Korean ‘K-Pop’ Star to Rain Down Concert on Phnom Penh
by Phan Soumy | March 10, 2017
Following hot on the heels of mega-shows involving pop stars Demi Lovato and Jessie J on Phnom Penh’s Koh Pich island in 2015, this year will see a K-Pop star taking the stage in the form of Rain.
The event, which will be held on March 30, was announced at a press conference in Phnom Penh yesterday by Thomas Hundt, CEO of Smart, the mobile operator putting on the show.

Rain, 34, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, was chosen to diversify the lineup after two Western female pop stars were chosen for the past two events, Mr. Hundt said.
“We brought two ladies to town in 2015, so we thought it is time for a guy,” he told reporters at the company’s headquarters yesterday.
“The venue is quite big. It is the same venue we had Demi Lovato and Jessie J on, so we can accommodate 35,000 to 37,000 people,” he said.
Despite previous predictions of attendances around the 35,000 mark, Demi Lovato’s 2015 show brought in about a third of that amount.
Mr. Hundt declined to give details of the total budget for the event—which will be free to Smart subscribers—when asked by a reporter.
“You can imagine it is a significant amount, you have to spend for the artists, the stage and everything around,” he said.
It was not clear if the concert will also be open to non-Smart subscribers, as the previous two were.
Rain, 34, a singer-songwriter, actor, music producer and one of the biggest male stars in his homeland, began to make waves in Cambodia in the mid-2000s following the release of the South Korean romantic-comedy television series “Full House,” which he starred in and proved to be a big hit across the country.
While most eyes will be on the K-Pop star, whose most well-known tunes include “It’s Raining” and “I’m Coming,” there will be a selection of homegrown artists in support, including pop duo Kmeng Khmer.
“I hope that all the artists who are original artists in Cambodia will try to perform well to show the world that we also have talented people in our country,” said Chea Socheat, 21, a member of Kmeng Khmer.
