Korean pop singer Rain, or Jeong Ji-hoon, will take a step forward in his acting career with his new film "Ninja Assassin." He's the first Korean to play the lead in a Hollywood film. Rain says he trained hard for eight months to do his own stunts without wires or computer graphics.

Rain is back on the silver screen after his Hollywood debut in "Speed Racer." He's the first Korean to play the lead in a Hollywood film. He worked with the Wachowski brothers, who directed "The Matrix" trilogy. "Ninja Assassin" is about an orphaned boy who is kidnapped and trained as an assassin. He is assigned to kill the ninjas who trained him. The title "Ninja Assassin" hints at lots of thrilling action. Rain says training for the role was crucial, as he did most of his stunts without wires or CGI.
[Soundbite] Jung Ji-hoon(Lead Actor, "Ninja Assassin"): “I trained six days a week and eight hours a day for eight months.”
He says he was also unfazed by criticism over starring in a ninja film.
[Soundbite] “Since it was my first main role, I couldn't be too picky about what character would play. I didn't want to miss a golden opportunity.”
Rain says he wants to become a world action star like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. "Ninja Assassin" is set for simultaneous release in Korea, the U.S. and Canada November 26th.

In the late 1990s a Korean wave washed over Asia. From TV soap operas and movies to pop music, the region couldn’t get enough of Korean culture and its good-looking stars. But the wave never quite reached the American entertainment industry. At most, Hollywood embraced the remake of several Korean films—including The Lake Houseand, more recently, The Uninvited.
Lately, however, ethnic Korean actors have started to gain traction in American film and TV. Kim Yunjin and Daniel Dae Kim broke through when they were cast in Lost in 2004, followed by Sandra Oh in Grey’s Anatomy and James Kyson Lee in Heroes. This year Korean-American heartthrob Daniel Henney appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as the villainous Agent Zero, and now stars on the new CBS medical drama Three Rivers. Lee Byung-hun took on the role of Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. And John Cho, who played Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, is currently starring as an FBI agent in ABC’s drama FlashForward.
Next up: Jeong Ji Hoon, a.k.a. Rain, a pop superstar in much of Asia but still little-known on the global stage. On Nov. 25, Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers will release their latest big-budget martial-arts thriller, Ninja Assassin, starring Jeong as the title character, who seeks revenge on the secret society that raised and trained him and killed his best friend.
The casting of Korean stars in prominent Hollywood roles reflects the new business realities: Jeong and his peers have a huge following in Asia, one of the few regions where movie audiences are growing. Korea, in particular, has become a key foreign market for Hollywood films, in some cases surpassing the U.K. According to the Web site Box Office Mojo, G.I. Joe earned more this summer in Korea—$13.2 million—than anywhere else outside the U.S.
Hollywood producers are also courting Korean directors who have a proven track record delivering hits for Asian audiences. “Every studio executive here has seen Oldboy by Park Chan-wook, and you can’t say that about a lot of foreign movies,” says Korean-American film producer Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment. Though Korean directors may be in demand among Hollywood producers, they are reluctant to make the leap. “Top directors in Korea have the ability to make whatever films they want with total creative freedom,” says Lee. “With the [U.S.] studios they do not have that control.”
Korean actors face cultural challenges, too. For actors from Asia to make it big in Hollywood, they have to commit to mastering English and networking with executives. “In Asia, for the most part, there is no auditioning process,” says Grace Chen, the former managing director of William Morris Asia, now an independent consultant in Hong Kong. “So for big Asian stars to go to Hollywood and have to audition, it can be quite a foreign process.” Plus, she says, those playing the Hollywood game risks losing opportunities back home.
And Asian actors in the U.S. are still often typecast as martial-arts experts. “Stereotype does still exist when casting films,” says Rain. “Asians have our own broad and unique culture; it’s just that more people have been interested in the martial-arts side than others.”
But things are definitely changing. While it may be a while before Korean actors are cast as romantic leads in Hollywood, references to Korean culture are seeping into American films and TV. “In the past, you’d see a lot of Japanese references, Caucasian characters eating sushi or speaking a few Japanese words. But recently I noticed [they] are being replaced by Korean ones,” says Shinho Lee, a Korean scriptwriter who splits his time between Seoul and L.A. Vertigo’s Lee cites the rising prominence of Korean-Americans at all levels of the film-production chain: “There are more people of Korean descent working in Hollywood than of any other Asian ethnicity.” Especially in front of the camera.

