[Oct-19-209] Rain chosen as the representative of Korea by CNN.

CNN selected singer Rain and soccer player ‘Park J-Seong' as the representatives of Korea, and 'Talk Aisa' to be aired during their feature program 'Eye on South Korea' interviewed with them.

Since this 'Eye on South Korea' program will be shown on CNN reaching nearly 250 million households from the 19th, their appearances have a deeper meaning.

CNN's major female anchor 'Anna Coren' directly visited Korea and ran off the interview with Rain.

The interview was progressed for about 2 hours over the 30 minutes originally scheduled to be done, and they sincerely talked about his movie Ninja Assassin and current Asia Tour concert including his success story and personal life, also, CNN separately shot even the scene of Rain's concert 'Legend of Rainism' in Seoul for both days of last 9th and 10th.

J.Tune entertainment expressed their high expectations, "'Talk Asia' in documentary form is entirely to contain Rain's splendid performance on the stage as well as the tense atmosphere on back-stage."

Rain and 'Park Ji-Seong's programs will be aired on October 21st and 28th respectively.

10.19.09: Another NA Review @ VIFF

Ninja Assassin – B
Screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski
Directed by James McTeigue
Look at the poster for Ninja Assassin. It projects a certain quality – something along the lines of, this movie is intense and is going to own you. Honestly, that poster has to be one of the best posters I have seen this year. Sadly, it only tells half the story. James McTeigue’s follow-up to his adaptation of V for Vendetta is a fun, but ultimately uneven film.

The story should be simple – there are secret ninja clans that for a thousand years will provide assassinations in exchange for a hundred pounds of gold (or whatever that works out to in cash). The main clan in the story is Black Sand, and the star pupil, Raizo (Rain), has turned his back on the clan. Now the clan is out to get Raizo, and he in turn wants to take them down. Where things are not so simple, is that there is a parallel plot with Interpol, and a pretty forensics’ expert, Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris), has stumbled onto these clans, and her boss tells her to keep a low profile, and of course she does not, and…Does anybody really care? No, did not think so. What we really want to see is ninja against ninja – even if that means we have to suffer through a Raizo & Mika buddy-cop-faux-romance.
The action is why you are going to see Ninja Assassin. Nobody really cares about a story or plot that makes sense in these types of films (when they actually are plausible or interesting, then it is a bonus). McTeigue, being a pupil of the Wachowski Bros, knows how to deliver on the action. The ninja stuff is swift and merciless. The ninjas move in and out of shadows at will, often appearing like the smoke monster. It is pretty awesome.
Rain, one of pop’s biggest superstars in South Korea, has a great screen presence here. His command of English is not 100%, but it is a big improvement over his appearance in last year’s Speed Racer (which he was good in too). The physicality of the role suits him, and I would not be surprised to learn that he did most of the stunt work himself.
James McTeigue does have talent behind the camera, and one feels that perhaps the Interpol storyline was an afterthought here – in an effort to get North American audiences more interested. I would like to think that the script, credited to two men, Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, is more of an amalgamation than collaboration here. There are moments that are quite humourous, but overall, it falls short of being even good for the genre.
There are many beautiful set pieces where the ninjas are concerned. One fight between Raizo and a fellow student at one point amongst hundreds of hanging candles is breathtaking. Karl Walter Lindenlaub is the cinematographer here, and he has a good idea how to realize the director’s vision. There are a lot of scenes that are in the shadows and low or natural lighting, and they are crisp and clean – maybe a little too much at times.
All in all, this is a film that I recommend, if only for the action, and Rain’s performance. I will say this for the movie, it rarely lags. While it may not win any awards, at least it is an enjoyable couple of hours in the theatre.
Ninja Assassin screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival. It opens in North America on November 25, 2009

10.18.09 Another Ninja Assassin Review: Strong Asian characters with mainstream sex appeal at V

I’m all for undoing the martial arts Asian stereotype, but I have to admit that I left this film saying, “I think I want to be a ninja.” For Halloween anyway (and maybe Powell Street Festival too). In the classic style of director James McTeigue (Speed Racer, V for Vendetta) and Producers Andy and Larry Wachowski (who brought us The Matrix), Ninja Assassin’s opening sequence sets the tone for “you’re going to love this” if you get turned on by a combination of sophisticated martial arts and a level of gore that should really only be seen in manga-animation. The enthusiastic applause that followed the intro was reminiscent of the audience’s response to the opening sequence of The Matrix some ten years ago. For this reason I’m so happy I opted to skip the advance media screening and share this experience with a the general public.

