Rain's new biopic "Uhm Bok-dong" is almost done

5 Jun – South Korean superstar Rain will soon be starring in an upcoming South Korean biographical drama film based on the famed cyclist Uhm Bok-dong, and the shooting of the film is almost halfway done.
"I'm shooting a new movie called "Uhm Bok-dong". Obviously, it's based on the life of the Korean cyclist of the same name during the Japanese colonial period of 1910 in Korea," said the actor during our interview with him at the recent Viral Fest Asia in Bangkok.
"The shooting of the film is about 40 percent done, and it would most likely go on until mid-August," the actor added.
Uhm Bok-dong became a national symbol of pride for the Koreans when he defeated Japanese cyclists and won the championship in a bicycle race which took place during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea.

Rain mentioned that this is the first time that he has taken on this kind of role, and he hopes that he gets to try on more challenging roles in the future.
"The role that I'm playing now is a character that I've never tried playing before and it is very challenging and interesting, so I'm sure that it will be a new experience to the audience as well."
"I really enjoy working with the other actors on the film, and I hope that in the future I get to try on other different kinds of new and unique characters," the 34-year-old singer-cum-actor said.
After filming is done, Rain will be focusing on releasing his new album which is set to be released by the end of this year.
"If I'll be staring in a new drama, the album is expected to come out in December, if not, it could be around mid-November," said Rain whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon.
Meanwhile, the King of Pop also noted that he is embarrassed to be called King of Pop by his fans even though he feels honoured at the same time.
"Apart from me, there are a lot of other well-known artistes in the entertainment industry. I'm just a shy person who tries to act and sing in my own style, and with own ability. I'm just helping the others to help promote K-Pop to the rest of the world."

[엑's 인터뷰②] '엄복동' 이범수 "'신혼' 정지훈♥김태희, 통화 자주해"
[엑스포츠뉴스 전아람 기자] 배우 이범수는 요즘 처음으로 제작에 나선 영화 '자전차왕 엄복동' 촬영으로 바쁜 나날을 보내고 있다.
'자전차왕 엄복동'은 일제강점기에 일본이 조선을 지배하기 위해 시행한 자전거 경주에서 일본 선수들을 제치고 우승을 거머쥔 자전거 영웅 엄복동의 실화를 바탕으로 한 작품이다. 타이틀롤 '엄복동' 역할은 최근 김태희와 결혼한 정지훈(비)이 맡는다.
이범수는 최근 진행된 엑스포츠뉴스와의 인터뷰에서 정지훈에 대해 "이번 작품을 통해 '정지훈'이라는 배우에 대한 새로움을 발견했다. 이번 영화의 흥망을 떠나서 배우 정지훈의 탄생은 볼만할 것이라는 생각을 감히 한다. 어느 때보다도 진솔하게, 열정적으로 임하고 있다"고 말하며 그의 연기 열정을 극찬했다.
이어 "무엇보다 기분 좋은 것은 내가 정지훈에게 '옛날에는 네가 셀럽 같은 느낌이었는데 요즘은 모니터 통해 보니 아우라가 있는 남자 배우 같다'고 말했다. 열연하는 모습 보면서 기분이 좋아서 한마디 했다. 본인도 깜짝 놀랐을 것이다. 그만큼 정지훈이라는 발견이 정말 보람된다"고 덧붙였다.
정지훈은 지난 1월 19일 5년 간의 열애 끝에 김태희와 백년가약을 맺었다. 또 김태희는 현재 임신 중이다. 이범수는 촬영 중에도 틈틈이 아내 김태희에게 전화하는 정지훈의 모습에 대해 살짝 귀띔하기도. "한창 신혼이라 둘이 자주 통화하더라."
이범수에게 '제작자로 보니 어떤 배우가 기특한가' 질문했다. 그의 답변은 진지했다. "배우할 때도 그런 생각을 했지만 제작 하면서 역시 그런 생각이 더 진해졌다. 고민하는 배우, 맡은 배역에 대해 고민하는 배우가 기특하다. 현장에서든 집에서든 고민한 흔적이 다음 회차 때 모니터를 통해 비춰지니까 고맙게 느껴졌다. 현장이 정말 재미있고, 가족 같은 것이 배역에 알맞은 캐릭터를 섭외했는데 공교롭게 이미 친한 사이다. 강소라, 김희원, 민효린 등 이미 다 친하다. 정지훈, 이시언, 고창석도 이미 친하더라. 어느 한 명 들쑥날쑥 거리는 것 없이 팀워크가 어느 작품보다도 잘 맞는다. 복이라고 생각한다. 그래서 다행이라고 생각한다. 더 작품에 몰입할 수 있다."
연기가 좋아 직접 영화 제작까지 맡게 된 이범수는 연기를 오래도록 하고 싶은 소망을 드러냈다. "지금도 영화가 예술인가에 대해 생각한다. 6개월~1년 전부터 돌아보니 나와 함께 시작하고 경쟁한 배우들이 요즘 잘 안 보이더라. 그러다보니 나도 언제든 활동이 뜸해질 수도 있을 것이라 생각한다. 많은 배우들이 예술성, 실력, 연기력이 상실 돼서 뜸해진 건가 100번, 1000번 스스로 생각했다. 그렇지 않다. 안 찾는다. 팬들이든 자본이든 안 찾는다. 그들이 안 찾으면 각자 훌륭한 예술혼은 어디서 보여주겠나 라는 생각을 한다. 그만큼 현실이라는 것에 대한 방점을 찍게 되더라. 내가 좋아하는 예술로서의 영화, 내가 좋아하는 배우의 길을 어떻게 해야 다같이 오래오래 할 수 있는가 생각한다. 함께 치열하게 경쟁했던 배우들과 꼭 다시 작품을 해보고 싶다. 다들 멋진 배우들이다."

