool and fluidly executed, though reminds me of moves from some animes and japanese movies.  The violence of Ninja Assassin is far more brutal than Kill bill having more bodies cut in to pieces and more blood splattered all over the places.  It is also has one of the best flesh wound special effects that looks almost real.

Rain's performance as a Ninja is superb.  He don't really need to show emotions.  His skill in martial arts are perfect for this role.  Joon Lee on the other hand who portrayed the Teenage Raizo shows a more dramatic performance since he portrayed Raizo's character on its most emotional state.  Naomie Harris plays a good supporting character as Mikka Coretti of Europol though I can't see any chemistry between her and Rain.

Ninja Assassin is not the best martial arts movie I ever watched but no doubt it is one of the best Ninja related film of all time.  To all ninja lovers out there, this is the movie for you.  This is a must watch.  Directed by James McTeigue and Produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski Brothers. Opening on November 26 across the Philippines, “Ninja Assassin” is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation in association with Legendary Pictures and Dark Castle Entertainment.

Movie review: Ninja Assassin 6.75 out of 10

6.75 out of 10
Ninja Assassin rates a 6.75 out of 10. As usual, this review will be as spoiler-free as possible. Let’s look at The Good, The Bad and The Bottom Line.

The Good
An action movie like Ninja Assassin generally tries to get off to an adrenaline pumping start. These types of films usually have a fight scene or chase scene or something along those lines to immediately suck you into the action. Well, Ninja Assassin stuck to this formula and gives a very bloody, weapon wielding opening sequence. Let’s put it this way, don’t be late or get stuck in the concession line or you’ll miss one of the best scenes in the film.
Throughout the rest of the film, the action scenes remain very well done. One particular scene between two ninjas in close quarters in the dark is especially good. The majority of these sequences are executed very well with some good camera work (with the exception listed below), interesting and gory blood effects, and very good weapon play and CGI to allow the human eye to follow the speed of the weapons. This is definitely an American made ninja movie, but does pay homage to true Kung Fu films of the past with some super-natural abilities and moves and, of course, gallons of blood.
The incredibly talented Rain plays our protagonist, Raizo. His look and physical ability really give a certain level of belief to his character. Shô Kosugi plays the leader of the Ozunu clan, responsible for raising Raizo and turning him into a stealthy killer. This role was also well done and  Shô Kosugi does a great job bringing this despicable, yet understandable character to life. Ninja Assassin also throws in a few funny moments to break the tension and some very interesting scene transitions.
You want a lot of bloody action…Ninja Assassin delivers.

The Bad
As soon as the blood stops pouring from the opening scene, the movie hits the brakes…hard. The filmmakers use the next large chunk of time trying to develop “the story.” The problem is the storytelling method. It gets very choppy and sporadic as the scenes jump around and sometimes flashback, then jump back to the present, etc. The story was decent enough to justify the bloodshed, but is told in such a way that is neither interesting nor does it flow in a way that makes any sense. Obviously, a film like this is not focusing on a deep, meaningful story, but it would be nice to have a decent one to keep us interested between battles. Ninja Assassin certainly didn’t have a story like that.
Other than the couple main ninjas and ninja master, the acting was pretty lousy all around. Naomie Harris played the female lead role of Mika, who was trying to uncover the mystery of these ninja clans and Ben Miles played Mika’s boss and ally, Ryan Maslow. These two characters were meant to carry the bulk of the story and give Raizo some people to protect against the evil assassin clan. However, after a few minutes of seeing them on screen you really couldn’t care less if these characters lived or died. There was no connection.
Probably the best scene in the film is a chase through busy streets (this was in the trailer, so no spoilers). The problem with this scene was that it was filmed with a non-mounted, “free” camera where the cameraman is on foot and runs around filming the scene. This gives an “I’m right there in the action” feel to it, but makes it incredibly hard to decipher want is transpiring. It’s a shame that the filmmakers decided to use this technique for this particular scene because it would have been much cooler with stationary shots.
The only other problem was the classic good guy versus bad guy while all others pale in comparison plot. Raizo, Takeshi (the main evil ninja), and Ozunu (the ninja master), were the only ninjas with any real skill. Meanwhile, all the other nameless ninja clan members were beaten in waves with only a small level of difficulty. Again, you have to have the protagonist be able to defeat the bad guys, but it just seems that some filmmaker out there would find a way to do this without using such a tired cliché. I mean seriously: did Ozunu only have 2 good ninja students out of the dozens in the movie? If so, he needs to reevaluate his teaching methods.