There truly was a sense that the Wachowski brothers and James McTeigue were trying to take the martial arts genre up a notch. According to McTeigue,

“The Matrix changed the way people watched movies. Every now and again you get an epochal film that changes the way you view cinema and I’ve been lucky enough to be exposed to that … we’ve basically worked with the same people for 10 years now and you’re always trying to take it to the next level.” (vancouver.24hrs.ca)
From the film, it’s clear that the “next level” is being set by Asian cinema. Ninja Assassin is not that gory when compared to the Japanese film Blood: The Last Vampire, released in May 2009 (Japan) and possibly the most anticipated film of the summer in Asia. Keeping true to the manga-animated film of the same name, bodies are cut in half and blood spews in the same exaggerated convention of Japanese animation.
Although it was very cool when the demon-like ninjas moved through the shadows, taking on an almost supernatural nature, the special effects weren’t really ground-breaking. Neither was the script. I have to agree with Blaine Kyllo’s review on cinemaspy.com, the script was not as strong as it could have been.
What sets Ninja Assassin apart is the depiction of Asian men. Undeniably, there are some stereotypes—the gangsters and the martial arts—but the cool-factor of these characters is unmatched. The main character, Raizo, was played by Korean pop megastar Rain. Yes, there were some corny “Keannu Reeves moments,” but this wasn’t the monotone performance of Jet Li’s attempts to cross-over into English-language movies. Rain’s character was witty, charming and came with a lot of sex appeal in the form of abs, abs and more abs. Kind of Ryan Reynold’s like.
The cast of Ninja Assassin also included some of my most favorite Asian American actors, Sung Kang (who plays gangster boss, Hollywood), Rick Yune (who plays Raizo’s nemesis, Takeshi) and Sho Kosugi (Lord Ozunu), who was the original cinematic ninja of the 1980s (see Enter the Ninja and Revenge of the Ninja). And unexpectedly, the female lead is black. Mika Coretti, played by Naomie Harris. Her character lacked development, but depicted her as the average American girl who works as a forensic scientist.
And Vancouver was the perfect place for an early premier. McTeigue, in an interview in vancouver.24hrs.ca, commented, “I was keen to come up here because there is a large Asian population that would suit the film.” Perhaps what he meant was that Vancouver has a strong Asian sensibility that goes beyond the large Asian population. Evident in the equally large number of non-Asian ninja cinema enthusiasts.
All that to say, I can’t wait to watch it again. I can look past the script’s shortfalls for all the other great stuff that makes this “a bloody, blockbuster martial arts extravaganza.” If you can’t wait until November 25 for the North American theatrical release, you can join the mass line-up of those trying to catch the VIFF’s final screening of the film on:
Friday, October 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Empire Granville 7 Cinemas, 855 Granville Street.

Ninja Assassin review + Ninja Assassin in VIFF

Ninja Assassin review: Our thoughts on the pre-release screener viewing.

Submitted by Corey Rollins on Fri, 10/16/2009 - 13:32

Overall Feeling:
A much needed roundhouse kick of refreshment in the Ninja genre. Intense action, a good plot and some light humour make this a must see for any fan of hardcore action flicks. Especially if you like Ninjas.

The Pros:
Fantastic back story around how the Ninja's train their warriors. Excellent over the top visual FX help sell every action scene. As far as Ninja themed flicks go, there is a great mix of action, intense graphic violence and drama.

