Meet The Movie Star of The Future

Nov 19, 2009, 12:00pm EST
Dorothy Pomerantz Former Contributor

Chances are you've never heard of Jeong Ji-hoon, better known as Rain. But the 27-year-old South Korean pop star is one of the most famous people in Asia. His 2005 album, It's Raining, sold more than 1 million copies. In 2006 he topped a Time Magazine online poll of the most influential people in the world (beating out an angry Stephen Colbert.)

Now he has his first starring role in an American movie: Ninja Assassins. The Warner Bros film, which hits theaters Nov. 25, tells the story of a ninja who seeks revenge against his teacher and fellow ninjas after they kill the girl he loves.

Studios would do well to pay attention. The film could serve as a roadmap for the kind of mid-budget movies they'll need to be making in the coming years. Expensive movie stars no longer guarantee a film will be a hit. Just look at recent box office stinkers like Land of the Lost (staring Will Ferrell) and The Box (staring Cameron Diaz). DVD sales, which once protected studios against losses on mediocre films, continue to slide. And ticket sales are no longer just about how a film performs in the U.S. (See: "Hollywood's Most Overpaid Stars.")

Ninja Assassin is a global movie by design. Its violence has an almost universal appeal among young men, so the film, which cost a modest $30 million to produce, should perform well in the U.S. It is being strategically released against the female-leaning vampire flick New Moon.

Then there's the overseas market. Rain's millions of fans in Asia will no doubt shell out good money to see him fight on the big screen. Most of the movie takes place in Berlin (which offered the filmmakers excellent tax credits) and the other stars are British which gives the movie European appeal.

"It's critical for the studios to have a mixed cast and use foreign locations," says Ashok Amritraj of Hyde Park Entertainment, an independent production company that specializes in films with cross-border appeal. "The box office revenue overseas has suddenly eclipsed the domestic box office."

Rain came to the attention of producer Joel Silver when he was filming Speed Racer. The film turned out to be a disaster for Warner Bros but Silver and his directors, the Wachowski Brothers, saw potential in Rain, who had a small role in the film.

"We wanted to find a way to create a star like Bruce Lee or even Steven Segal," says Silver. "Rain is charismatic and because of his dance training he can fight as well as anyone. He fulfilled all our hopes and dreams."

Silver, who has a 15-picture guaranteed deal with Warner Bros through his genre production company, Dark Castle, quickly decided to create a martial arts film as a vehicle for Rain. He brought on director James McTeigue who directed V for Vendetta and had done second unit work on Speed Racer.

Rain has few lines in the movie. He's a mysterious character who mostly lets his weapons do the talking. That should also help the film overseas. And he worked cheap. He might be huge in Asia, but in the U.S. he's not even big enough to be featured in promotional material for the film. The poster for Ninja Assassin features Rain but half of his face is off the page.

If the movie is a hit, expect studios to focus even more development dollars on films aimed at an international audience. Rain might become the model for the modern movie star.

Says Silver: "As the business becomes more international and we're looking for international growth, it's nice to find someone like Rain who can travel."

11.18.09 No Rain on Jung Ji Hoon’s parade

KOREAN star Rain, or Jung Ji Hoon, is making inroads into Hollywood.
Not only did the 27-year-old star in the 2008 thriller Speed Racer but he now also takes the lead in Ninja Assassin, produced by brothers Larry and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix trilogy) and directed by James McTeigue (V For Vendetta).
The movie opens here next Thursday.
Rain knows, as a cross-over artiste, that going from East (where he is a Korean icon and an Asian megastar) to West is no easy task.
“Obviously, there is going to be a limitation on what kind of characters I can play but I don’t think it will be a major obstacle for me,” said the singer/actor, speaking through a translator in a round-table interview with Asian media in Seoul recently.
“Language is my only difficulty and I’m working to improve my English,” he added.

Those are brave words, considering his performance in Speed Racer was denounced as unmemorable.