이범수 "정지훈, '엑스맨' 포기하고 '엄복동' 집중"(인터뷰②)

[조이뉴스24 권혜림기자] 배우 이범수가 영화 '자전차왕 엄복동'을 통해 호흡을 나누고 있는 정지훈(비)을 극찬했다. 자신이 배우이자 제작자로 나선 이번 영화에 정지훈을 캐스팅한 소감을 알리며 "배우 정지훈의 탄생을 보게 될 것"이라고 자신했다.
지난 1일 서울 잠원동 셀트리온엔터테인먼트 사옥에서 영화·매니지먼트 대표이자 배우인 이범수의 인터뷰가 진행됐다.
제작자 겸 배우로서 '자전차왕 엄복동'(감독 김유성, 제작 셀트리온엔터테인먼트) 작업에 한창인 이범수는 정지훈과의 호흡을 알리며 "이번 작품을 통해 정지훈이란 배우의 새로움을 발견하고 있다"고 알렸다. 극 중 정지훈은 타이틀롤인 엄복동 역을 맡아 극을 이끈다.
"영화의 흥망을 떠나서 배우 정지훈의 탄생은 볼 만할 것이라는 생각을 감히 합니다. 어느 때보다 진솔하게 열정적으로 임하고 있어요. 정지훈에게 얼마 전 이야기를 했죠. '예전에는 네가 '셀럽' 같은 느낌이었는데 요즘은 모니터를 통해 보니 네가 아우라 있는 남자 배우 같다'고요. 너무 기분이 좋아서 그렇게 한 마디 했어요. 아마 본인도 깜짝 놀랐을 것이라 생각해요. 그만큼 정지훈이라는 배우에 대한 발견이 너무 보람된 일이었어요."
정지훈을 주인공에 캐스팅한 과정을 돌이키며, 이범수는 할리우드 대작에 캐스팅됐던 정지훈이 이를 뒤로 하고 '자전차왕 엄복동' 촬영에 매진했었다는 사실도 공개했다.
"정지훈이 '엑스맨'이었던가, 할리우드 영화에 캐스팅됐었어요. 7월 촬영을 하자고 했다는데, '엄복동' 촬영이 8월 말까지였거든요. 좋게 말하면 융통성 있게 해보려 했는데 일정이 제대로 겹쳐 도저히 못 하는 상황이 됐어요. 그런데 정지훈은 좌고우면하지 않더라고요. 아주 심플했어요. (충청도 사투리로) '기면 기고 아니면 아니다' 랄까요?(웃음) '더 좋은 거 들어오겠죠' 하고 둘이서 회를 먹으러 갔던 기억이 나요."
여주인공 김형신 역을 연기할 강소라의 연기도 호평했다. 이범수는 "강소라가 이 작품에서 액션부터 멜로까지 모든 것을 소화한다"며 "TV에서 보던 것보다 더 성숙된 면을 발견하게 되는 것 같다"고 말했다.