The Cons:
Some action scenes could have benefited from more wide shots. A few of the more dramatic dialogue exchanges were overly cheesy. A few lose ends that would have been nice to tie up or further explain that I won't reveal due to MAJOR spoilers. Not a huge deal though.
ShogunGamer.com Rating: 9

Let me start off by pointing out the logo for our website has a Ninja in it. We don't screw around when it comes to reviewing Ninja flicks and demand only the finest in stealthy bad ass action. Knowing this, you can imagine how high my expectations were for a movie titled "Ninja Assassin" that writes its logo in blood. A bold statement considering the lead actor is a Korean pop mega star.

To most North Americans whenever a pop idol steps onto the big screen and attempts to become a rough and tough action hero (e.g. Justin Timberlake as Green Lantern), the idea is not only ridiculous, it's just wrong. Very wrong. However, here's a Korean pop star who simple calls himself "Rain" who manages to be perfectly plausible as the baddest, bloodiest, most hard core Ninja assassin mother f*cker on the planet.

I seriously applaud his role in this film and the training he underweant to make it. Infact, the entire theatre I was in applauded him at least five times during the movies 99 minuet run time. And I'm not talking about a few easily amused fanboys shouting "wooh!" No no my good sir. I'm talking about the entire sold out theatre with viewers young and old, male and female roaring with applause, cheers and whistles. Let us discuss why.

Ninja Assassin follows an orphan boy (Rain), who was taken from the streets as a very young child by a thousand year old Ninja society known as the Ozunu Clan whose existence is considered a myth. He is bestowed with the name Raizo and transformed into a ruthless killer along with an army of other orphans from a variety of races. The movie frequently inter-cuts between scenes of Raizo's youth in the brutal orphanage/ninja factory and the modern day ninja war that is taking place. In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) stumbles upon a money trail linking several political murders to this ancient network of untraceable assassins. Unfortunately for her, this makes her a prime target for assassination. The Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune), to silence Mika forever. Raizo, for his own honourable reasons, betrays his clan and saves Mika from her attackers, but knows that the Clan will not rest until they are both eliminated.

Whenever you start mixing certain characters and plots with modern urban city settings you have to be very careful. Things can get cheesy fast. It may not be a Ninja movie, but Predator 2 is a prime example of this. Kinda like McDonalds food, it got the job done but you felt like a dirty rainbow for enjoying it because deep down you knew it was wrong.

Ninja Assassin on the other hand does a wonderful job of giving you hardcore no BS action that mixes characters from very two different worlds in a way that exudes awesome. There are few things more rewarding then watching a team of highly trained tactical SWAT officers armed with SMG's, rifles, shotguns and pistols get messed up and diced into pieces by Ninjas. The way they use shadows to conceal and reveal Ninjas in this film is simply brilliant. You honestly believe that people could be trained to become that stealthy.

The action in this film is not for the gore sensitive. Less then three minuets into the movie a Ninja cuts a Yakuza looking gangster's head clean off at the mouth, leaving his tongue flapping in his now exposed throat and the top of his head on the floor. Eyes rolling and everything. The crazy thing is, this death was actually one of the more merciful ones in that scene.

Ninja Assassin is jam packed full of over the top intense action that punishes the viewer for blinking. You do not want to miss a split second of this movie because in that time someone could be cut in half in a ridiculous display of acrobatics. Honestly, I couldn't tell you where the actual stunt work and wire work ends and the CGI begins in most places, because the choreography is just seamless, and breathtaking. Which makes sense, since it's produced by The Wachowski Brothers and directed by their protégé, James McTeigue.

Now, as good as the cinematography and fighting is there are a few scenes where I felt like they got a little lazy and used a lot of close up shaky footage (Michael Bay Transformers Style). Fortunately there are plenty of wide angled and slow motion ass whoopings in this movie. There's even a scene that resembles the multi-zooming-slow-motion-single-shot mayhem found in the movie 300...BUT WITH NINJAS.

One of the other things that really sells this movie is the emotional relationships it builds. You actually care who dies, who survives, who is betrayed and what happens to each characters. Sure, there's a few laughably cheesy dialogue exchanges between some of the characters, mainly between Raizo and his Ozunu Clan female ninja friend. But it's kind of believable that two people who were raised to do nothing but murder in sneaky ways from the age of four and now have feelings for each other might not have the best conversational skills.

