Jeong “Rain” Jihoon was born in Seoul, South Korea on June 25, 1982 where he and his younger sister were raised in poverty by their single mother after their father abandoned the family for Brazil. Rain was a very shy child who developed an interest in dancing while in junior high. He continued to pursue that passion at Anyang School for the Arts, where also added acting and singing to his repertoire.
He began neglecting his studies to go out on auditions during his junior year when his mom could no longer support the family as a street vendor due to a debilitating diabetes condition. Unfortunately, he found himself being repeatedly rejected for supposedly being unattractive, because he didn’t have double eyelids.
When his mother died while he was still a teenager, failure was no longer an option. Dedicating his career to her, Rain persevered, and eventually blossomed into a handsome hunk popular enough to go by just one name. In fact, the striking, 6’ tall actor/dancer/model/singing sensation subsequently landed on both Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People Who Shape Our World” list and on People Magazine’s “100 Most Beautiful People” list.
He made his musical debut with the 2002 album “Rain,” and subsequently starred on the TV series “Sang Doo! Let’s Go To School.” His second CD, “How to Avoid the Sun,” was followed by “It’s Raining,” which sold over one million copies in Asia. And his “Rainy Day” concert tour featured sold-out dates in Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan and the United States, including a couple of shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. His fourth album, “Rain’s World,” was released in 2006 and kick-started another highly-acclaimed world tour.
So, it’s no surprise that Rain became the first Asian artist invited to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards. His other music industry honors include the MTV Asia Grand Slam, being named Favorite Korean Artist by MTV, and winning the Most Popular Asian Artist Award in Thailand, as well as the Best Buzz Asia Award at MTV Japan’s Video Music Awards and the Best Korean Singer Award at the Mandarin Music Honors in Beijing.
Here, Rain talks about playing the title role in Ninja Assassin, a martial arts action flick likely to turn the versatile pop icon into a bona fide Hollywood box office attraction.

Kam Williams: Hi Rain, thanks so much for the time.
Rain: Hi, how are ya?
KW: Great, and you?
R: I’m fine. Have you seen my movie?
KW: Yes, I loved it, and I thought your performance was great.
R: Oh, thank you.
KW: What interested you in Ninja Assassin?
R: Actually, Andy and Larry Wachowski offered me the role when we were working on Speed Racer, and I said, “Yes!” I just couldn’t say, “No.”
KW: I heard you had a very serious training regimen for this part.
R: Yes, I trained 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 8 months to try to make body look like Bruce Lee’s. It was hard, and studied a lot of martial arts: I learned tae-kwon-do, aikido, kung-fu, kickboxing, sword, double-sword, chain and shuriken.
KW: Did you have a special diet?
R: No sugar, no salt, and I ate only chicken breast and vegetables.
KW: The character you play in Ninja Assassin had a difficult childhood. Did you identify at all with Raizo because you had a rough childhood, too?
R: No, it was very different from mine, but I loved playing him.
KW: I saw an interview with the actress Megan Fox where she said she saw you without your shirt on, and that she’d like you to sing to her. She also said that she wants to have a date and that she could see herself falling in love with you? Did you hear about her having a crush on you?
R: Yes, I heard about it from my agent.
KW: So, are you willing to go on a date with her?
R: Of course! [LOL]
KW: Have you ever seen the Japanese, reality-TV series Ninja Warrior? I was wondering whether you’d ever like to compete on the show and see if you could master the obstacle course.
R: Ninja Warrior? I’m not familiar with it.
KW: Maybe the show has a different name in Korea. How did it feel to make People Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People in the World List?
R: It was amazing! I couldn’t believe it. That was good news.
KW: Maybe more importantly, you were also named one of the 100 Most Influential People Who Shape Our World by Time Magazine. What did you think about that?
R: I was really surprised because I didn’t think I was that influential.
KW: The Rudy Lewis question: Who’s at the top of your hero list?
R: My mother passed away when I was young, because we were so poor. It is because of her that I’m here. She’s my hero. I love her. I miss her.
KW: Is it true, that you visit her gravesite every time before you leave the country?
R: Yes, always.
KW: You sing, dance, act, model and design clothes. Which is your favorite thing to do?
R: You know what? That’s like asking someone if they prefer their mother or their father. I love all of them, singing, dancing, acting…
KW: Ling-Ju Yen says that you are famous for your dance moves. She was wondering whether you were inspired by Michael Jackson and how you felt about his death.
R: Yes, when I was young, I loved Michael Jackson. He was my idol. I loved him, and I’m still so sad about his passing.
KW: Ling-Ju also asks, do you think that Ninja Assassin will create more opportunities in Hollywood for actors from Asia?
R: Hopefully.
KW: Yale Grad Tommy Russell would like to know: What do you think the likelihood is of a reunification of South and North Korea?
R: I’d very much like to see a reunification.
KW: Tommy has another question: who is your favorite Asian actress?
R: I think Gong Li is the most incredible actress.
KW: Larry Greenberg says that his Korean friends show him great warmth and hospitality. But he has never met any who are like the ninjas he sees in the movies. He asks if ninja assassins are common in Korea?
R: [Laughs] No, that’s just in the movies.
KW: Marcia Evans asks if you are familiar with a Korean jazz singer named Insooni?
R: Insooni? Yes, I know her. She’s a very beautiful and talented diva.
KW: Why did you launch your own clothing line last year?
R: It was always my dream to design a clothing line. So, I did it.
KW: How would you describe it?
R: My clothing line, Six to Five, is very casual.
KW: I know you are pals with a lot of hip-hop icons who also go by one name. Guys like Diddy, Omarion and Tyrese have appeared onstage with you in the U.S. Do you have plans for another concert in America soon?
R: Yes, I have a concert in Las Vegas on Christmas Day. It’ll be huge.
KW: I have to admit that I had been unfamiliar with your music, but preparing for this interview I checked out a lot of your videos, like “The Way to Avoid the Sun,” “I’m Coming,” “I Do” and “Any Dream,” and I was quite impressed. They’re tremendous! Now, I’m a big fan, too!
R: Thank you so much. That is my honor.
KW: No, it is my honor. Is there any question no one ever asks you, that you wish someone would?
R: Yes, do you have a girlfriend?
KW: Okay, do you have a girlfriend?
R: I don’t have a girlfriend, but I need a girlfriend. So, I hope to find one very soon. I’m very lonely.
KW: Well, I might be able to help by spreading the word. I have a lot of female readers. What type of woman are you looking for?
R: I love all kinds of sexy girls.