speak to rising international star Rain about starring in his new film -
the hotly anticipated "Ninja Assassin" - yesterday. "The (Wachowski) brothers told me to 'forget about Rain the pop-star because from now on, you're a killer and a fighter,'" the popular singer-cum-actor said during a press conference at the Lotte Hotel in downtown central Seoul.
"And for eight months (during the production), I lived day to day thinking I was exactly that ... I think through this film I'll gain a lot of male fans in the future," he joked.
Known as an object of desire for women from all over Asia, the film is ultraviolent, full of killing and mayhem that may not be for the eyes and ears of his female fans.
"This isn't a film that should be seen by young girls, even though some might find ways to see it," he said.
"When I saw the finished film, I was very satisfied that I could not recognize myself on screen - the guy on screen was very different from the real life Jung Ji-hoon."
Seemingly aware of the legions of fans he has amassed throughout his career as a clean-cut pop idol, the 28-year-old Korean heartthrob showed up clad in a smart double-breasted suit sans the long flowing locks, looking less like the cold-blooded killer in the film.
In order to make the transformation into a deadly, Katana-brandishing assassin, Rain underwent a six-month training regimen concocted by the stunt and fight team that whipped the actors in 2007's blockbuster "300" into shape.
"I trained as if my life was hanging by a thread," Rain said.
"Over 90 percent of the stunts in the film I did myself. It was intimidating at first but after I got the hang of it, it all became very easy for me."
As for struggles with having to overcome a language barrier, he said, "The brothers told me not to think too much about speaking the dialogue."
"They requested that I focus entirely on communicating through expressions, mannerisms, and even the movement of my eyes. I also had a speech coach with me at all times so that helped as well."
After appearing in the Wachowski Brother's 2008 box office dud "Speed Racer," Rain had impressed them so much they created the film specifically for the pop-star.
"The Wachowski Brothers are full of imagination and ideas and they are the type of brilliant people who can take what they imagine and transport it onto the movie screen. I have immense respect for them," he said.
"I hope the film does well and I hope a lot of people go watch it because it would be a lie if I said I didn't have expectations for this film. This film has to succeed in order for other Asian actors to get chances in Hollywood in the future and regardless of how well it does, this has been a challenge that's also been an educational experience."
So are there any similarities between Raizo - Rain's title character - and Rain, the pop-star?
"There shouldn't be any similarities," he joked, noting the high body count that piles up in the film.
"I'm not an introvert like Raizo and I'm very social unlike him. I wouldn't be able to live in solitude."
The film hits Korean cinemas nationwide on Nov. 26.

