[26-Jun-10][MTV]Happy Birthday, Rain!

There will probably be an awful lot of celebrating in South Korea today. Not only did their national soccer team qualify for the next round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup (they'll take on Uruguay this Saturday, June 26), but today is also the birthday of one of their most incredible international exports. Rain, the multi-talented singer, model, actor and business mogul from Seoul, turns 28 years old today.

Born Jung Ji-Hoon, Rain began his career as a back-up dancer who eventually worked his way into the spotlight with his debut album Bad Guy in 2002. Around the same time, he scored an acting job on the popular television drama "Sang Doo! Let's Go to School." More albums followed (six in Korean, one in Japanese), but it was his acting work that helped him make the transition into international stardom.

In 2008, he appeared as a villain in the summer blockbuster "Speed Racer," and by 2009 he scored big with a starring role in the international martial arts hit "Ninja Assassin." Rain has also been quite a friend to MTV. Not only did his work in "Ninja Assassin" earn him the prize for Biggest Badass Star at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, but he was also a key player in the MTV EXIT campaign, which worked towards ending human trafficking in Asia.
Rain is currently enjoying his latest international hit "Hip Song," which is from his just-released new album Back to the Basic. (He is also leading his team to victories in the MTV World Cup of Rock!) But his signature voice and incredible talent as a dancer has best been on display in the video for "How to Avoid the Sun."

Back to the Basic message from Rain video
Encore: Instead of Saying Goodbye, dance

Zepp hall was not very big, with a simple 2 level stage. There were some seats on the second level, but most of us were standing crowded against each other on the floor. A whole floor of sardines.

When the curtain rose, and the music for Rainism started, two dancers jumped up high on the high stage on both sides.  Then our prince jumped up even higher in the centre.  Grey suit with brown collars and sleeves, with black V neck tee underneath.  The trousers were to his knees with brown leather straps around the waist and the legs. Black boots.  Shiny and silky hair.  Had you ever felt struck by someone so beautiful suddenly appearing in front of you?  That’s exactly what I felt the moment our prince stood on the stage and performed Rainism, followed by It’s Raining.

He was already sweating profusely after the 2 songs, so he took a towel to dry a bit, and asked us if he was handsome.  He was super handsome and he knew it!

He then performed 4 slow ballads – Shake Hands, How to Avoid the Sun, September 12 and You Know.  Wonderful vocal.  Even without the Otter wave dance, our prince caught and captured the whole floor of sardines with his magical voice alone!

The lights dimmed, the curtain dropped.  We saw his enlarged silhouette.  Our prince probably told us he needed to change (he spoke in Korean, so I had to guess).  And he took off his tee right in front of us.  Even though it was just his silhouette, it made the floor scream. He pulled down his pants a bit, tried to unbuckle his belt.  When we roared he said something and quickly walked backstage to change.

When our prince came out with the music of Sad Tango, I was totally dazed by his gorgeous look.  He wore a black sleeveless jacket and black trousers, with a black semi-beanie.  He was unbelievably handsome and the outfit, the dance moves and the song matched so well. After Touch Ya was the highlight of the evening.  Our prince took out a video camera, took a few clips of himself (grinning and admiring his own looks at the screen), then zoomed around the floor. I raised my light board.  He saw it, and said “Ar, Hong Kong”!!

What I was going to describe had no intention of any disrespect.  In fact it was the contrary – because she was indeed extremely cute and that’s why our prince chose her!  Our prince’s camera stopped at a chubby lady who wore a pair of sparkling red puppy ears on her hair.  She’s “nodding” her head and her hands happily, half closing her eyes.  She’s like a happy puppy seeing its owner, so happy that she couldn’t help nodding and nodding.  The owner, our prince, clearly found this amusing, so after he zoomed around other areas he got back to her again. She’s still nodding happily with her head and her hands.  Our prince zoomed around again, and got back to her, and she’s doing exactly the same thing.  So our prince invited her to go up to the stage!!!!!

And the dating began.  Our prince held her hands and took her up the stairs to the high stage.  On there was a round table with 2 chairs.  A bouquet of flowers and a big teddy soft toy were on the table.  The gentle prince showed his lady to her seat, put his arm across her shoulder, with his other hand holding the camera, and started to sing My Girl. He knelt down on his knees to present her with the flowers, gave her the toy.  He looked at her when he sang the words “you are my girl”.  He arched his hand on his head and asked the lady to arch hers too to make a love sign.  When the song was over, he gave her a big hug, took out the video clip and gave it to her.

That was the first night.

The second night he said he would choose a younger girl.  (We knew our prince had a wide range for age right?!)  The lucky girl this time was a 21 year old student.  She had to be “dug out” from the floor of sardines by the security manager who literally carried her over the fence to get to the stage.  She had a small bouquet of flowers with her as our prince held her hand and took her up the stage.  So our prince dated his second girl again.

At the end of the date, the girl gave our prince the flowers and told him it was from her friend on the floor (my guess).  Our prince waved to that lady with the flowers and sent his date down the stage.

When he was ready to sing his next song Love Is, he casually threw the flower on the floor.  This was such a natural movement, like he always took off his hat, or his jacket and threw them on the floor.  Except this time it was the flowers.  He realized immediately what he had done, even if we hadn’t laughed at his action.  He gave an embarrassing smile and said (my guess again) “I’m going to look after it afterwards”
More laughs.  He gave his cute smile again and picked up the flowers and stuck it in his chest under his sleeveless tee.  After he did so he gave a question mark OK signal to the fan and paid great attention to the flowers as he sang the song.  Remember our prince said in one variety show that he had many ideas to spoil his girl friend?  Who wouldn’t be spoiled by what he did?!