If you're like me and have an affectionate soft spot for Ninja's this movie is a must watch in Theatres when it releases this November. Ninja Assassin is by far the best martial arts movie I've seen in a big theatre since The Matrix. I'm not saying the story is nearly as deep, but remember when you first saw bullet time? Imagine that scene involved Ninjas and was 99 minuets long. Go see this movie.

Ninja Assassin in VIFF

Just saw Ninja Assassin, got to meet the director

I just got back from the Vancouver International Film Festival. Ninja Assassin was obviously not an entry for it but it was there was as a bonus for the final film to be shown before the festival ends. I guess you can consider it as the the premiere of the film.

Anyways, James McTiegue was there to introduce the movie and he said he was lucky to get an R rating for his film from the MPAA and when you watch the movie, it shows.

When I first read about the movie, I thought this is going to be cool. Finally a real ninja movie because the last time I saw a ninja in a movie from a Hollywood production, it was called American Ninja.

So anyways, the plot is quite simple and been done before but it wasn't the plot that really keeps you drawn to the movie. It is literally the ninja kills.

And there are lots of "fatalities" in this movie. It is the bloodiest movie you have ever seen in an action movie. You've seen lots of gore in a hollywood horror film but this will be the first hollywood action movie you've seen lots of gore in. And it tops Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill and Inglorious Basterds.

The movie is very dark as it should be as ninjas are all about stealth and sneaking around in the dark. If you are looking for a well-lit, properly photographed martial arts movie, this is not for you. This movie is about ninjas and it is THE BEST hollywood produced ninja movie ever. The plot is simple enough for you to enjoy. The characters are perfect. Rain is awesome as Raizo, the lead character and his training really shows.

And let me tell you, James McTiegue made the movie that alot of us, when we were growing up in the 80s, wanted to make and that is a ninja movie. Remember during the 80s, we loved characters like Snake Eyes and Stormshadow. In fact, we wanted to be Ninjas, folding ninja stars out of paper in between classes and even in class.

So in this movie, it really shows almost every aspect there is about the ninja from sneaking around in the shadow, to the martial arts, to the various weapons and the philosophy of the ninja. It is all talked about. Maybe alot of you might also think that there will be thin characters and all that but Raizo's story is explored quite thoroughly which makes us actually care for his character.

There were lots of cheers, claps and laughs in the audience but the main thing that excited us the most were the ninja kills. Oh man, James McTiegue treated us to the most satisfying deaths since Lucy Liu got her brain chopped off in Kill Bill.

Anyways, November is not that far away, be sure to check it out.

MBLAQ appeared in SBS TV's 'Popular Song' (Ingi Gayo) on the 18th and sang their debut song 'Oh Yeah'.

On this day, the stage was overwhelmed by MBLAQ showing off their masculinity with wearing their suits that matched yellow with black.

MBLAQ have already been spotlighted since before their debut in that they are comprised of 'Lee-Joon' who acted a young boy character of the hero in hollywood movie Ninja Assassin starring Rain, 'Cheondoong' who is girl group '2NE1's 'Sandara Park' whose younger brother, 'Mirr' who is actress 'Ko Eun-Ah's younger brother, et cetera.

[Oct-17-2009] Rain speaks with MBC's 'Section Ent News' aired on October 16th, in the Soho Area of New York.

 <Update>+ <Correction>

-New York, the city of fashion and culture-

-A major department store in New York-

Reporter : What's the purpose of your visit here?
Rain : I've been invited to a world-famous brand event with the promotion of Ninja Assassin.

Reporter : What's Rain's chance of succeeding in America? (to the hostess of the event)
The hostess
: I think now the Asian era has been before us, Asian stars ought
to lead the world, and I'm sure Rain from Korea is the ultimate super
star, in addition to,
Rain's decided to become my nephew.

Reporter : How do you enjoy it when you usually come to a party?
Rain : I can enjoy it more freely without camera.

Reporter : What'll you do if there is not any camera?
Rain : (Springing up from his seat immediately, he is turing around)

Reporter What do you think of Rain's charm?
Woman A : He is so handsome!
Woman B: I love Rain!