The Bottom Line
If you are a fan of Kung Fu films or really bloody action-packed American-made martial arts movies, than you may want to check this out in theaters. If you enjoy these things, but can wait for the rental, do so. There is nothing about this film that can only be enjoyed on the big screen. Parents, obviously use caution. Saying that the violence and gore is over-the-top may be an understatement.

Hero Who Can’t Keep His Shirt On

The best thing about “Ninja Assassin” is its refreshingly honest title: unlike those few, unwary souls who rush to “Precious” solely on the strength of its twee title and happy-go-lucky television trailers, no one who sees “Ninja Assassin” can reasonably complain about the violence.

Which is just as well, because this saga, set in Berlin, is more committed to its bloodletting than to any of its characters. The plot, when glimpsed between flying body parts, concerns Raizo (the South Korean former boy-band member Rain), a rogue ninja with a grudge against the clan that abducted him as a child and killed his ninja honey.

That makes him very useful to Mika (Naomie Harris), an Interpol-style cop who suspects world governments of hiring ninjas to do their dirtiest deeds. If only Raizo would keep his shirt on, then maybe she could concentrate enough to prove it.

Perhaps in homage to his rippling star (whose martial arts prowess I’m not qualified to judge but whose hotness, whether throwing knives or folding laundry, is self-evident), the director, James McTeigue, rarely misses an opportunity to drench the film in water.

Flashbacks to ninja training school — first love, first wounds, first downpour — are quite lovely, making us wish that the film had remained in the past and avoided the present-day blurs of shadowy, red-and-black action.

Ninjas may be slippery when wet, but if we learned anything from Indiana Jones, it’s that bullets trump sharp objects every time.

“Ninja Assassin” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Bodies are halved, beheaded, dismembered and consigned to an eternal “spin” cycle.

[fan account] Met Rain in San Francisco

credit to sisi@rainlegend

Yesterday, I went to the Ninja assassin prescreening at SF Centre theater. To our surprise, Rain showed up before the movie started!  Everyone was so excited to see him. Rain said hi to everyone and the crowded room was filled with all these screams shouting "Rain! Rain! Rain!" It was just awsome!

Then I learnt Rain's flight to HK and went to see him off today. I was waiting at the airport for him to show up and when I saw him with an assistant. It looked like he was in a hurry because he walked so fast. Finally he arrived at the security check line. So I went up to him and asked for his signature but his assistant said "No, no, no, we are in a hurry". At that moment the lovely voice of Rain said "It's Okay, It's Okay. Give it to me" I thanked him and he signed on my Rainism CD. After he signed my CD, he went to the security check line and I said bye to him.  Rain is so sweet and I wish HK fans will give him a warm welcome!

In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East.  Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders.  Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune), to silence her forever.  Raizo saves Mika from her attackers, but he knows that the Clan will not rest until they are both eliminated.

Now, entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse through the streets of Europe, Raizo and Mika must trust one another if they hope to survive…and finally bring down the elusive Ozunu Clan.

Simply Titled, Simply Fun: “Ninja Assassin”

I’m so glad I got to review this movie! Let’s face it, ninjas are awesome, not as awesome as pirates, but a close second place. Unfortunately, ninjas have been hiding from the media lately. There hasn’t been a movie about the shadow warriors in a long time, but the ninja may be coming back into the  mainstream public. Prepare yourself to enter a land of mystic powers and really, really, really violent and angry ninjas.

Alright, do you want take a guess at what the story is about? I hate to ruin the suspense, but it’s about ninjas…and assassins. It’s not hard to tell that this movie isn’t too heavy on storyline, but I’ll sum it up for you anyway. I’m fairly sure that Raizo (Rain) is an orphan out on the streets, until  he is taken by the Ozunu Clan to a hidden temple in the mountains. They train him, along with other boys and girls, to become ruthless, cunning ninja assassins. All of the training sequences feel very 300-ish, but there are some fairly cool parts. So, Raizo falls in love with another ninja girl who doesn’t want to be a ninja. She would rather live life happily and grow trees, but Raizo definitely wants to kill people. Things change when Takeshi (Rick Yune) punishes her for trying to run away, which makes Raizo turn on his clan and go rogue.