There were many other prince charms.  Fans holding out bottles of water.  He took one, had a sip, and returned it back to the fan.  He’s sweating.  Someone held out a towel.  He took it, wiped his face, and gave it back to the fan.

He liked to tease with us too.  He said something.  The floor responded.  He gave a pretended scornful twitch with his mouth. We laughed.  He pretended to be scornful, then he broke out into the sweetest, cutest smile.

Our prince then sang In my Bed before he went back stage again to change his clothes.

As soon as the music for Hip Song started the floor of sardines suddenly all became live otters and created a sea wave on the floor.  If you didn’t follow the flow, you would simply be pushed to nowhere land.  We had to move along with the flow during the whole concert, but Hip Song created a small tsunami. Our prince wore a Mazinger Z tee.  Knowing the super power he had over us, he put a hand V over his chin, admiring himself and letting us admire him, then pointed to the Mazinger picture on his tee and gave us a nod that he was Mazinger himself.  Couldn’t remember when,  he even held up his arm, showed his strong muscle to boast his strength.  Couldn’t blame him for showing off, he was indeed in his top form!

I believed the talk part was after With You and Fresh Woman (I could be wrong).  In the first night he said he’s happy that we would celebrate his birthday together in Fukuoka.  He probably even asked if we had prepared birthday gifts for him!  My guess was as good as the translator, who had proved himself very incapable the second night.  Our prince said something.  The translator said a few words and stopped.  Our prince turned his head toward the translator and gave a puzzled look.  He probably thought the translator did not catch his words so he repeated again.  The translator stopped again at the exact spot.  Our prince waited and gave an even more puzzled, a “this is unbelievable” look.   He then gave a helpless, apologetic smile and said to us in Korean: “That’s OK right?” Yes, prince, the translator was a cyborg, but that’s OK.

I learned from my Japanese friend later what our prince said.  Indeed the first night was about celebrating his birthday in Fukuoka (it seemed we could expect to have some kind of birthday party).  The second night however he talked about the World Cup.  He told us that he was happy South Korea made to the final 16.  Now he would cheer for Japan.  (I believed Japan would play its critical game on 25 June? The following was my guess again. It could be totally wrong so please bear with me.)  He asked who would have to stay home to watch the game instead of going to Fukuoka to watch him, and he said jokingly “I hate it”.  He asked another question and asked us to put up our hands. (Again I guessed his asked how many of us will follow him to Fukuoka.)  Then he asked us to put up our hands again for a better count, and said something about 70%.  He seemed impressed. Dear prince, please deduct one hand from whatever answer you are seeking, because I just followed the flow and put up my hand too without knowing the question!  Such was the accuracy of statistics!

The background screen changed to a highway when our prince sang Free Way and asked us “Come on and ride with me”.

After Free Way it was You.  If I remembered correctly, our prince had never sung You in a  live concert – except the 625 fashion show concert.  At that time he was leading the models, so there weren’t many dance movements.  This time, he’s surrounded by sexy lady dancers and performed some sexy dancing of course.  Then he walked up to the high stage, sat on the chair in the middle, and enjoyed being spoiled by his admirers before he disappeared to change.  He had severe prince syndrome!

During his change time the big screen showed the Love Song MV.  There were some shots I had not seen before – I wondered if it was in the DVD that goes with the Japanese version of the Back to the Basic album.  In the first night his Love Song outfit was black and gold, in the second night it was white and diamond.

And we knew it was coming to an end when he sang To You.  He thanked us and disappeared.

We cheered for his name and encore.  After a while the words “Back to the Basic” appeared on the big screen, followed with a video clip, showing the various periods of our prince.  Our prince read out his message in Japanese.  Reading from the Chinese characters amongst the Japanese subtitles on the screen, I could see that our prince was thanking his fans for their love and support over the years, and said that he would continue to work hard.  His melodious, sincere voice touched the hearts of everyone.  The ending shot of the video was our prince performing his first album song, Instead of Saying Good Bye, the fresh, young boy in his first year of debut.  Red balloons dropped from the ceiling. It was chaos when everyone tried to snatch one.

And the screen rose and the music of Instead of Saying Good Bye started.  Our prince, after 8 years, performed the song once again.  It was very touching to see his good friend, Baegka, appeared on stage side by side with him in the second night.  They performed the song together.  Baegka wore a beanie, with a thick hoodie over a tee.  Our prince on the other hand, just wore a white Love Tour short sleeve tee.

After the song it was the dance part.  Our prince was in excellent mood.  He cheered for all the dancers to give a solo performance.  We could see him smile so happily as he watched them.  He then walked towards Baegka and spoke something in his ear. Baegka nodded and then the two of them got to the centre of the stage and performed a duet dance. The friendship, the love, the support could be felt and seen in their beautiful, powerful dance.

Our prince gave a solo after this.  I could feel his happiness, and I wanted such happiness to be with him forever.  Even though he had to bow and say goodbye to us finally, even though I smelled like a days old dead fish afterwards, we both had a most wonderful time together.

It was raining the second day of the concert.  It was raining in Fukuoka as I typed out this fan account.

Thank you dear prince, for a wonderful date.