-New York's Times Square humming with activity-

Rain : During this trip, New York is the place for me.

-Road signs plumming big musicals of Broadway theaters-

Reporter  : How many times have you visited New York?
Rain : It's my 6th visit.

-These two are on the move in Rain's car somewhere else-

Reporter : Do you think New York food is to your appetite?
Rain : No matter what it may be, I must eat anyhow.

Reporter : I wonder how you lived through the rough times during your diet for the Ninja Assassin shooting.
Rain
: I was only thinking the day when my movie Ninja Assassin's billboard
is set up in Broadway, and the way I could withstand all the hardship.

Rain : I think every woman cannot help but like my naked body.
Wearing only two suits,
I had an almost-nude scene and nearly kept to go naked in the movie, so
I think you can see my mature appearance, seeing my most basically
instinctive body.

Reporter  : Maybe every woman will have a fight with her boy friend after seeing your naked and appeal body in the movie.
Rain
: Of course, they should fight with each other, I don't care what other
people fight or what happens, and what's their fighting or not got to
do with my work?
But I may have to an apology by bowing many times if I do like that.

-New York's Soho neighborhood which is arrested as a fashiony street-

Reporter : I think I'm more leisurely free since I stay overseas.
Rain : So I seem to love Soho here and to be able to feel New York's culture.

-The shop Rain patronizes-

Rain : This shop sells merchandise such as bath lotions or conditioners, and so on.
So Yeah, I look like a shop keeper.

Rain : (Rain is washing his hands, sort of, with some scented water in the shop)
To be permitted to return to my country and to avoid 'the Flu', I have to wash my hands.

Rain : (looking in the glass) Oh, my face has become clean! I was only trying to lay my hand on the face!

-Rain is a frequent visitor even at the coffee shop of his second stop-

Rain : How about a cup of coffee?
Reporter : Please!

Reporter : If you film a very romantic commercial in New York?
Rain : (He pretends to pose for the commercial, but all of sudden)
Oops! it's very hot! (setting the cup to his lips)

- A park in the heart of the city-

Reporter : There seems to be no one laying a blanket on the bench and sitting on it besides ourselves.
Rain : Also, it's the first time only two men have gone for on outing to a park.

Rain : (pretending to hold MC's shoulder) By doing this, we must be shunned by the people around.

-Rain in New York in 2009-

Reporter : Are you happy now?
Rain : It's just thrilling not to forget aboaut the basics, such as when I first met JYP, opening the first door.

Reporter : Finally, please say a few words of greeting to MBC Family.
Rain : In conclusion, there is one more thing I'll tell you.
Are you able to see that police car that says "NYPD" over there?

Reporter : Of course.
Rain : Who do you think is more scaring to people between NY police and LA police?

Reporter: The LA side seems to be scary.
Rain : Both are scary. (soon after) Hope you to love Ninja Assassin very much and to look forward to it.
Thank you.

-Rain, see you next time! -

[10-17] Ninja Assassin review: Our thoughts on the pre-release screener viewing

Ninja Assassin review: Our thoughts on the pre-release screener viewing
Submitted by Corey Rollins on Fri, 10/16/2009 – 13:32

Overall Feeling:
A much needed roundhouse kick of refreshment in the Ninja genre. Intense action, a good plot and some light humour make this a must see for any fan of hardcore action flicks. Especially if you like Ninjas.
The Pros:
Fantastic back story around how the Ninja’s train their warriors.
A few lose ends that would have been nice to tie up or further explain that I won’t reveal due to MAJOR spoilers. Not a huge deal though.
ShogunGamer.com Rating :
9