3 Korean stars take aim at larger audience ... By Jeff Chung

What do Jun Ji-hyun, Lee Byung-hun and Jung Ji-hoon (Rain) all have in common?
They are all trying to break out of the South Korean market and taking on big roles in
Hollywood.

Jun Ji-hyun ( "My Sassy Girl") played Saya in "Blood: The Last Vampire." Lee Byung-hun
appeared in "G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and Rain stars in a highly promoted film, "Ninja
Assassin, " opening Wednesday.

Rain, 27, is famous for his singing, acting, dancing and modeling. His first TV series,
"Sang Doo! Let's Go to School," was a hit followed by another TV hit series in Asia --
"Full House" costarring Song Hye-gyo. Rain has sold out concerts throughout Asia and
received many awards for his musical talent. He also appeared in "Speed Racer" before
landing the lead role in "Ninja Assassin," a martial-arts film produced by James McTeigue and directed by the Wachowski brothers and Joel Silver.

Rain plays Raizo, who was kidnapped as a child and raised by the Ozunu Clan, an
underground band of assassins. Raizo, who has become one of the world's deadliest
assassins, goes into hiding to plot revenge after the clan executes his first love. Other
members of the cast include Naomie Harris as Mika Coretti, Rick Yune as Takeshi,
Sho Kosugi as Lord Ozunu and Ben Miles as Ryan Maslow.

Critics are already giving the film mixed reviews, but considering Rain's world-wide fan
base, I think his lean physique and six-pack will draw women to the theater despite the
buckets of blood and limbs.

It will be interesting to see how a movie with Rain in the main role does at the box office.
This could send ripples through the film industry and affect the future of Korean
celebrities in Hollywood. If the film does well, Korean celebrities will be making more
appearances in future films. It would also be interesting to compare its performance in
Asia to other markets, as Rain's influence is in Japan, China, Thailand and South Korea.
 
The recent films featuring South Korean celebrities all have one thing in common: They
are all action films that require minimal English dialogue. I know many of the celebrities
have English-language abilities that could be convincing for short discussions, but they may not be fluent enough for nonaction genres. As their language skills improve over
time, I hope to see different roles for the Korean stars.

비 "도전하면 박스오피스 1위 꿈도 이뤄질것"

 

(로스앤젤레스=연합뉴스) 최재석 특파원 = "`닌자 어쌔신'은 꿈을 가져다준 영화죠. 늘 도전하면 언젠가 (북미) 박스오피스 1위라는 꿈도 이뤄지지 않겠어요."