Still, there were bright spots: In 2006, he played sold-out gigs in New York and Las Vegas. Then, Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world.
And he so impressed the Wachowski brothers – who also directed Speed Racer – with his martial arts moves that they chose to cast him as Raizo, a trained killer, in Assassin – their US$50-million (S$69-million) gongfu flick.
Already, the film has been hailed by Britain’s The Times as one of the 50 biggest movies this year, and by the San Francisco Examiner as one of the top 10 most highly anticipated releases.
“I believe it’s a great movie and I did my best. Whatever outcome we get from the box office, I will humbly accept,” said Rain, who, by the way, has captured the attention of the hottest babe on the planet: Megan Fox. In June, the actress revealed that she was trying to fix a date through her manager with “this Korean Justin Timberlake named Rain”.
Rumour has it that Rain replied, saying he was not interested.
When my paper asked why he rejected the sexy starlet, he replied: “Megan Fox is a great actress and I felt really flattered (when I saw that she’d asked me out) on the news. I don’t know what happened or what is the real story behind it.”
But he added: “I would be interested to date her if she asked, though.”
That’s an open invitation for you to come calling again, Megan

11.18.09 South Korea’s Rain wants a torrent of fans for ‘Ninja Assassin’

South Korean pop star Rain says he drew inspiration from fellow Asian stars who successfully crossed over to Hollywood.
“I watched a lot of action films of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan to create a different, unique character in the movie,” the 27-year-old actor-singer said Monday at a press conference in his home country to promote “Ninja Assassin.”
Jeong Ji-hoon, who goes by his stage name Rain, was first recognized in the region for his singing and slick dance moves. He gained exposure in the West when Stephen Colbert parodied one of his music videos on “The Colbert Report” in 2007, which led to a second spoof — a “dance-off” with the U.S. comedian.
He made his Hollywood debut alongside Emile Hirsch in Andy and Larry Wachowski’s 2008 thriller “Speed Racer.”
“Ninja Assassin,” opening Nov. 25, gives Rain his first leading role in an American film. He plays an orphan adopted and trained to be a deadly assassin by the secret society Ozunu Clan, only to turn against it when he finds out that the group’s leader executed his friend.
“Speed Racer” posted mediocre box office numbers. Can Rain carry “Ninja Assassin”?
He said for now he’s just glad if he can pave the way for more Asian faces in Hollywood.
“I hope the movie reaches No. 1 at the box office, but regardless of the numbers, it will open doors for more opportunities in Hollywood not only for myself but for other Asian actors,” he said.
“Ninja Assassin” director James McTeigue said in a press statement that the Wachowski brothers, best known for “The Matrix” trilogy, eagerly recommended Rain to him.
“The day that Rain did his first scene in ‘Speed Racer,’ the Wachowski brothers called me and said, ‘This guy is unbelievable.’ Akand we began to plan ‘Ninja Assassin’ immediately,” McTeigue said.

11.18.09 Ninja Assassin a loving tribute to ’80s action

“Is the world ready for a Korean Clark Kent?”

excerpt from article>>
The other central attraction was the chance to work with Rain, the project’s leading man and a rising star throughout Asia and, now, the West.

“His screen presence and sense of himself is really extraordinary,” the director asserted. “Also, it may be time for a changing of the guard, where all the Jackie Chans and Jet Lis are concerned.”
Born Jeong Ji-Hoon in Seoul, South Korea, Rain grew up in poverty, with singing and dancing skills his tickets to survival and more—although he now describes the Korean talent mill as its own kind of nightmare. After emerging as a backup performer for established star Park Jin Young, Rain had hit CDs, got massive media coverage, and made his U.S. debut in 2006, selling out two shows at Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden.
At the same time, he was developing a parallel career as an actor, with Korean comedies and TV dramas leading to his English-language breakthrough as Emile Hirsch’s Korean teammate in Speed Racer, which is where the Wachowskis entered the picture.
“They said they had another movie for me,” Rain himself said on the phone from Toronto, where he was doing press for Ninja’s North American release.
“Of course,” he added in good, if halting, English, “I didn’t know how hard it would be. I trained for eight months, five hours a day, six days a week, and I had the same diet as Bruce Lee: chicken breasts and vegetables, no sugar or starch. That wasn’t easy. I also learned martial arts, lots of stuff with swords and chains.”
All this cinematic opportunity means that Rain is letting his music go for now, although he hopes to get back to singing and romantic comedies in the future.
“Asian fans have a different view of me. More people in the West have an interest in martial arts, and, lucky for me, dancing is a very good training for martial arts. But I’d like to do action, horror, comedy—everything.”