Let me start off by pointing out the logo for our website has a Ninja in it.  We don’t screw around when it comes to reviewing Ninja flicks and demand only the finest in stealthy bad ass action. Knowing this, you can imagine how high my expectations were for a movie titled “Ninja Assassin” that writes its logo in blood. A bold statement considering the lead actor is a Korean pop mega star.
To most North Americans whenever a pop idol steps onto the big screen and attempts to become a rough and tough action hero (e.g. Justin Timberlake as Green Lantern), the idea is not only ridiculous, it’s just wrong. Very wrong. However, here’s a Korean pop star who simple calls himself “Rain” who manages to be perfectly plausible as the baddest, bloodiest, most hard core Ninja assassin mother f*cker on the planet.
I seriously applaud his role in this film and the training he underweant to make it. Infact, the entire theatre I was in applauded him at least five times during the movies 99 minuet run time. And I’m not talking about a few easily amused fanboys shouting “wooh!” No no my good sir. I’m talking about the entire sold out theatre with viewers young and old, male and female roaring with applause, cheers and whistles.
The movie frequently inter-cuts between scenes of Raizo’s youth in the brutal orphanage/ninja factory and the modern day ninja war that is taking place.
Kinda like McDonalds food, it got the job done but you felt like a dirty whore for enjoying it because deep down you knew it was wrong.
Ninja Assassin on the other hand does a wonderful job of giving you hardcore no BS action that mixes characters from very two different worlds in a way that exudes awesome. There are few things more rewarding then watching a team of highly trained tactical SWAT officers armed with SMG’s, rifles, shotguns and pistols get messed up and diced into pieces by Ninjas. The way they use shadows to conceal and reveal Ninjas in this film is simply brilliant. You honestly believe that people could be trained to become that stealthy.
The action in this film is not for the gore sensitive. Less then three minuets into the movie a Ninja cuts a Yakuza looking gangster’s head clean off at the mouth, leaving his tongue flapping in his now exposed throat and the top of his head on the floor.
Honestly, I couldn’t tell you where the actual stunt work and wire work ends and the CGI begins in most places, because the choreography is just seamless, and breathtaking. Which makes sense, since it’s produced by The Wachowski Brothers and directed by their protégé, James McTeigue.
Now, as good as the cinematography and fighting is there are a few scenes where I felt like they got a little lazy and used a lot of close up shaky footage (Michael Bay Transformers Style). Fortunately there are plenty of wide angled and slow motion ass whoopings in this movie. There’s even a scene that resembles the multi-zooming-slow-motion-single-shot mayhem found in the movie 300…BUT WITH NINJAS.
One of the other things that really sells this movie is the emotional relationships it builds. You actually care who dies, who survives, who is betrayed and what happens to each characters. Sure, there’s a few laughably cheesy dialogue exchanges between some of the characters, mainly between Raizo and his Ozunu Clan female ninja friend. But it’s kind of believable that two people who were raised to do nothing but murder in sneaky ways from the age of four and now have feelings for each other might not have the best conversational skills.
If you’re like me and have an affectionate soft spot for Ninja’s this movie is a must watch in Theatres when it releases this November. Ninja Assassin is by far the best martial arts movie I’ve seen in a big theatre since The Matrix. I’m not saying the story is nearly as deep, but remember when you first saw bullet time? Imagine that scene involved Ninjas and was 99 minuets long. Go see this movie.

[Oct-16-2009] MBLAQ produced by Rain receives a tremendous reaction after their first debut, and their agency says, "They can do better next time"

MBLAQ who has been spotlighted as the new face of Rain, is receiving a tremendous reaction after their first debut at Mnet 'M! Countdown' on the 15th.

Their enthusiastic stage manner was an object of fascination due to their getting through with the strenuous performance and unveiling the six-pack by one of them, singing their title song 'Oh Yeah'.

Netizens gave vent to their favorite comments, "They are so energetic." "They take after Rain in that they all are very sexy due to their own great figures, in spite of an idol group."

However, MBLAQ's agency J.Tune entertainment seems to feel something wanting.
An official from the agency expressed, "MBLAQ seemed to perform at full strain, perhaps from their first appearance on TV, that makes us inconvenient, but they can professionally do better next time if they make themselves change to camera."

Also, if you leave any comments on your impression of MBLAQ, you can contact with UFOTOWN.com http://circle.ufotown.com/mblaq and can leave your words.

Meanwhile, it is expected that MBLAQ will intensely compete with idol groups such as SS501, Shiny, Beast, and so on, for the number one position in the future.
