Rain gets own channel
The Korea Herald
An exclusive IPTV channel dedicated to Korean pop star Rain is bringing new meaning to the concept of star-centric television - which, up until now has generally presented itself in the form of reality shows. With a fashion brand and two Wachowski Brothers' films under his belt - one set for release in November - and an Asian tour on the horizon, it seemed that the market for Jung Ji-hoon a.k.a. Rain had reached its saturation point. The only medium left, it appeared, was in the world of publishing - the highly successful star has yet to write an autobiography. But that was not the case. An exclusive IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) channel devoted to the "Full House" star is coming soon, which means that hardcore fans will be able to tune into Rain 24/7, in theory, at least. According to a press release from Rain's agency, J. Tune Entertainment, the channel was originally set to start in mid-August. However, a J. Tune Entertainment representative said that the programs were still being developed. "It will open soon," the representative said over the phone. Slated to feature everything from never-before-seen footage of the star to Rain-related dramas, advertisements, concerts, music videos, and, footage and spreads of SIX TO FIVE - the fashion brand that Rain helped design and plan - the channel will be available through SK Broadband's IPTV service Broad&TV. According to an SK Broadband representative, viewers who want to watch Rain's channel will need to request the channel in addition to subscribing to SK Broadband's IPTV service. "Fans will be able to watch Rain's exclusive channel anytime they want, without restrictions to time," the SK Broadband representative said over the phone. Both representatives of SK Broadband and J. Tune Entertainment said this would be the first IPTV channel devoted to a domestic singer. "It is significant," said the J. Tune Entertainment representative, who stressed that Rain is less concerned about turning a profit and more focused on showing channel viewers aspects of himself that have not been revealed thus far. Not everything, however, will be about Rain. The channel, according to the representative, will also feature new J. Tune Entertainment talent. "Newcomers produced by Rain himself," the J. Tune representative elaborated. Still in its raw form, it is hard to tell, exactly, what shape the channel will take and if it will be able to garner a huge following. If it proves to be a success, it may spawn a slew of similar celebrity-centric channels. SK Broadband began offering IPTV in 2006. |