Years go by, with no real explanation of what happens during this break, until an agent from Europol, Mika (NaomieNinja Assassin Harris), figures out that the Ozunu Clan is still doing high profile hits for 100 pounds of gold. She becomes the next target, but Raizo intervenes and they begin their CGI fueled journey to take down the Ozunu Clan.

The very first thing you’ll notice while watching Ninja Assassin is that it’s extremely violent. Seriously, it was shocking to see how violent it was. Personally, I loved every second of it. Most of the blood, guts and blades were CGI, but during the fast paced action scenes, it doesn’t really matter.  Not to sound cold, but the over-the-top gore was just plain fun to watch and never really got old. Some people may be offended or disgusted, but in this day in age where we’re all desensitized by the demons in our televisions, I don’t think there will be much of a stink about it.

Don’t expect this movie to be winning any Oscars with the acting, but I can’t say that all of the acting was completely awful. Rain and Naomie Harris do a decent job, along with some of the supporting cast. I have to say, I loved hearing the cliché ninja voices throughout. It really felt like watching one of the campy 80’s ninja movies. The characters are generic, but still fun to watch. One of the main ”bad” ninjas pulls off some epic Darth Maul moves, using his double-bladed sword. It’s laugh-inspiring fun to watch all of the ninjas facing off with “guns blazing” special agents.

The environments that the movie taNinja Assassinkes you to are very aesthetically pleasing. There are fight scenes that take place in a dojo filled with dangling fireballs, dark, city streets and the temple that the ninjas are trained in looks pretty nifty. I think that if they hadn’t had such dramatic environments, the fight scenes wouldn’t have had such a great vibe. It was a blast seeing the great scenery while a bunch of ninjas fight to the bloody end. I mean, what could be more fun?

Another interesting thing about this movie was how they portrayed the other ninjas. Instead of them being men in pajamas with shiny toys, they did a great job of making them seem like monsters. Occasionally, I’d forget that I was watching an action movie, because they made it seem like a horror movie with evil creatures lurking in the shadows. Imagine the movie Aliens, but replace the aliens with ninjas. I really liked this unique take, because just seeing guys sword fighting was a very tired method of making ninja movies.

I’ll admit, this movie isn’t “technically” good: for some reason, all the ninjas speak Ninja AssassinEnglish, the music is a generic blend of metal/techno/old Japanese strings and flutes, the acting is not particularly good, the story is weak, etc. The list is long, but I can honestly say that the entire movie is redeemed by one quality. It’s fun! Sometimes, movies don’t have to be deep or well done, as long as they accomplish the goal of entertainment. People were cheering and applauding throughout the entire movie when there would be memorable kills or ridiculous action scenes. So what if people are dual wielding desert eagles and blowing off ninja’s legs?

I know that this movie isn’t going to win any awards, but isn’t it enough to just be entertained for an hour and a half? I would be willing to go see this one again with my friends, just to see all of the fun fights and kills. I don’t think that anyone is going into this movie expecting much other than ninja’s killing each other in brutal and beautiful (brutiful?) ways. I know that some critics will just throw this movie aside because of it’s flaws, but I say that Ninja Assassin delivers on the fun, the laughs and the entertainment.

I give Ninja Assassin 3.5 “Gruesome Scenes” out of 5

Ninja Assassin: The epitome of excellence in film entertainment

by Fiore Mastracci | November 24, 2009
Discuss Article NINJA ASSASSIN

We've all seen the story before %u2013 a special band of assassins with unbelievable skills, unknown to the world, until one goes rogue. Hunted from both sides, he seeks his own brand of justice and morality where none exists. The genre was epitomized in Chuck Norris' AN EYE FOR AN EYE. In that film, Norris heard whispering voices each time the ninja were near. There is a respectful nod to that film element in this movie.

So, what makes NINJA ASSASSIN so different? Simply, the professionalism of the folks behind the camera. Together they have combined to produce one of the best action and martial arts films in quite some time. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie, it entertained me from beginning to end and I will most certainly add it to my own personal video collection. As such it exemplifies the epitome of excellence in film entertainment and earns the honor of the FIST OF FIORE AWARD for 2009. To date, only two films have earned this distinction for this year. NINJA ASSASSIN now joins STAR TREK as examples of the year's best.

Let's talk about the crew. NINJA ASSASSIN was penned by J. Michael Straczynski who earned my respect when he was scripting one of the better sci-fi television shows, BABYLON 5. His script is transformed into visual action by the Wachowski Brothers, Andy and Larry. Certainly these two are no strangers to stylized action yarns having reinvented the term with THE MATRIX. Toss into the mix the granddaddy of action films, Joel Silver and you have a combination that performs at the top of its game.