한국인으로 처음 할리우드 메이저 영화에서 주인공을 맡은 비(본명 정지훈)는 21일(이하 현지시간) 미국 로스앤젤레스(LA) 할리우드의 한 레스토랑에서 가진 인터뷰에서 이렇게 밝혔다.

지난주부터 북미지역을 돌며 자신이 주연한 `닌자 어쌔신'을 홍보 중인 비는 지난 19일 할리우드에서 화려한 레드카펫 행사와 시사회를 한데 이어 이날 하루종일 LA지역 30여개 언론매체와 공동 및 개별 인터뷰를 잇달아 가졌다.

비는 미국에서 영화의 반응이 좋다면서 그러나 "어떤 결과를 낳는 것도 중요하겠지만 제일 중요한 것은 도전하는 것이라고 생각한다"며 할리우드 진출의 의미를 설명했다. 그러면서 "할리우드에서 한국인의 문화를 많이 보여주고 싶다"고 덧붙였다.

그는 할리우드 진출에서 얻은 경험을 말해달라고 하자 "계속 실패를 하더라도 도전을 해야 할 것 같아요. 자존심이 상해도 더욱더 그것을 이겨내고 열심히 할 줄 알아야 된다"며 도전의식을 강조했다.

15분간의 짧은 인터뷰였지만 할리우드 영화의 주인공을 맡은 한국 배우의 자신감과 꿈을 읽을 수 있는 시간이었다.

다음은 일문일답.

-- `닌자 어쌔신' 주연배우로서 할리우드에서 레드카펫과 시사회를 했는데.

▲ 너무 행복하고 일단 한국사람으로서 너무 자랑스럽다. 한국 사람이 할리우드에서 메인캐릭터로 영화 프리미어한 것이 제가 처음이라잖아요. 아시아인으로도 처음이고. 너무 영광스럽다. (할리우드에 진출하면서) 첫번째 걸음이 아주 좋은 것 같다. 분위기도 너무 좋고 많은 사람이 흥분돼 있다. 프리미어할 때 아시아팬뿐만 아니라 흑인과 백인 팬들도 많아 와서 너무 놀랐다.

-- 미국 언론은 주로 어떤 것에 관심을 보였나.

▲ 어떻게 몸을 만들었나. 어떻게 운동을 해서 그렇게 다 스턴트를 했느냐. 국적이 어디냐. 드디어 할리우드 스타가 된 느낌이 어떠냐 등등이다.

-- 미국에서 흥행에 성공할 것 같은가.

▲ 사실은 어떻게 보면 이것은 제가 주인공으로서 제 영화다. 이제는 드디어 진검승부를 한다고 생각한다. 흥행이 못돼도 제가 욕먹고 흥행이 잘되면 제가 칭찬을 듣는다. 한국 최초로 박스오피스 5위 안에만 들면 이건 성공이라고 본다. 아직 한 번도 그런 적이 없으니까.

-- 얼마전 개봉돼 흥행돌풍을 일으키는 영화 '뉴 문'의 영향은 없겠는가.

▲ 목표가 박스오피스 1위가 아니잖아요. 제 영화가 `뉴 문'에 이어 2위면 더 좋고 5위안에만 들어도 대단한 것 아니겠나. `닌자 어쌔신'은 사실 걸림돌이 좀 있다. R등급이니까 10대들이 못 보죠. 상업 영화라기보다는 마니아층을 겨냥한 장르영화라고 할 수 있다.

-- `닌자 어쌔신'은 비에게 어떤 영화인가.

▲ 꿈을 가져다준 영화다. 첫술에 배부르랴 라는 말이 있잖아요. 첫번째 걸음이 너무 좋으니 늘 도전을 하면 언젠가 박스오피스 1위라는 꿈이 이뤄지지 않겠어요. 사실 이번에는 크게 기대를 하지 않아요. 5위 안에만 들어도 성공이고 천천히 올라가야죠.

-- 할리우드에서 얻은 경험을 전해준다면.

▲ 첫 번째로는 계속 실패를 하더라도 도전을 해야할 것 같다. 이것이 실패할 것이라고 걱정한다면 이미 그것은 끝난 것이다. 어차피 실패할 봐 에야 끝까지 한번 가보고 실패하자 이런 생각이 중요한 거죠. 자존심이 상해도 더욱더 그것을 이겨내고 열심히 할 줄 알아야 된다.

-- 영어공부는 생각만큼 잘 되나.

▲ 열심히는 하고 있는데요. 가장 중요한 건 모르면 물어보고..아는 척하는 것이 안 좋은 것 같다. 어차피 제가 한국인이기 때문에 영어를 잘하기 어렵다. 지금 영어공부하고 있다고 이야기하면서 남에게 많이 물어본다. 더 열심히 하려고 한다.

