[Nov-09-2009]Rain said, "No blue screen was used during the Ninja Assassin shoot."
I attended the Ninja Assassin shoot, determined to bring sure death."
After
Rain's first hollywood leading role movie Ninja Assassin
(director/James Mac Teigue) opened itself to the public for the first
time in Korea, he spoke to Sports Hankook reporters. Ninja Assassin
preview was given in Korea before its promotion in America.
Rain
spoke his mind, "I was determined to bring death, building up my body
and acting my actions with the movie 300's stunt team. I thought during
the shoot, 'It's the only way I must do', and was determined to
accomplish the objective without fail." after the VIP preview of Ninja
Assassin at Lotte Cinema in Kwangjingoo, Seoul, on the 6th.
In
the movie that was full of action as expected, and caught the eye of
many with its bloodier scenes than expected, Rain showed his astounding
actions with the reveal of his perfect muscles as the character of Raizo
under Ozunu's command.
Rain
laughed by saying, "In spite of a hollywood movie, it wasn't ever shot
against the blue screen. I was asked to act after many rehearsals.
During the shoot, they tied my body to the end of a wire, but I actually
did the stunt actions later because I was not satisfied though. When I
was clinging to the overhang, jumping down at altitude, I also had my
nails off, however, that was not really a problem."
Rain
has been receiving attention from the hollywood as an action star over
'Bruce Lee', and is expected to be portrayed as new paradigm of action
in the 21st century because he is taller and more energetic than 'Bruce
Lee'.
Rain
also played the exceptionally difficult part with surprising depth and
great emotion in the movie. On the day, 'Lee Hyo-Li', 'Girl Generation',
'Kim Seon-Ah', 'Lim Soo-Jeong', 'Cha Taw-Hyun', and 'Lee Cheon-Hee'
participated in the VIP preview and clapped their hands.
Rain
added, "It'll play in 2,800 theaters all over America, so I sure have
high expectations, and hope this movie to do well at the box office."
and '"After
going over to America on the 11th and promoting the movie in America and
Canada, I'll leave for Hong Kong where my Asia Tour concert will be
held at the end of this month."
Movie Matrix's producer 'Joel Silver' and directors 'the Wachowski brothers' have tracked the project of Ninja Assassin over the last decade, and came to shape their plan by starring Rain in Ninja Assassin after working with him during the Speed Racer shoot.
Ninja Assassin ranked as one of the year's top 50 and 10 movies, by UK's 'The Times' on-line and San Francisco's Examiner each.
Rain will hold a press conference with the journalists from Asia countries, Japan, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singarpore, and Taiwan, to promote Ninja Assassin in Korea on the 9th.

[Nov-09-2009] Rain announced he participated in the Ninja Assassin shooting in a ‘do or die’ manner.
Rain’s
(Jung Ji-hoon) first leading Hollywood movie ‘ Ninja Assassin’ Asia
press conference reflected the international spotlight with press from
around the world.
On the morning of the 9th, Ninja Assassin’s Asia press conference was held in Lotte Hotel, Seoul.
The coverage was heated with more than 40 presses from 7 Asian countries including Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
The
press conference reflected the spotlight this movie is receiving with
foreign journalists asking Rain how he felt and his episodes during the
‘Ninja Assassin’ shooting.
-Singer
and actor Rain (Jung Ji-hoon) opened his mouth to tell episodes of
Korea-related scenes in the movie ‘Ninja Assassin’. He said “the
producers became so interested in the Korean culture that they studied
the history themselves.”
He
also indirectly announced his post-project. “It’s too early to say
anything and there’s a lot of restrictions in the contract” he said.
“But I think there will be a sequel if the response is good”.
-Here,
to the question how he endured the difficulties during the shooting, he
answered “I wanted to go back to Korea when times were hard. I wanted
to hold concerts, shoot dramas and movies in Korea. I asked myself ‘why
do I have to live like this’ for 8 months.”
Rain
also, despite his busy schedule and difficult training, factors that
made him stand again were the promises with his fans, pride, dissidents
and his mother.
Rain said “the first was my promise with my fans. 4
years ago I promised that I will work with the best team to produce a
piece for the international market, and I wanted to keep that promise.”
Rain’s
second motive was his pride. Rain responded “the staffs made fun of me.
If I raised a 100kg dumbbell, they would say ‘you’ve no guts’, ‘we’re
good at this’, ‘ I’ve taught Matt Damon and Brad Pitt but you’re the
worst’ which stimulated me.”
The
third reason was his dissidents and negative articles towards him.
“I’ve scrapped every distorted articles and comments” says Rain.
“Whenever I woke up I would read those and think that I’ll show them
what I can do. I felt like it was my obligation to show actions than
words, even if it were to fail.”
And
his last, of course, was his mother. During the tight shooting schedule
and training from 7 in the morning to 10 at night, he thought of his
mother. “My mother woke up at 5 and worked all day, sleeping at 1~2 at
dawn.
I
thought of my family and my mother who worked like that for years for
my brother and I” said Rain. “I thought that I was being lazy if I
couldn’t endure this and motivated myself to go back to the beginning.”
He
continued “At first, even the Americans saw 10% possibility of success
in an Asian, but with the Wachowskis and Joel Silver beside me, people
have started to show interest in me. When the Wachowski brothers
proposed Ninja Assassin to me, I felt that I shouldn’t let go of this
opportunity.”