'자전차왕 엄복동'의 제작 경험은 데뷔 30주년을 앞둔 그에게 배우라는 직업을 멀찍이 돌아볼 수 있는 일이기도 했다. 제작자로서 '좋은 배우'의 덕목을 다시 고민하게 됐다는 그는 "(좋은 배우는) 고민하는 배우인 것 같다"는 답을 내놨다.
"제작 일을 하며 그 고민이 진해지고 있어요. 맡은 배역에 대해 고민하는 배우가 좋은 배우인 것 같아요. 현장에서든 집에서든 그 고민의 흔적이 모니터를 통해 비춰지니 너무 고맙게 느껴지죠. 현장이 너무 재밌고 가족 같아요. 각 배역에 알맞은 캐릭터를 섭외했는데 이미 공교롭게 그들끼리 친하더라고요. 강소라, 김희원, 민효린, 정지훈, 이시언 등 모두 친한 사이예요. 어느 한명 들쑥날쑥하는 것 없이 팀워크가 어느 작품보다 잘 맞아 복이라 생각해요. 사실 그런 게 제일 걱정이었거든요. 다행이라고 생각하며 작품에 몰입하고 있어요."
이범수는 이날 인터뷰를 통해 과거 활발히 활동하다 최근 몇 년 간 충무로 활약이 뜸한 또래 배우들에 대해 언급하기도 했다. 여전히 좋은 덕목을 가진 배우들이지만 어느 순간 전만큼 작품에서 자주 만날 수 없게 된 그들을 향한 안타까움이었다. 제작 경험을 통해 과거의 동료들과 다시 치열한 작업을 하고 싶다는 이야기도 덧붙였다.
"영화 제작을 하면서 느낀 건, '영화가 정말 예술인가'라는 거예요. 예술이지만 동시에 산업적 측면으로 많이 가 있잖아요. 어느덧 그런 생각이 들어요. 1년 전, 6개월 전부터 뒤를 돌아보니 과거 함께 시작하고 경쟁했던 배우들이 요즘 잘 보이지 않는 거예요. 갑자기 그들의 예술성이, 실력이 떨어져 플레이가 뜸해지는 건 아니거든요. 그 문제에 대해 백 번 천 번 스스로 생각해봤어요. 자본이든, 팬들이든, 그들을 찾지 않기 때문인 것 같더라고요. '그렇다면 이들의 훌륭한 예술혼을 어디서 보여줄 것인가' 싶었어요. 거창한 이야긴 아니고, 그만큼 현실적 고민에 방점을 찍게 됐어요."
상업적 필요와 별개로, 뛰어난 실력의 배우들과 보다 오래 함께 걸어가고 싶다는 희망을 전한 그는 "어떻게 해야 다 같이 오래 오래 할 수 있는지에 대한 진지한 고민을 1~2년 전부터 하고 있다"며 "그러다 기회가 닿아 영화를 제작하게 됐으니 더 어깨가 무겁다"고 말했다.
이어 "그런 치열한 배우들과 꼭 다시 작품을 하고 싶다"며 "다들 멋진 배우들이었고 지금도 그렇기 때문"이라고 덧붙였다.
