Rain's ninja role draws inspiration from Lee, Chan
SEOUL, South Korea – South Korean pop star Rain says he drew inspiration from fellow Asian stars who successfully crossed over to Hollywood when he prepared for his first leading role in an American film.
"I watched a lot of action films of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan to create a different, unique character in the movie," the 27-year-old actor-singer said Monday at a press conference in his home country to promote "Ninja Assassin."
Jeong Ji-hoon, who goes by his stage name Rain, was first recognized in the region for his singing and slick dance moves. He first gained exposure in the West when Stephen Colbert parodied one of his music videos on his show, "The Colbert Report," in May 2007, which led to a second spoof _ a "dance-off" with the U.S. comedian. He made his Hollywood debut alongside Emile Hirsch in Andy and Larry Wachowski's 2008 thriller "Speed Racer."
In "Ninja Assassin," Rain plays an orphan adopted and trained into a deadly assassin by the secret society Ozunu Clan, only to turn against it when he finds out that the group's leader executed his friend.
"Speed Racer" posted mediocre box office numbers and all eyes are on whether Rain can carry "Ninja Assassin," which will hit theaters on Nov. 25.
The South Korean star said for now, he's just glad if he can pave the way for more Asian faces in Hollywood.
"I hope the movie reaches the No. 1 at the box office, but regardless of the numbers, it will open doors for more opportunities in Hollywood not only for myself but for other Asian actors," he said.
"Ninja Assassin" director James McTeigue said in a press statement the Wachowski Brothers, best known for "The Matrix" trilogy, eagerly recommended Rain to him.
"The day that Rain did his first scene in 'Speed Racer,' the Wachowski brothers called me and said, 'This guy is unbelievable.' And we began to plan 'Ninja Assassin' immediately," McTeigue said. The Wachowski brothers produced "Ninja Assassin."
Rain was equally grateful to the Wachowskis, saying Monday meeting them was "one of the life-changing experiences in my life."

Warner Bros. Pictures has provided ComingSoon.net with the full gallery of photos from director James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin, opening November 25th and starring Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Sho Kosugi and Rick Yune. You can view the 3-page gallery by clicking here or on the photo below!
Raizo (Rain) is one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them...and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge. In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders. Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune), to silence her forever. Raizo saves Mika from her attackers, but he knows that the Clan will not rest until they are both eliminated. Now, entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse through the streets of Europe, Raizo and Mika must trust one another if they hope to survive...and finally bring down the elusive Ozunu Clan.

[11-12-09] Just back from Ninja Assassin advance screening in DC
It was full house with movie fans from DC. Rain came to say a few words before the movie started. He was extremely handsome in red leather jacket. And he was in very good mood too. He hugged a fan and gave lots of autographs. Then he took pictures with a little kid and a fan. When he left the theater, he was so happy that he hitted five with his manager^^
Also the movie is great!!! Bloody, violent but also entertaining. To me the best part is Rain's martial arts and built body
The audience gave loud applause after the movie ended. I asked several media ppl and they all love this movie. They are all excited that tomorrow Rain will do interviews with them.
Below is a T-shirt I won.

[Fan acct]Ninja Assassin Advance Screening at Washington DC on Nov-11-09
Today is a special day for me and many other fans. Because Rain is in USA and his official promotional event has began. Rain arrived safely at Dulles Airport this morning. Then, he surprisingly attended the advance screening tonight. The screening organizer has also invited several martial art teams for entertainment before Rain's greeting speech. Rain wore red jacket, black belt, blue jeans and brown boots. He looked so handsome. He basically said his name is Rain and he came from Korea. He worked hard for this movie and hope everybody enjoyed the movie, the movie was little bit bloody and (I think he said it probably would scare you). He smiled a lot and made a cute shy face during the speech (once). But, he was very happy because the theatre room was full house, no empty seats. There were White, Black, Korean, Chinese (boys and girls) come for Ninja Assassin. Great! start!
I took some pictures of audiences lining up outside the theatre room, cinema street view, cinema inside view. Most of people were there around 5:30pm and we began the admission around 6:30pm. The movie began at 7:30pm.
Alice said the "give me five...yeah! with manager". I accidentially took it. I shared it with everybody as well