Lastly,
Rain commented “I could never be lazy for a moment because this
situation right now is worthwhile. I will do my best until the top place
in the Box Office.”
-Singer and actor Rain (Jung Ji-hoon) announced he participated in the shooting in a ‘do or die’ manner.
“(This
is all) a happy moment ” he said. “I’ve really asserted my effort. I
always say I do thing sin a do or die manner, but this time was for
real.” Rain added “90% of the stunts were done by me. The wire action
itself was more like balancing my body and I tried to make my body
light. I burned all my body fat. That was the hardest part.”
To
the question on how difficult the Hollywood system was, Rain replied
“Hollywood system at first seemed huge and frightening, but it turned
out to be comfortable. It was easier to work with because it provided
that environment.
There
were no difficulties with the staff. ” In this movie where he shifted
from a support role to a leading role, Rain said that he focused on the
expressions the director wanted, and the sensitive acts such as the
movement of the eyebrow, instead of focusing on the lines.
By
appearing in ‘Speed Racer’, Rain’s previous piece, Rain took his first
step to the American market with his first leading Hollywood movie
‘Ninja Assassin ’.
In
the film, Rain acts as Raizo, an orphan who gets picked up by the
legendary secret organization, Ozunu, and trained as a secret weapon,
but vows revenge after seeing his loved one being executed.
For
this piece, Rain received intensive training. Rain is known to have
received 5 hours of martial arts training, 1 hour long fitness program
and 6 hours of reorganizing the body and physical abilities through
programmed eating for 6 months.
In the movie, he unveils his ability to use weapons such as chains, dagger, double daggered sword, shuriken and so on.
‘Ninja
Assassin’ was directed by James McTeigue from ‘V for Vendetta’ and
produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers. It stars Naomie
Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune, Sho Kosugi.
This movie will be released on November 26th all over the world. (by Korean time)

Article re Birth of a Ninja Movie (Rain's part)
BIrth of a Ninja Movie
30 NINJAS: James McTeigue, the film’s director, said that the Wachowskis came up with the concept of the film while talking with you and your company. Were you part of that discussion?
CS: Well, I guess it all started when we began shooting Speed Racer in Berlin at Babelsberg Studios. My partner, Dave Leitch, and I were over there — we often work with Larry and Andy [Wachowski] on most of their [movies], as their stunt coordinators and choreographers. It was our job to teach some of the cast to do some of the funnier fight scenes in the movie and train the cast on some fight choreography and techniques. A couple of weeks into production, Larry introduced us to a Korean pop star named Rain, who I’d never heard of before. At first Rain wasn’t initially included in much of the action sequences, so Larry asked us to take a look at him and give a quick little evaluation of what he could do. Dave and I already had our work cut out for us, so we were like, “OK, we’ll give him a move or two and see how he does.” We thought, just give him some loud sound effects and all will be good.
So Rain comes in for the first day of training, and he picked up not one, not two, not three moves — he picked up everything that we threw at him, very, very quickly. Granted they were very easy motions, but he moves like a professional. Rain was still getting his English going, and a lot of it was still through a Korean interpreter, and Rain was also very, very quiet and very shy to us at the time, but it became very obvious that he had immense physical skills. So in the next couple of days in training we started pushing him more and more. More for our own amusement, to see how far he could go and how good he really was on the outside parameters of his talent. Well, two weeks later, we still hadn’t hit those outer reaches — he was picking up choreography, he had a fantastic memory, and his energy and performance were fantastic. His martial arts were a little rough on the edges — but physically, he was capable of doing anything that we threw at him.
So we went to Larry and Andy a couple of weeks later to show them the rehearsal tapes (we had shot a little rehearsal, not really related to Speed Racer, just to show them how good he was). At the time, Larry and Andy hadn’t seen how good he was either; they had just met him somewhat formally. So we showed the tapes to them, and they were like, “Wow, he’s really good!” And we were like, “Yeah, he’s really good. We should give him some more stuff in the movie.” So we ended up doing a couple of different fight scenes, and granted, Speed Racerwasn’t a fight movie, but we tried to put in a few little things to show off Rain’s physical promise. Well, as time went on Rain continued to train with us, even after he’d shot his sequences, just to have fun and get a little time off set. We’d known Larry and Andy since the first Matrix movie, so we’d always joked about doing one of our favorite types of movies: We liked Bruce Lee movies, we liked comic books, and we like anime — and everyone loves ninja movies — and we’d love to do a ninja movie. Larry always said, “Ninjas, ninjas are great.”
So a couple weeks later, after we’d worked [even more] with Rain, we went back to Larry and Andy after lunch, and said, “Hey, we think we found the guy for your ninja movie.” And we showed him more tapes of Rain doing his thing, and we talked about it, and then that was all that was said. Speed Racer wraps, and about a month and a half later, we get a phone call from Larry Wachowski: “Let’s do a ninja movie. We’ll keep it small, and we’ll do a fun little ninja movie. We’ll bring all the guys back, and we’ll have fun.” And that’s kinda how it all got started. They got James [McTeigue] on board, and they started doing the writing, and we started getting our stunt team together, because everyone wanted to make it very much a stunt and fight movie, and we got in some of our best guys through our company.