Fans may have expected James McTeigue’s follow-up to 2005’s V for Vendetta to be another sprawling tale of political intrigue. Instead, he went for Ninja Assassin, an admittedly frivolous genre piece.
The Australian-born director, recently in town for the flick’s debut at the Vancouver International Film Festival, has always been drawn to graphic novels, animation, and bold design.
“It just so happened that I was lucky enough to start my career with a lot of really good things, and they were visually exciting projects,” McTeigue told the Georgia Straight while gazing out a hotel window. “I do seem to have pronounced inclinations in that direction. I got in on the tail end of the Australian renaissance, assisting directors like Bruce Beresford and Samantha Lang, so by the time I got to Hollywood, my credentials were fairly strong.”
The future filmmaker worked as a first assistant director on pop-culture projects like the Matrix movies and Attack of the Clones, and last year—long after directing Vendetta—did second-unit direction on Speed Racer. Except for a Star Wars side trip with George Lucas, much of his labour has been associated with Chicago brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski, also the key producers for Assassin, which opens here Wednesday (November 25).
“I love that filmmaking is such a collaborative effort. I get the auteur theory, sort of, but it’s pretty hard to say that you’re the single most important element on a set when there are so many people involved.”
That may be one reason he was so happy when the Matrix makers agreed to produce the tale of a lone-wolf ninja, on the run since breaking away from an obscure Japanese order that trains indefatigable killers for hire in a remote mountain retreat.
“I do love comics, graphic novels, and games of all sorts,” he said, “and Ninja gave me a chance to draw on that, if you’ll forgive the pun, but also to have elements of film noir, with a heavy use of negative space, as well as some outright horror. But mainly we wanted to make a tribute to the cheesy ninja movies we enjoyed in the ’80s.”

“Asian fans have a different view of me. More people in the West have an interest in martial arts, and, lucky for me, dancing is a very good training for martial arts. But I’d like to do action, horror, comedy—everything.”
So far, he’s been pretty lucky, too, in his choice of Hollywood company.
“The Wachowskis have an amazing ability to make dreams come true. They are actually kind of similar to James McTeigue in the way they direct: they are very humble and kind, and that is helpful when you are kind of a beginner,” he added with a laugh.
The big difference between his last two movies, aside from the size of the role, was largely technical.
“Speed Racer was almost 90 percent green screen,” Rain explained, “with lots of computer work. There was almost none of that in Ninja—just safety wire and old-fashioned special effects, all on the set. No camera tricks, just another kind of dancing.”
There are rumours that McTeigue is in the running for a chance to update the Superman franchise. Just one question: is the world ready for a Korean Clark Kent?

Korean Pop singing sensation Rain is making a name for himself in the movie biz. The talented performer had a small part in the Wachowski Brothers film Speed Racer and it was then that they knew he had to be the star of their next project, Ninja Assassin. Rain trained for months and followed a strict eating plan to become fit and agile to perform pretty well all of the stunts and martial artistry you will see in Ninja Assassin. Tributes Bonnie Laufer had the chance to talk to Rain during a promotional stop in Toronto about working on this non stop action filled film, his strict discipline while preparing for it and how his music career still fits into the picture.