-- 액션배우 맡고 할리우드 영화에서 하고 싶은 역이 있다면, 동양 남자와 백인 여자 러브스토리의 주인공을 이야기한 적 있는데.

▲ 괜찮다면 그렇게 해보고 싶다. 근데 안될 이유가 없다. 솔직히 누가 제가 이번 영화의 주연을 맡을 것이라고 상상했겠나. 꿈에도 생각 못했는데 이제는 됐다는 것이죠. 로맨스도 제가 스크랩트는 있지만 사인이 안돼 지금은 말할 수 없지만 그 꿈은 갖고 있다.

-- 한국 팬에게 하고 싶은 말은.

▲ 미국에서 영화의 반응이 좋다. 어떤 결과를 낳는 것도 중요하겠지만 저한테 제일 중요한 것은 도전하는 것이라고 생각한다. 할리우드에서 한국인의 문화를 많이 보여주고 싶다. 그게 제 꿈이고. 한국에서도 영화 많이 보셨으면 좋겠다.

am back from the most reminmeber moment foever from our rain primere ninja assassin ok last bare me to the boring acoount on thursday 19th i have arriverd to grayhound bus it about 3pm i would say then felisshi called me she pick me after pivking terisarus and snowball we went head up to the GRUMAN THEATER i took the good spot in the center middle of the AMERICAN APPREAL where everybody are supost to wait for rain and see him when we arriverd their was different fans were watting for rain

were mexcian fans chinese hong kong, plihilipno, korean japan canda and combodian which me of rain fans were standing their i stand in the middle center and about toward 1 hurs i would say 4pm diane from RUSA were pull out the 3 pict poster of ninja assissin their were INTERNATIONAL, CONGRAULATION RAIN , and SOUTH AMERICA WITH OUR RAIN later their diane were handing out the sharpe pen one in gray and the other is black i sing all their of them for rain i give his good luck work more suceesful and we all love u rain. Then after that we went to jay party around 930 to 10:00pm i don”t remember so we went to the party at YONGSUSAN everybody all to be their at 8pm shceduel but we got lucky seeing rain movies so we went their last but it wroted i got their and felisshi also got their we ate andn talk and jay from RUSA start to give rain CF SAMSUNG ANYCALL . as cute toy of ninja assasin toy his FASHION CONCERT and more and RAINISM CD and some ninja assassinnposter to everybody seme to have fun and enjoy theirr fun night out for rain party i meet alot of RUSA they are very nice and fiendly to each other and very awsome am so happy to meet them their as well i took their pict their also chong come up to me and felisshi talk to us she very nice and sweet i meet chong at the party i bet all u would love to meet her she very nice person right chong i am so happy for myself to be part of 6to5 family all this it all chong hard worker and suporter thank to chong and jay for our rain lover and suporter foever thank u so much chong.

it about 8 peoples in my tables i reserved VIP TABLES at the 3 floor with Army Cheng we all to garting together and went inside for the VIP and we all make and went inside the clubs it were very alot of peoples i got their about 1or 11/2 i found out that rain is going to show up around 11 or so so i went to the next door for all his fans can ssee hin man dran their so many peoples i were up closed to the poster borad of ninja assassin but the sucerity told us to pull back up so thatt way us don”t be near rain close to rain it was so bad in therir everybody included guy are also love rain and come for to see him also i was shock and impress when i see all these come together. anway yes rain did show up he were wearing lumaray hat and black oufit he come and wlak back and forth left and righ and put his hand up as he alway normal do when they took his pict rain got took pick by many fans espcail on the very frist roll they got all the way good camera i could not took his pict they keep push us back and froth it so hot inside to many crowed rain only show up for only 5 min he leave back dorr on the elivator every broke apart and i and some other RUSA and felisshi took some pict with rain big boeard of ninja assassin it was good night i drink several liquid and water i dance just one song this is the toward the ending night party it end at 2am i have good time get to talk to new RUSA and know them am happy with this.

As Rain / Bi prepares for the release of Ninja Assassin on November 25th, he's contemplating on what project to take next.

An official at his entertainment company, J. Tune Entertainment stated: "He was given scripts to six projects and he's currently mulling them over and thinking about what his next course of action will be."

In various interviews Rain has stated that he was in talks to appear in a movie with a potential budget of over $170,000,000. Depending on the success of Ninja Assassin, Rain might have a very bright future in Hollywood indeed.