가수 겸 배우 비(영어명 Rain·27)가 처음 주연을 맡은 할리우드 액션 영화 ‘닌자 어쌔신(암살단)’이 26일 전 세계에서 동시 개봉한다. 비는 닌자집단 ‘오즈누파’에 몸담았던 라이조 역을 맡았다. 지난해 ‘스피드레이서’에서 조연 ‘태조’로 할리우드에 데뷔한 비는 이번 영화로 엔딩 크레디트에 영어이름 ‘Rain’을 처음 올리게 됐다. 6일 기자시사회에서 공개된 영화 내용과 9일 서울 중구 소공동 롯데호텔에서 열린 아시아 기자회견 내용을 ‘R.A.I.N’을 뜻하는 네 가지 용어로 풀어본다.
○ 복수심(Revenge)
영화는 복수에 대한 이야기다. ‘오즈누파’가 비밀병기로 키운 라이조는 조직에서 뛰쳐나와 은인자중하며 조직에 대해 복수의 칼날을 간다. 첫사랑 가리코가 조직을 배신했다는 이유로 살해됐기 때문이다.
기자회견에서 비는 라이조와의 공통점을 묻는 질문에 “내성적인 라이조와, 사람들과 어울리길 좋아하는 나는 비슷하지 않다”고 했다. 하지만 그는 “라이조에게 복수심이 있었던 것처럼, 나에게도 이 영화를 포기할 수 없었던 강력한 동기가 있었다”고 털어놓았다. “매일 아침 눈을 뜨자마자 스크랩해 두었던 안티 팬의 글을 보며 되뇌었죠. ‘기다려라. 꼭 보여줄 것’이라고.”(뭘 보여줄 것인지 궁금증이 남았다. 그는 나중에 ‘언젠가 박스오피스 1위가 꿈’이라는 말로 대신했다.)
○ 춤추는 액션(Action)
이 영화에선 총보다 칼이, 칼보다 맨몸이 더 빠르게 움직인다. 총을 든 자는 칼을 든 자에게 사지가 사정없이 잘려 나가고, 어둠 속에서 몸이 휙 사라지는 기술 앞에선 칼도 무용지물이다. 비가 택한 ‘비밀병기’도 쉴 새 없이 움직이는 몸이다. 체인 표창 단날검 양날검 수리검 등 다양한 무기를 자유자재로 구사하는 액션연기가 흠 잡을 데 없다. 팔다리를 흔들며 쏟아지는 표창을 춤추듯이 받아내는 장면은 오래 연마해 온 댄싱 기술을 응용한 듯하다. 그는 8개월 동안 각종 무술을 익힌 뒤 스턴트 없이 촬영했다고 배급사인 워너브러더스는 밝혔다.
○ 담금질(Intensive training)
어릴 적 발바닥에 채찍을 맞으며 아동학대에 가까운 훈련을 견딘 라이조에게만 해당되는 일은 아니다. 영화 초반, 호텔 방안에서 검정 팬티만 입은 채 물구나무서기를 한 라이조의 탄탄한 몸은 비가 얼마나 혹독한 훈련을 거쳤는지 짐작게 한다. 그는 “워쇼스키가 나에게 주문한 것은 단 하나였다”고 말했다. ‘팝스타 비는 잊어라, 인간 정지훈은 잊어라, 이제부터 너는 격투기 선수이자 킬러다’라는 주문이었다는 것. 체지방을 0%에 가깝게 만들었더니 체형까지 변했다고 그는 밝혔다. 혹독한 담금질의 부작용도 엿보인다. 복수를 성공하고 불길 속으로 사라지는 그의 걸음걸이는 유독 경직된 어깨 때문에 뻣뻣해 보였다.
○ 무표정(No facial expression)
라이조는 내면의 상처만큼 복수심 두려움 등 다양한 감정을 표출해야 하는 인물이다. 그러나 영화에서 비는 무표정 속에 좀처럼 감정을 드러내지 않는다. 영화의 마지막 장면, 복수를 마친 라이조가 오즈누파의 훈련소 담벼락에서 짓는 알 듯 말 듯한 미소는 그래서 인상적이다. 비는 이를 ‘무언의 포효’라고 표현했다. 미국 영화전문지 버라이어티는 “‘닌자 어쌔신’은 여러 면에서 받아들이기 힘들지만, 어떠한 감정이든지 최소한으로 표현하도록 훈련된 라이조와 아무것도 표현하지 않는 비의 능력이 조화를 이뤘다”고 평했다. 18세 이상 관람가

(AP) — South Korean pop star Rain says he drew inspiration from fellow
Asian stars who successfully crossed over to Hollywood when he prepared
for his first leading role in an American film.
"I watched a lot of action films of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan to create a different, unique character in the movie," the 27-year-old actor-singer said Monday at a press conference in his home country to promote "Ninja Assassin."
Jeong Ji-hoon, who goes by his stage name Rain, was first recognized in the region for his singing and slick dance moves. He first gained exposure in the West when Stephen Colbert parodied one of his music videos on his show, "The Colbert Report," in May 2007, which led to a second spoof — a "dance-off" with the U.S. comedian. He made his Hollywood debut alongside Emile Hirsch in Andy and Larry Wachowski's 2008 thriller "Speed Racer."
In "Ninja Assassin," Rain plays an orphan adopted and trained into a deadly assassin by the secret society Ozunu Clan, only to turn against it when he finds out that the group's leader executed his friend.
"Speed Racer" posted mediocre box office numbers and all eyes are on whether Rain can carry "Ninja Assassin," which will hit theaters on Nov. 25.
The South Korean star said for now, he's just glad if he can pave the way for more Asian faces in Hollywood.
"I hope the movie reaches the No. 1 at the box office, but regardless of the numbers, it will open doors for more opportunities in Hollywood not only for myself but for other Asian actors," he said.
"Ninja Assassin" director James McTeigue said in a press statement the Wachowski Brothers, best known for "The Matrix" trilogy, eagerly recommended Rain to him.
"The day that Rain did his first scene in 'Speed Racer,' the Wachowski brothers called me and said, 'This guy is unbelievable.' And we began to plan 'Ninja Assassin' immediately," McTeigue said. The Wachowski brothers produced "Ninja Assassin."
Rain was equally grateful to the Wachowskis, saying Monday meeting them was "one of the life-changing experiences in my life."