Additional credit is also due to Director of Photography Karl Lindenlaub whose use of angles is superb, especially for the matted and SFX shots. And, Editor Glen Ganziano, who with the exception of one small section of flashback at the film's fulcrum, splices together a non-stop visual extravaganza.

KEY SCENES TO LOOK FOR:
1. THE TATTOO PALOR
2. THE SILHOUETTE FIGHT
3. THE ESCAPE FROM THE JAIL
4. THE FIGHT IN TRAFFIC
5. THE CLIMAX FIGHT

Starring in NINJA ASSASSIN is Rain, as the protagonist Raizo. Rain is best known as a member of a boy band in the Orient, and there's a cleaver tag line thrown his way in the jail scene. As an actor, Rain is a pretty good singer, but he does have the moves, I'll give him that (apologies to Christopher Walken). He works his magic with a cycle bladed manriki, gusari which makes for slick visuals when he whirls it in the Wachowski's patented bullet time. Rick Yune is Takeshi, one of the film's antagonists. Yune is no stranger to fans of marital arts films. His credits are numerous and impressive. He is in top form here. Sho Kosugi, who during the martial arts film craze of the 1970's made a name for himself by starring in a series of ninja films plays NINJA ASSASSIN's main villain. He is deliciously ruthless.

So while the story is a familiar one, it is penned "with kitchen prose and gutter rhymes" (apologies to Ian Anderson) in easily digestible fashion and enveloped in top line SFX in nearly non-stop flow. Excellent martial artists, coupled with excellent technicians, is it any wonder NINJA ASSASSIN is an FOF winner.

RATING FOR NINJA ASSASSIN = A
BFCA RATING = 10/10

NA reviews

To put it bluntly, a review for a film called Ninja Assassin is entirely unnecessary.

You may or may not be interested to know that the film is partly produced by the Wachowski brothers, of The Matrix trilogy fame. Or that Director James McTeigue also fronted V for Vendetta. Or that Rain, the famous South Korean singer, pop dancer and model, stars as Raizo, the titular ninja assassin.

No, you know whether or not you’re going to see this movie based off of the title alone, and nothing a reviewer, such as myself, will say is going to change your mind. The fact of the matter is that Ninja Assassin is exactly the sum of its part, nothing more and nothing less. Yes, it’s about a ninja assassin, who often assassinates more than one ninja at a time. Yes, there are plenty of action sequences on display. Yes, the dialogue suffers from cheesy writing and ham-fisted delivery. And yes, the story is only slightly thicker than paper.

But to be honest, this is one entertaining, if not over-the-top, movie. After the brazen pomposity of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the marginally better G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and the overblown mega-spectacle 2012, it’s nice to see a movie that is very clearly, and very simply, having fun with itself.

Director McTeigue knows what his audiences want, and he isn’t afraid to give it to them. Even before the title screen, at least ten bodies drop in an orgiastic haze of rapid gunfire, shurikens, and gushing, cartoonish blood. The rest of the film is pretty much no different.

The simple plot exists only as a pretense for the violence, and yet it is actually thicker than it has to be. There’s a shadowy clan that kidnaps children and trains them to become ninjas, and also two Europol operatives that want to destroy it. Some themes about family and betrayal are thrown around, but those really aren’t that important.

The biggest draw for this sort of film is the violence. There are some mighty fine sequences here, packed with lavish choreography and incredible cinematography. Unfortunately, all of the fights are essentially extensions of the same thing, only with different or enlarged set pieces. Still, they do remain enjoyable, even if there isn’t much variety.

An annoying problem with the action is the use of digital effects to enhance the images of swords and blades or to increase the amount of blood on screen; the scenes are impressive enough as it is, and these sorts of things are a bit distracting. This gives the film a certain feel that, combined with the ultra-fast pacing, is reminiscent of a video game. Also, there are some elements in the film that are just plain stupid, such as the whisper chatter the ninjas adopt when appearing out of the shadows.
But then again, Ninja Assassin won’t win an Oscar; instead, it will make millions of dollars. It is the last of the adult-themed action capers for the year, and if you know what you’re getting yourself into, you’ll probably enjoy yourself.

The verdict: Gratuitously violent and gleefully bloody, Ninja Assassin is the year’s guiltiest pleasure, even if it’s really just a one-trick pony.
C+
