K-pop superstar Rain will make his Hollywood debut in ``Speed Racer,” the much anticipated live action adaptation of the iconic Japanese animated car racing series.
Yonhap News reported Rain, 25, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, will play the role of a rookie car racer in ``Speed Racer,” which will be written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski. The Wachowski brothers are the creative team behind the sci-fi blockbuster ``Matrix” movie series.
Yonhap News quoted Rain’s manager as saying the K-pop singer will be attending the ``Speed Racer” press conference on May 31 in Berlin, Germany. Hollywood actors Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon and Christina Ricci will attend the press conference. Shooting for ``Speed Racer” will start in June in Berlin, and the film’s release date is May 2008.
After his world concert tour ends in June, Rain will head to Berlin to start filming his scenes. He is expected to stay in Berlin for two months.
His manager said Rain met with the Wachowski brothers last April in Berlin, where they discussed the film. Rain was reportedly impressed with the film’s story, and the directors’ originality and creativity.
``Speed Racer” will be Rain’s first international movie, and only his second movie. He made his film debut in director Park Chan-wook’s film ``I’m a Cyborg, but That’s Okay” last year. The film had a disappointing run in South Korea, but Rain’s acting received favorable reviews.
Rain gained popularity throughout Asia for his role in Korean dramas such as ``Full House,” as well as his chart-topping R&B and dance songs. He is reportedly planning to release an English-language album in the United States this year.
Rain also recently topped an online poll of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the world. The singer is currently on his world concert tour, which has taken him to the United States, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and Australia.
Speed Racer is based on a Japanese comic created by Tatsuo Yoshida. Hirsch, who starred in ``The Girl Next Door” and ``The Emperor’s Club,” will play the title role of Speed. Goodman and Sarandon will play Speed's parents, while Christina Ricci will play his girlfriend Trixie. Matthew Fox, who stars in the TV show ``Lost,” will play the Speed Racer’s rival named Racer X.
In recent months, there have been several Korean actors who have been cast in Hollywood films. Jeon Ji-hyun, who adapted the name to Gianna Jun for her Hollywood roles, has been cast in ``Blood: The Last Vampire.” Jang Dong-gun will co-star with Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi in the Hollywood film ``Laundry Warrior.”
Actor Park Jung-hoon had previously appeared with Mark Wahlberg in the thriller ``The Truth About Charlie” in 2002.
